I have an implementation of NC on AWS that I shifted from using S3 external storage due to the costs of the desktop client scanning the buckets. I had thought that the scanning would not have cost impacts but it did due to the fact I believe that S3 is not tied to a region. The actual data coming in and going out was fairly minor. How does the use of the desktop clients on a linode implementation with object storage impact what would be charged.
With object storage, we include free inbound transfer and up to 1TB outbound. So depending on how much storage you are using, and how often your desktop client scans your files, you could be saving a lot in transfer costs by switching to Linode.
One thing you missed that i think would have been great is to notate that you should enable sharing in external storage administration if you want that feature in nextcloud. Otherwise, you can't.
I just set this up, but I'm having issues getting files larger then like 512MB to upload. I googled and found the "Uploading big files > 512MB" in nextcloud's docs. But since this is a docker container I have no idea where these files are that I am suppose to edit. And whenever a new docker image gets pulled will those settings even be saved...
So this creates a folder for the user, but is there a way to set the entire storage to go into the bucket. Especially for all users so that you set it up once and everybody you create will go to that location? Another question is what kind of cost could you see. I know there are a lot of variables, but ballpark on the per-size as well as how much actual-usage and cost would Nextcloud use up on an average work/school day with files synchronizing? I know it can't be very precise because people use it differently, but if there is a baseline example and measurements, I an hoping to extrapolate for my particular use scenario. Great video. I am having the exact same problem, eu host does not work - get red circle with error (not helpful when there is no description about the error in nextcloud).
I have had nextcloud running with object storage for a few years , but after time junk files build up in the object storage ( in my case something like 125GB junk files ! ) and nextcloud has 128GB of actual files that are available. the junk files appear to get stuck in the object storage from failed uploads failed deleted files or other errors. some of these bugs have been fixed with nextcloud updates and others appear. but the junk files keep growing. Do you know of a way nextcloud can scan the object storage and delete any that shouldn't be there in the bucket? If not I am afraid this solution is useless..

The updated scripts simplify this a lot! What I'm curious though for, is it possible to use the external storage as the users home directly, or to segregate the storage per user?
I tried everything you did and the browser keeps saying I need to change the 'trusted domains' setting of the config.php file when I enter the IP address from Linode. I have installed nextcloud on my Manjaro gnome as a snap image. Could you, or someone in the comments, please help or explain if I did something wrong? I looked at your other video for setting up nextcloud and there wasn't anything on there about dealing with untrusted domains.

my question is, how fast it is on external storage. I used to have bit of a pain having nextcloud on HDDs, expetially when hosting bunch of photos. Previews would get generated really slow (i think that has been fixed since tho)

Hi, I just went through these steps. When trying to access via my domain or IP from linode dashboard I just get 'Index of/' apache...debian server. I don't get the setup page like you did by simply pasting in the IP. What could be the issue?
Linode employee here - is it possible that you've not given NextCloud enough time to install before trying to access it? Off the top of my head, that seems as it would be a likely cause of what you're seeing. In the video, Gardiner states that it could take up to 5 minutes for it to completely install, so I'd recommend waiting for that full 5 minutes and trying again.
