When I'm writing long stories, I'll often have a general outline covering major events, and then divide those major stories into different "books." Then I'll go into each book, and work on the connective tissue and character developments between each major event. Then I'll start writing specific chapters. If I had to guess, this is more or less where they're at. They know the next 3 expansions are (for example) Meracydia, #shard, big Source event. But the individual stories, B plot, etc, likely aren't set in stone yet, and they'll probably make adjustments to those based on player response. Such as how much we see characters like Wuk, Erenville, or Zero, vs the scions, vs new characters.

Yeah, with this you can’t end up in a d2 Lightfall situation where due to a mandate of 1 expansion per year, the devs were forced cobble together and shove an entire year of content between two halves of a cutscene. LUCKY!

Casual feedback should be listened too, arguably one of the things the game lacks more in terms of content to do during big patches is casual content that you can join for like an hour and get some progress, as the normal tier of raid is more than completed and casuals dont do savage nor max their crafters they care about the game but sometimes diferent things . Still there is things that casual and hardcore players agree, at least in the discords i am, while we can disagree in things like dificulty or complexity i have seen everyone agree on things like the island being a disapoitment, jobs in the same rol feel too similar at times, some jobs just feel weird or boring right now, or that with the longer patches or the seasonal events being mediocre at best for a paid mmo.

Casual feedback is almost an oxymoron is the biggest issue. Most casuals aren’t expressing much to many places in the vast majority of cases. It’s more common for casual people to mention an issue to friends a few times in a discord channel or FC chat, but never much more, while hardcore players will actively find the places to express their opinions.

I love hearing about how they move expansions around. It was always interesting to me to hear that "Endwalker" was originally supposed to be 7.00, but he didn't want to drag zodiark and hyd out any longer and brought it up to 6.00 instead.

I really think they should have tackled job identity THEN battle content, not the other way around. The way they're doing it just makes the job identity wait worse, while new battle encounters are new battle encounters and so less to complain about. So it's like we're stuck with jobs they already KNOW are bad for another 2 years.

Before DT he said that they had a few routes in mind, weren't sure how players would react to various specific plot points in 7.0, and they were going to see how people feel about them before committing to a direction. I'm assuming that they at least had a grounded source-focused and grander multiversal (plus maybe time travel, based on interview hints) version of the story. I think the conflicting vibes between the first and second half of 7.0 were them throwing the starts of both directions at us and seeing which one most players preferred. I'm guessing they went away a scrapped 6 year plan with tons of grounded stories with various small cultures, and committed to one where we get a shallower look at a much wider range of places across the shards.

Yoshida says a lot of things. Sometimes they have plans up to 10.0, some times they just make things up on the spot. It just depends on his mood for answering the question but none of it is honest.

@@idowhatiwant3557 Given how meandering and un-focused the MSQ has been since the end of Endwalker, it's really had to believe they have anything more planned out for the next 3 or 4 expansions other than where we might be going. His assertions just don't come off as credible.

​@@foxyfoxington2651The Endwalker patch story and Dawntrail MSQ had heavy focus on shard travel being a major plot elemebt and even the Endwalker 8-man raid hinted at it with the Heart of Sabiek bring hinted at coming from another dimension. There has clearly been a big focus on Shard travel so saying its meandering and unfocused is just factual wrong given that there is a very clear focus.

@@griggins I strongly suggest watching the CS in *any* other language. The writing still isn't to my tastes, but the VA makes it so much worse. The German voice made *that* papa scene feel like I was about to see the end of several characters then. Japanese, my usual, makes Wuk a lot more tolerable. I assume even French is better. Check some scenes out on YT, you'll not like the story, but see how poorly they did the English.

@notmousse I won't argue, I've watched comparisons and other languages are better, for sure. I didn't really mind the VA outside of Wuk by the end of the game, where I was really just sick of the character and wish she was mostly done after she became Dawn Servant with Koana.

I don't know why but I have a feeling that the story will not be as good. Judging from the fact Square Enix has been consulting and getting writing done from Sweet Baby Inc, and just recently removed themselves from SBI's clientele, I'd say this boat is rocky for me. I truly hope my comment ages like milk though.

There was going to be another expansions between ShB and EW that took place in Garlemald. It is why so much of ShB's end game was very Garlemald related. And I doubt SB was going to be before HW. Because we were already very much going toward HW in ARR. But the were also building up SB.

I *seriously* doubt that Yoshi-P meant "stronger -than Pictomancer-", especially given what he's said about the intention for new jobs to be stronger. The text isn't completely clear, sure, but I interpret it as Black Mage was intended to be stronger than it turned out, though still below Pictomancer while Picto's still the shiny new thing.

That doesn't fit the design philosophy behind selfish DPS jobs. The trade-off being that because they don't bring raid buffs, they instead have considerably higher damage. PCT was meant to be high damage because it's a caster that has no raise, but since it also has a raid buff, it's not supposed to be higher than BLM.

Hardcore people tend to be more mechanically focused and in depth with their feedback, but that doesn't mean they're the only people who have insight, nor does it mean only their positions should be heard as "mattering" vs others. Not everyone's articulate, but that doesn't mean their feedback isn't highly relevant.

Feedback matters depending on who you're sourcing feedback from and what feature. A top #1 Ultimate raider is a great person to poll for feedback on difficulty of the current raid tier and/or ultimate. They probably wouldn't be my first choice if I needed feedback on a casual feature like Island Sanctuary or this upcoming cosmic exploration. MMOs are such a deeply complex organism with tools to appeal to everyone that you can't sort just ONE person or group. That said, feedback should matter depending on the content. Just as I won't poll an ultimate raider on lifestyle content, I likely won't be asking a guy who only does 1 duty roulette a week about the state of savage raiding barring MAYBE how I could get him to try it.

@@CaptnMarvelous Yeah, but that's types of content. When it comes to Job design, that covers everyone. For example, raiders say all the time they want SMN and RDM raises removed, since they don't enjoy them in their content as deaths often lead to wipes, and they don't like the damage raise tax... ...but conversely, casual players LOVE bein gable to salvage crazy situations in casual content (4, 8, and 24 mans) where they can really help out with combat raises and they don't care about lost damage GCDs or damage since there aren't enrages in the content they do. Both player types get the same Jobs. There's not a "raider RDM and a "casual RDM", unless you consider BLM the "raider RDM" and RDM the "casual RDM", I guess. So the Devs need to listen to both groups when it comes to Job design. Now, they could listen to the raiders say RDM and SMN need to do more damage/be tuned to hit harder, that's fine, that won't affect casual players. But removing their Raises, Vercure, and so on, things that casuals use and like to use, is a problem, as that's a big component of what these players find fun. Additionally, one problem with listening to the hardcore players is...that's how you get homogenization. Many of the things they want changed NOW will lead to Jobs being even more the same (for example, removing raise utility). Likewise, it was the hardcore that complained about buff alignment, as casual players use them haphazardly (or not at all) and didn't care, so that hardcore feedback ultimately led to the dreaded 2 min meta and player complaints about Jobs being samey. This is why everyone needs to be listened to, not just the hardcore players.

@@SubduedRadical Both players get the same jobs, but the content design in this game, if you are a casual player, most of your jobs kit really does not matter cause you will never use it. The current result of job design from this interview, is due to feedback from HW, which is a sign that they have ignored feedback for 4 expansions now. THIS is the problem.

They have all 13 reflections on napkins, they are making the content for the arc of 7.1-7.5 which leads into 8.0, which they are probably done writing, and writing 8.1-8.5 minus some changes later, and then probably have some working on the general scripts for 9.0 and a general outline for 10.0. That's my guess.

Might not be exactly how they are but they talked about it back then, and it makes sense that they would get heavily above, plus with the 2020 pandemic it was probably easier to get ahead on story planning.

@@oddnightsky1367??? They aren't holding back forays just for fun? They are still building the content since they have a bunch of teams working on the game at the same time and on different aspects. It's not like they just have them on a flashdrive somewhere and are waiting until 7.2 to plug them in. Eureka was 4.25, Bozja was 5.35. These are huge pieces of content that take lots of time to develop and we don't know how many people working on it have to work on other parts of the game too. More content right now would be nice, but we live in a world with limits.

​@@suros8105 That's fine, but it's also impacting the bottom line. If there's no longer term kind of content, then they're relying on raid content, housing, mogstation and devoted fans who will maintain subs indefinitely no matter what to keep the studio funded. Plenty of people got the expansion, did everything they wanted to do within a month, and have unsubbed until there's something they're interested in doing. 7.1 will add ultimate and alliance raids, but that kind of content caters to the people who were happy with 7.0. It's not going to bring a lot of people back, and if it does it'll likely be for a month tops. I'm personally taking a break to play FF16, SM2, PoE2, and MH:Wilds. That should line up with more things I want to do being added in 7.2x, and that's when I'll give the game a shot again. But if they had released one of those long term contents into the gane in 7.1, they might have gotten an extra $45 from me.

Post DT doesn't even really exist yet beyond the same 8 man raid and 2 extremes that every expansion has had. Diadem 1.0 came in 3.1 Palace of the Dead came in 3.35 and expanded in 3.45 Eureka Anemos was added in 4.25 Heaven-on-High was added in 4.35 Bozjan Southern Front was added in 5.35 Dawntrail hasn't even had its 7.1 patch yet

This literally contradicts every other interview from yoshiP. During the build up to 7.0, he said many times that they don’t know what the next 10 year arc will be. That they need to create threads to pull on. I doubt that’s changed

I don't think it's crazy to imagine that before 7.0 they had at a bullet point list of possible directions and that in the 3 months after launch they've spent the time working out a lot of that future story stuff.

Please stop with this "hardcore players are the only feedback that matters" mentality, Happy. It's toxic. Your content is often great but you have this tunnel vision that only the opinions of raiders matter. To be honest, the opinions of players on the extremes should be ignored actually. The ultrahardcore elite 1% World First Raiders and the super-casual crowd who can't even be bothered to run content without the help of Trusts? Their opinions don't matter because they skew the data too wildly. Hardcore players won't be satisifed until every piece of content is savage-tier difficulty, and likewise ultracasuals won't be happy til they can just click one button and complete everything with no effort. Those two extremes cancel each other out, and therefore they don't matter in the grand scheme of what's best for this game.

So, another decade of being a babysitter, because EW/DT wasn't bad enough LOL They better bring in some new writers. I don't know if I can stand being a babysitter for 3 expansions in a row. It's a bit old.

It'll never happen, but XIV needs to shake up their endgame patterns. They should reconsider bringing back the stat materia (STR/VIT/MND, etc) but limit it to ONE slot on any gear. Merit points to allow us to augment our jobs. This will be beneficial for endgame for a little extra edge. Or gear augmentation where you can reroll gear for a boost to random stats/weaponskills. Have that cost poetics or second set of tomes per even patch where it would incentivize playing to farm tomes for more rerolls. Relic weapons should be closer in ilvl to savage weapons with each patch, but with a longer set of objectives to justify work = reward. Like clearing a current EX trial for a key item for upgrade also clearing unreal for another key item to boost the ilvl as something optional. This wouldn't negate the new open world content where we normally get relics, but it would be a step to get more people to do EX/Unreal.

@@1337penguinman My opinion is to have more relic kind of weapons. Relic that tied to specific content like chaotic alliance raid is perfect for this. Ever kill it can drop a material to upgrade your weapon.

Please keep RNG stats out of the gearing system. I dont want FFXIV gear to turn into an ARPG simulator where I constantly chase the the perfect rolls and simply get frustrated and give up after hours and hours that amount to nothing gained at all. FFXIVs gear being linear, boring and forgettable (statwise) is why I like it.

Stats Materia was an absolute disaster, and trust me when I say this. You DO NOT want RNG gear augmentation of any kind. It is not good for any game whatsoever.

Although AI gets a lot of hate, ChatGPT does a pretty good job with translation via copying and pasting the article and saying "translate this from korean to english:" The title (according to ChatGPT): "Yoshida Naoki P/D: 'With the story we are preparing, Final Fantasy 14 can last for 20 years.'" Though I am not sure how completely accurate it is, it cannot be worse than Google Translate.

Which is still better than your average poster or news headline writer. If Yoshida said "We are not adding loot boxes to the paid shop, we will NEVER have loot boxes to the cash shop." Then the headline writer would write "Final Fantasy XIV adding Loot boxes?" Then 5 paragraphs and 25 ads later you find out "Yoshida said 'We are not adding loot boxes to the paid shop, we will NEVER have loot boxes to the cash shop.' " Yay capitalism... You know about 40 reddit posters will read the headline and go to Reddit to say why they are unsubbing and Yoshida would have to make another statement as the cycle continues.

Okay, well I don't what Black Mages you're talking to but now that the dust has settled, most of the Black Mages I know still main the job. It was always a vocal minority that didn't like the changes. The problem is that they've lost their identity and need to be back on top for DPS. Picto just brings too much else to the table to be higher than them, and if FRU has any downtime at all, Picto is going to go right back to being insanely strong.

Most of the Black Mages I know (me included) changed to PCT. So what is the truth now? Anecdotal evidence much? What vocal minority? BLM players already where the minority in jobs before. But it's a cool word to throw around to appear of having the high ground in the discussion. BLM plays horrible even now. The problem is not just that it's behind PCT in numbers but also in fun because it is completely railroaded. The changes where entirely unneeded period. The job was perfectly fine and loved as it was before.

I've played all of present DT content so far and I'm not pleased with it. Most of it was uninterruptable cutscenes or lackluster interaction with repetitive dialogue from a very small selection of characters that got stretched awkwardly between a set of dungeons (even a One Piece filler episode is more satisfying; this felt like Dragon Ball Super filler). It wasn't satisfying; it was tedious. The hardcore players aren't happy (classes feel homogenized), most of the casuals aren't happy (having to rely on older content to keep them busy, which takes the shine off appeal), and the ones that didn't care for FFXIV until DT dropped and suddenly gave it glowing reviews are never happy with the game unless certain criteria are met, and if this is considered a flop, this angle may not be approached again and that selection of players will ultimately quit to go play something else. They (the team) missed the mark on the opening of this expansion; they know this. I'm hoping that whatever Mr. Yoshi meant by his hint at already having the future written work for the next expansions already laid out means that the team can correct what they missed with DT and try to adopt the execution that made Shadowbringer so popular. I want to empathize with Mr. Yoshi, who has delivered incredible works before, and acknowledge that he was split between 16 and 14 and it's why DT felt the way it did at launch. It was a fumble, but it can be improved upon. We don't need "new direction"; we need stability and growth. I for one suggested using the 'dead zone of DT' [avoiding the name for spoiler consideration] and repurposing it to a Gold Saucer 2.0 that would make it feel like an extension of the carnival dungeon we got introduced to. Give it a reason to exist; give us a reason to dig deeper into shallow zones. It's one suggestion, but it at least offers more.
