I've tried your sort of poncho before, but the only poncho I will now use is one with a full-frontal zip. Mine is an Altus Atmospheric, from Spain. When it arrived, its bottom hem ended at my knees, so my wife extended the hem by sewing a 6" wide length of Tyvek to it. It's more or less ideal now. I live in the UK and these days I never wear shorts due to the danger of ticks and Lymes Disease, we are often warned about it. When wearing my Altus I also wear waterproof gaiters, the end result is I am dry from head to feet.

Sleeved “ponchos” are known as cagoules. A poncho can be opened flat into a sheet, whereas a cagoule is an enclosed garment. They were popular during the 70’s, originating in France by the French outdoor company Millet, and made popular by Patagonia. Short ponchos are known as serapes. I prefer cagoules made with a zipper in front. A criteria for a good cagoule is a wide hem that can easily be pulled over your knees when you sit with your knees up. Cagoules were used for emergency bivouacs.

I thru hiked the AT with a cagoule, Sierra Designs used to make one. We had a crazy amount of rain and it worked exceedingly well!

if this had huge pit zips I would buy it for sure, until then this is basically a more durable version of my $2 long sleeved plastic poncho. I do pair my sil nylon rain jacket with a rain skirt so a poncho would be a more convenient version of what i'm using as of now. If this had pit zips and a half zip to dump heat this would be an amazing product.

I still prefer my The Packa. Long sleeves, front two way zipper, long pit zips, brimmed hood, pockets and a compartment for your pack. If you've ever had to fight getting a poncho over you and your pack when a storm picks up, the value of a front zipper becomes immediately apparent.

Its someting I had previously dismissed but am now experimenting with. They are really warm! I have been using the jerven bag and a rab silponcho.

I used the regular version last trip because they accidentally sent me that instead of the sleeved version. I did still like it better than the S2S, easier to throw on and the built in belt is really nice. I thread the loop through my waistbelt and tuck it back out of the way and really really like being able to throw it on without having to stop. I still want to try the sleeved version though! I have my eye on the Altus one, which has a zipper like the Packa, but seems a better design. Pain to get either to Canada though and heavier than I'd like, but I suppose if it is likely to pour all trip it's worn weight anyhow, eh?

missed opportunity not including the scene from Seinfeld with George and his swishing pants. xD

Great review! I clicked on the link and was excited at the price until I realised it was on US $. So shocking that the price is double in Canadian. Ha ha. Still a good price though. I wish It had a draw string at the bottom as in a pinch you could cinch it around you waist and it could be shorter.

There is a non-branded version of this for about 20€/$ on Aliexpress. For this price, it was a no-brainer for me. If I go on a tour and KNOW the weather will be miserable for long periods of time, I'd probably opt for a jacket and pants. But for normal tours, where weather might be bad occasionally for limit periods of time, I'll opt for the light to pack poncho every time.

Enjoyed the video thanks for posting! 🎉 not sure if it’s enough airflow flow but I love the built in pack cover functionality! Might have to try one out!

Nice find. I like FroggsToggs poncho, but its not very durable. Upside is I don't use it too often so 12 years and still in great shape, for 20 bucks and ultra light. Maybe 3FUL is more durable. 95% of the time in the rain I will use a hiking umbrella

Informative. Strange, I pushed the 'LIKE' button but it did not registered. Maybe it takes time. Anyway 👍👍

Not sure if you have looked at the North Coast Trail down to Cape Scott, its a beautiful hike along the ocean with amazing sand beaches to set camp. I did it with a group of 7 back in July 2020. It's not the mountains but its tougher than you would think loll

Not much different from an Anorak or Cagoule. A basic problem is that it doesn't breathe. I wouldn't care to wear it during Summer as your shoulders, head and arms will undoubtedly sweat due to heat build-up. That's why I prefer my DIY Tyvek Anorak, non-heat reflective for warm weather and heat reflective for cool and cold weather. I also made heat reflective over-pants. The Tyvek is breathable, wind and water repellent or I waterproof it, still breathable.
