I have never started sweet potatoes, but I would love to try for next year.

I'm going to try too even though they don't grow well here according to so many here in western WA. Some say you can, do why not me. Good luck on starting!

You can also steam the leaves and they are edible and ok in a quiche or something like that. Wife eats them right off the vines but that aint my bag of Macdonald fries

Yeah I'm not big on the leaves. I know people that love them though

I got an organic purple sweet potato, purple skin purple flesh at the grocery store. It was over $3 for one potato! It made so many slips I ended up crowding my 4 x 8 bed and giving my potato to my friend for the second growth of slips! But I planted in June so I have to wait to see what I have underground. The Hawaiian (or Okinawan) sweet potatoes I could find were all treated with something and wouldn't grow at all. I have a bed of orange sweet potatoes from a potato from the grocery store too. I don't think that was labeled organic but it sprouted slips really well. My first sweet potato crop! I'm so excited.

You can cut off lengths of vine and put them in jars of water. They will root. All my sweet potatoes come from rooted vines.

That works too I just don't want to keep up with them until next year

I want to start my own sweet potatoe slips next winter but i had assumed that you want to start them from a larger potato for the largest harvest, kind of like with regular potatoes. If you can start slips them from any size sweet potato and there not be a correlation in the final product size, then thats a great idea!

I usually have to use one a little larger due to rot but yes those small ones work

@@TJtheHAWK Potatoes act almost like a tulip or similar spring bulbs. The size they grow is mostly dependent on stored energy, and part environmental. They have a short season too. So they will not keep growing all year. Sweet potatoes are more like other plants or veggies. They just don't really stop growing as long as the weather is right. Bigger sweet potatoes do produce more and larger slips. But it's not a bad thing to have slightly smaller slips. You don't want to have them be rootbound. it'll produce badly shaped tubers. The most important thing for them is really time and weather.

I've tried starting my own slips for the past two years and they only get about two inches tall and then just stop growing. I think they weren't getting enough sun. I don't know. I haven't had much luck growing sweet potatoes either( I bought slips). I'm not going to give up, though. I will get some sweet potatoes eventually. I didn't get my slips planted until June this year and I'm leaving them in the ground as long as I can.

You can do it just keep at it. I will be doing more with sweet potatoes over the winter. It's my favorite to grow

Love the idea of using the smaller sweet potatoes! I do have a question though. I see a lot of people growing sweet potatoes in raised beds. How is it to grow directly in ground? Do I need to build/buy a raised bed for them? Thanks

When do you plant your potatoes to start the slips? Last year I planted way too early and had vines growing all around my kitchen, But by the time it got warm enough to plant they had all died.

I start around February and then move them outaide around April. They start to get crazy by then but managable

Bought sweet potato slips for a new variety, paid I think $13 plus shipping for 12 slips, only 8 of which survived. Turns out to about $2 per slip. Always have tiny potatoes to save plus cut vines to put in water and plant again.
