I will be introducing you to NextCloud, an open-source cloud based platform for storing files and photos, collaborating, sharing contacts and calendars and even group messaging within your server group. This is a solution meant to replace the privacy stealing cloud options like Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Photos, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox and so on.
Have your own personal cloud storage that keeps your data safe from prying eyes whose intent is financially benefit from your personal information.
In this video, I will explain what NextCloud does. I will show you what it looks like on Android, IOS, and Windows. And then later in the video, we will actually set up a Nextcloud server using Linode as the cloud provider.

I have setup nextcloud for my clients and they love it. Most other people are so used to Microsoft they can't see other options as viable. Controlling your own data is important. We need to get away from the large data silos to protect our privacy. Thanks for sharing.

I have used Nextcloud, but I moved to Seafile about 2 years ago. The main reason is the way that Seafile syncs file changes. It does not need to sync the entire file when just making a small change. It sends a "delta" and then the server applied the delta change to the cloud copy. This is VERY efficient and much faster. I have not revisited Nextcloud recently, so maybe they have improved this already. But Seafile is quite good and there is a Windows and mobile app.

Unfortunately this hasn't changed - there's a nasty patent situation so we can't implement this feature.

i use nextcloud to keep my documents, music, and pictures in sync between the different laptops and computers at home. Works well with real life save backups.

Nice yeah I recently did this I had old computer with hard drives so I set up nextcloud in a docker container and set up a cloudflare argo tunnel + domain name all free for remote connections to it. Also I set up the 2 factor authentication for login.

I just bought a QNAP NAS for home but i'm not sure if i can use a NextCloud on it. Is NAS better then NextCloud or is a differtent thing? Sorry for the stupid question but I'm new to this.

I wanted to make a home cloud like this some years ago but had no idea about networking. I bought a basic two drive Synology NAS, and then was shocked to find it had no wireless and had to work through the net connected router. It's sat unused for 5 years. I tried connecting an old router to it, but it took forever just to transfer one picture, so I gave up. :( Can anyone explain simply how to set up a home cloud using the Synology as the data store, distributing wirelessly, separated from the house BT router?

Do you know whats more secure than using nextcloud on linode? Using nextcloud on a local server so you have access to your cloud anywhere in the world and for free if you are in the same network

Nextcloud is great if you are going to self-host your own server, but if you are planning to pay a company/provider to do it for you, just DONT. I got scammed by Webo Hosting and QloudData after I paid them for extra storage space subscription. Too glad I used PayPal and I managed to get my money back after they refused to reply.

Dear Rob, can I transfer data from nextcloud's own server to my personal server, if I want to switch from nextcloud's own server to my personal home server built upon nextcloud softwares like you mentioned above?

So Nextcloud doesn't run any server - we only provide software you have to run yourself (or which is ran by various hosting providers). You can transfer files. We have migration tools from Google, Dropbox and OneDrive, too, but currently not from one Nextcloud server to another. Well, for files yes - you can connect two Nextcloud's and transfer the files. And manually export calendars for example. But it's not a full-transfer-service yet. We'd like to do this one day but there's a lot we'd like to do so it's on a long todo list ;-)

Id love to know how to set this up on a local, private windows machine in 2022. I have a hard time understanding why someone who believes in privacy and control over content would suggest a remote server. Google drive is JUST AS GOOD. I have a hard time understanding why someone who believes in making privacy accessible to all, would suggest a Linux based system. Most of us are probably on Windows.

1. Learn what a VPS is. Yes totally self hosted is best, however a VPS is the next best, and you're out of the grip of technocratic totalitarian big tech. 2. Windows is a curable disease. Intellectual laziness is what makes it malignant. I learned how to use Linux in a weekend.

when you learn calDAV, please do a video on the details for us. I installed Syncthing less than 2 days ago and like it - though I made a mistake somehow and all of the cleaning/rearranging I did on one PC got UNDONE by the other when I turned it on. And, I think that deleted at least one photo that I certainly miss.

Use Rob’s app. Signal is great but requires a phone number. Rob’s app just ask for a username and password. If you’re gonna use signal don’t give them your phone number. Use a number from something like Hushed app.

Sir - perhaps a few SNAP SHOTS of the uses as you describe them would help make listening to the recitation of functions more enduring. iOS does have a file system. Simply named files. There were a few things about the Apple words that weren’t completely correct but I came here because I wanted to know a bit more about nextcloud and therefore this clip was informative.

Nextcloud providers have plenty of insider bugs that make you an easy target as opposed to other cloud providers. You are better off encrypting your data folders and using a reliable provider. Better yet - host your own media server that is encrypted...

@@lofenoialof5320 nextcloud has an option (for admins) to encrypt all data. If you want to install it you can simply do "sudo snap install nextcloud" on ubuntu and start playing with it

Stupid question here. If you say google and Apple scan our information. Linode can do the same even if we are leasing the server space? Big companies do not trust Cloud Services for the same reason. Private information SHOULD NOT. I repeat SHOULD NOT be stored on the could unless you hare hosting the Servers in a private property and information shares is propertly encrypted,

Honestly, many think that privacy is a right but the truth is it is a previledge to the rich and also a marketing strategy built on capitalizing on our fear of survelliance. i just started using syncthing. easy to get devices to acknowledge each other, but labelling those shared folders get confusing and having one device undo the work of the other sucks. I didn't read enough on it. Got impatient. Will read more on it soon so my files stay nice.

The problem with Nextcloud is that it is not encrypted and many of the features are available with most cloud providers. It can be a lot of work and most people are not cut out to do this.

@@fl0sserelli I can sign up with MEGA and get the same features with a MEGA account that I would with NextCloud and not have to invest so much time and effort into setting up an account. Unlike Nextcloud, MEGA Is encrypted. Anyone not willing to make it easier for users is self-defeating. If you want people to take control of their data, it has to be a simple process. Otherwise, many people won't. Is that what you want?

The way we see it is that it's a problem that almost all user data is, currently, owned by 4-5 mega-corporations. If it'd be spread out over hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of providers, things would be better. You can find a local (in your city?) hosting provider, talk to them, figure out if you trust them - and put your data there. Compare it to bakeries. Can you trust the super big chains to not screw with your food? I don't. But I trust my local bakery, I know the folks running it, they won't fsck with me as we're all part of this same community. I agree that encrypting everything at all times is better, but that has downsides - you can't access files from a browser, for example. And if you do offer that, you're offering a false sense of security. Why? Simple. A browser is an extension of the server, running code FROM the server. So encrypting a file in a browser doesn't provide any protection from the server - if you don't trust Mega, don't trust their browser site to encrypt your files without sending your key to somewhere... Know what I mean? So encryption only works if you can encrypt end to end with local apps - that should be 100% open source, otherwise you still have to trust whomever gives you those apps to not put in sh*t that sends your keys to some server. We do offer end-to-end in our clients, it's optional (per-folder) and means no browser access to those files. Some other solutions offer fully end-to-end - it's a choice you have as user, so I don't mean to dunk on Mega here, they offer a decent and cheap service. Just saying - things aren't black and white. Heck, any competitor that isn't google/dropbox or one of the other huge ones is an improvement - we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket. That's just a huge risk.
