I had the 5X returned it the next day. It looks and feels cheap the fingerprint scanner should be in the front not back. And the speaker yes one speaker is one of the worst I have heard. Moto X is better in everyway except not having a fingerprint scanner and USB C type.
+Chao Hong Li You have your phone on a desk and you want it unlocked how would you do it with the 5x without picking it up? Who said the iphone 6 and S6 have non-ergonomic finger scanners? They are in the best location. You push the button to turn on the device at the same time the phone gets unlocked. Sounds pretty ergonomic to me.
Moto X Pure is the winner no matter what. I believe the Nexus 5x should go down in cost by $50. Honestly, $380 for 16gb and no sd card expansion? That's a killer.
Jared Russo It is a system mod. I'm quite sure there is only one driver, so you would have to take it apart, find a driver that fits, wire it to the other driver (somehow) and then hope it works. It isn't something you can just root in, as far as I know.
I don't really understand why some people choose a phone simply because of the fingerprint scanner. When the Galaxy S5 first came out I was like," Omg a fingerprint scanner I can't live without it", and then slowly but surely I stopped using it because it became more a hassle and felt sort of gimmicky. That's just my opinion though.
I'm one those people lol to be honest though I didn't hop on the whole fingerprint thing until the tech was better integrated, and I started with the Huawei sensor on the honor 7 so I probably had a much better experience. It makes a world of difference in terms of unlocking the device and added functionality (in the honor 7 you can use the scanner to toggle the notification drawer/open the apps switcher to name a few functions). I find myself swiping the back of other phones instinctively in an attempt to unlock it, this is a testament to how natural the gesture feels to some people. Plus I find that we overwork our thumbs way too much when handling phones, and this input uses other fingers which frees up resources, in my usage anyway. Hope this provided some insight into your query. You really have to try the new Huawei sensor on the back though. Honestly. Side note: The whole index finger being used instead of the thumb actually convinced me personally that this is a better placement for the scanner than even the new Sony side sensor.
Thanks for your response I actually was going to pick up the Huawei Honor 7 but I waited to get the Moto X Pure Edition. Maybe my experience would've been better had I had waited to get a phone with better fingerprint tech.
nanarocxie No problem. The Pure is undeniably better that the Honor 7, good choice. I'm actually upgrading to the 6P. Maybe, maybe not. But given you recently upgraded, it's not worth taking a look into at the moment. At least you know now why people are so keen on those fingerprint scanners.
Well to the average person I would have to ask: Are you truly willing to give up a good experience so that people think better of you on social media? Because I'm on the 5x right now and I can definitely say that while my pictures have never looked better, theres not much else to love here. Other than the nexus name itself anyway.
So does the Moto X.. I just can't comprehend buying a phone with only 16GB of storage... period... The speaker on the 5x is terrible, and I heard the battery is meh..
the Nexus 5X has had extreme hardware failure issues. Search Nexus 5X bootloops. Having owned both I will tell you the Moto X Pure despite not having the fingerprint scanner is a much higher quality phone for the money. MXP has Expandable storage, 3 gb's of ram vs 2 in the 5X. MXP build quality is much better than the 5X as well. The software is not as vanilla as the Nexus 5X's but the MXP Trump's the 5X for the value buyer. Anyone buying a N5X right now is not going to be happy moving forward.
The only thing I don't like about the Moto X is that it doesn't have an Amoled display anymore and it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner but everything else is perfect!
+TheUltimateRom yea I thought I would want amoled because the idea of darker blacks sounds better. But went to a Best Buy and looked at the galaxy S6 and all of them on the display had extreme burn ins. So I don't really care for it anymore.
I'm wondering if the picture quality of the photos (e.g. better color) would be improved on the Moto X Pure if it updated to Andriod 6.0 like on the Nexus 5X?
+Patrick Knight Aluminium build, fastest finger scanner, Samsung's WQHD AMOLED display, larger battery, better front camera, more consistent back camera, USB-C port, faster processing power, faster LPDDR4 RAM, Gorilla Glass 4 (not 3 like on Pure), and the latest stock Android! So yea, Nexus 6P is more worth it imo. Unless you really wanted that SD card expansion.
***** I dunno about you, but I'd personally pay extra $100 for an AMOLED display and fingerprint scanner alone. The colors of AMOLED is so beautiful, specially when watching movies. Also the Nexus 6P is noted as the best Android smartphone by couple of reviewers. The phone has been receiving such good receptions.
I have both. I have a bamboo Moto X Pure with 32GB ($475), and it's a beautiful phone, but I'm selling it and keeping the Nexus 5X with 32GB ($400). The Moto X Pure has four major annoyances for me. (1) The pattern unlock screen is buggy if you use a pattern unlock. (2) It doesn't quite work with Google Fi. (3) The USB port is the opposite direction of every other phone I've had (narrow side towards the screen), so I'm always trying to plug it in backwards. (4) The edges are so thin and the bezel is so thin that when you grab the phone you have to be very careful that your fingers don't wrap around the edge. It's very easy to register accidental taps with the hand that's holding the phone. The only thing that annoys me about the Nexus 5X is that it doesn't have stereo speakers on the front, but oh well, iPads also only have speakers on one side. I actually like that the Nexus 5X is lightweight because I run marathons. I wish there was an Android Wear watch with GPS that would actually last the length of a marathon, but there isn't (hopefully the Sony SmartWatch 4 will). About the pattern unlock problem on the Moto X Pure: The proximity sensors will turn on the screen and show your notifications. It also has a cool feature that is supposed to let you swipe-unlock the notification and go straight to the app. I use the pattern lock, though, and this feature is broken when the screen lock is enabled. When a notification is on the lock screen, it acts like it should be swipe-unlockable, but you can't actually unlock it. It literally does nothing except make a little haptic feedback shake when you swipe the unlock icon. The unlock doesn't work. This means that when you pick up the phone, if there are no notifications then everything works normally. But if you see that there is a notification, you have to ignore the swipe-unlock icon. Then you have to press the power button which clears the notification, then you have a normal swipe-unlock icon that you can use, then you do the pattern unlock, then you pull down your notifications, then you click on the notification to go to the app. It turns it from a 1-step process to a 5-step process, and it's SUPER annoying. So if you have the Moto X, you either will be constantly annoyed by every notification, or you will need to leave pattern or PIN unlock turned off. Having a phone with a fingerprint sensor on the back saves me from all that stupidity. Also, the Nexus 5X is made for Project Fi. The Moto X Pure will work with Project Fi if you already activated your Fi SIM on a Nexus phone, but this means you need to borrow someone's Nexus phone, and the Moto X will only use T-Mobile towers. The Nexus 5X works with T-Mobile and Sprint towers on Project Fi.
+Nelson Guerrero Playing Hearthstone kills the battery pretty fast on either of them. I feel like the Nexus 5X is a little better. But outside of playing Hearthstone for an hour, you're probably splitting hairs. Reviews seem to show the Moto X having worse battery life, but those were mostly done before it got the Marshmallow update. So they both have great battery life. They both have the same processor. The Moto X Pure has a slightly bigger battery but also a slightly bigger screen. They both run Marshmallow now, so they both have awesome standby time. And they both have 15-watt rapid charging, although the Moto X is using a non-standard "turbo" charger while the Nexus 5X does rapid charging with a standard USB Type C cable.
I always wondered why Android Authority actually wasted recourses filming this comparison. The Moto has the bigger better screen, the bigger better camera, more ram, bigger battery, WAY better build quality and build materials, as well as more customization, front firing stereo speakers, and all the Goodies that come in Motorola's software. This is literally no contest. And I don't say that as someone who never owned them. I owned both but ended up returning the Nexus.
+Damian Tanner Yeah it's just bizarre that they would only put 2GB of RAM in their device, when Motorola was putting 2GB of RAM in their mid level Moto X back in 2013. So when cutting corners like that, it would've been appropriate for them to price it better. It should have never been priced up at the same level as the Moto X Pure......... The Nexus 5X isn't a terrible phone, Google just overpriced it by a LOT.
Dinkleberg x It doesn't suck, but it could be better. You can easily get through the day though, if you don't use power intensive apps. 6 hours in Berlin searching for directions and stuff I used 40% of the battery. So if you are doing tourist things taking a lot of photos searching for directions all day long a power bank (2600mAh is probably enough) is quite useful.
got 5x yesterday just superb.. even have some of limitaions (no sdcard,1speaker) when compare to moto X ..5x handle mashmallow smoothly ,vry fluid & fast processor i have used ever , quick fingerprint sensor , superb rear facing camera more deatial , sound quality are good in earphones
prefer design, fingerprint scanner and camera of 5x. Plus google support you get with 5x. I prefer build materials, amount of ram, speakers and screen of the moto x. Compromise either way but at the current $329 price i'd take the 5x. At near $400 or more i'd go for moto x I think..
The 5X is so underwhelming considering all the stuff you get with the X Pure for the same price. For $20 more, you get a higher quality QHD display, metal frame, dual front facing speakers, extra gb of ram, micro SD slot, the ability to customize your own phone, and they also managed to keep the bezels very small. The X Pure is just slightly bigger than the 5X which says a lot about the bezels on the 5X.
No card slot is a no-deal for me. 16GB is barely sufficient for something, let alone latest Android versions. I heard good stuff about the Moto X Style, perhaps I'll pick that one up. In that price, it's a no brainer.
I've own both of these but I'm returning the moto x pure, sure it has better specs but after using it for sometime I feel it's too big, the 5x is a breath of fresh air for my hands! and the fast updates is a bonus plus I love form factor and finger print scanner.
Great review. One thing I do believe you missed; With the 5X I can use Google Fi Cellular Plan and it's dual provider capabilities. Not so much for the MotoX. One provider at a time, only.
I like my Moto X but do like the screen size of the 5x. The only downsides I have comparing both is the 5x has 1 speaker compared to the 2 on the Moto X. I went with the 16gb and am very thankful now for the 64gb sd card I added. The 32gb version of the 5x should be standard.
Does anyone know if the Moto X still supports Qualcomm quick charge? I've got battery banks and car chargers with it and if I end up going with the Moto X it'd be nice to not have to replace those.
Not everyone lives in the USA, you know. In Europe the prices are way different. Where i live the 32gb Nexus 5x is about 300 US $ and the 32gb moto x is almost 450$.
Alex Hajiev In México the current price for the Nexus 5x it's 175 US dollars and for the Moto X pure edition it's 300 US dollars. So I put everything in balance and choose the Nexus 5x. I'm just waiting for it. Anyway. . besides of the construction materials I would put a cover for any of these.
I can honestly say after having a hands on experience with the Moro x pure that was just very impressive specially for the price can't beat it I think hands down is beat phone for under $400 bucks
Same situation, and I think I'll go for a second hand oneplus 3 that can be found for around 300 euros right now. But if you want to buy a new phone, I'd go for the X style.
This is kinda like the case with Nexus 5 and LG G2 back in the days. G2 were packing a ton more than the Nexus 5 and had almost the same price tag. In important cases, like battery life and camera performance (Nexus 5 sucked in terms of those things) the G2 was the clear winner and therefor came out as the champ in my taste. So does the Moto X Pure Edition.
having an issue with my moto x pure there's a buzzing noise when recording video. apparently it's software and no way to fix rn. Snapchat it's horrible
In México the current price for the Nexus 5x it's 175 US dollars and for the Moto X pure edition it's 300 US dollars. So I put everything in balance and choose the Nexus 5x. I'm just waiting for it. Anyway. . besides of the construction materials I would put a cover for any of these. I really like the photos on the Nexus 5x... way better than the Moto X.
+Abhay Rey I have to disagree with Jonathan. The 6P is incredibly expensive at this time, has a lower resolution camera (I saw some camera footage and it's not that great), also I try to avoid the SD810 because of the heat it creates (they didn't even downclocked the processor like on the OnePlus Two). Also no card slot is a huge deal breaker for me, even with the 64GB option. The 128GB version would bump the price significantly so it's a thing to look at. It does have a bigger battery though and Marshmallow at lunch, it's thinner and has a fingerprint sensor and an AMOLED screen which usually produces better colours. In addition, I find the C-type connector as a disadvantage at this time since it's not common as a micro-usb connection. But it's your choise, do whatever fits you. Enjoy your new phone :)
+TheUltimateRom I respectfully disagree with you, to me the Neus 6P is the better choice and Nexus 6P camera is actually better than the X Style it has already been proven and SD810 has no problem at all with the 6P... No card slot isn't a big deal for everyone since most people use the cloud so for many even 32gb is enough unless you're planing on recording some 4k videos...I do agree on the USB type C being a disadvantage but it only means it's future proof since soon enough everything would be converted to USB type C. But like you said it's his choice so just enjoy! Both are actually great phones :)
I've gotten so used to the gestures/features on the MXPE that I've caught myself doing it on other devices. I wave my hand over my tablet on nearly a daily basis.
I spent a month deciding between the moto x and nexus 5. I really wanted the finger print scanner on the 5. But the micro sd card is a welcomed option. Went with the moto x. I've been taking lots of pictures lately and like to save them at full size. Have and extra 64 gigs storage was just too welcoming. But I've had my nexus 5 for a year and half and LOVE pure android.
A year ago I would have been all pro-Moto but after their recent questionable decisions on update support, I'll go with the the Nexus because Moto (Lenovo) might decide in 5 months to abandon this device. Sorry, once a company screws over their customers like they have with the Moto E (launched in Feb. this year), Moto X 2 (carrier versions) and so on, I just don't trust this company.
USB type C is just a con to sell new useless cables. Micro USB with a 2 amp charger charges my 3000+ mah battery to 100% in under 2 hours. That's quick enough.
I have been using my samsung S2 for the past 4 years, and I want to buy a new phone and I'm currently doubting between the Nexus 5x, the Nexus 6P and the Sony Xperia z5. And I want to know if the huge 5.7inch screen from the Nexus 6P is really a big deal if you're not used to it (the Samsung S2 only has a 4.3 inch screen)
Moto X Pure FTW. Nexus 5X is limited to 32GB. Moto X beside having more internal storage, also supports SD card. Moto X specs are way better than Nexus 5X across the board. I just wish Moto X could be used with Google Fi.
I don't like the charger for the moto x tho. I like it when you can unplug the cable from the USB port. Should of stayed with that still.. and the double USB port from 2nd gen moto x was awesome.
its kind of obvious that the Moto X Pure is the clear winner unless you really care about the size of the phone you would know the winner of this battle before you even clicked the video
You guys should do a Nexus 6P vs. Moto X video since they're much more comparable in specs and I'm debating on whether or not I should dump my Moto for a 6P.
The way I look at it the 5x needs to come down in price. If your patient you could save an extra pay check or two and get a 6p for the price of getting the 5x in 32gb.
Damn, the Moto X Style would definitely be the perfect phone for me if it had a fingerprint scanner. Nevertheless, it is still my top phone to get. I might hold off until next year for a phone though, seeing as my OPO still is running well (and I've only had it for a year). For the next iteration of the Moto X Motorola, I expect that fingerprint scanner :)
I'd take the 5x just because its a nexus device, has completely stock android, and gets the fastest updates. Also it looks better and has a more comfortable screen size. The less ram and slightly worse specs is a downside though
What has android done to improve accessibility for people who need screen readers, and has the play store gotten any better with getting communication apps for adults? They have some for children, but I am one of many Autistic adults that left android because there were no apps that would let me tell others what I want and need.
I wanted to buy Moto X Style (pure) so much but when I saw this 5.7 inch screen I was in shock :/ it's to large, not to put nicely in the pocet so I decided on Nexus 5x. Tommorow I will get it and I hope that I will be satisfied :) he's got very good reviews. But if you don't afraid of very, very large screen take a Moto X Style, I think it's a little bit better phone.
+Emily Fuller it'S 5.2 inch screen and it has good specs. Very beutiful screen, i mean colors. Not so artificial like in samoled screens. Great camera and sound from headphones. Battery is draining to fast but i hope that next soft N7. 0 will solve this problem. 5x is a very good smartphone but i think that Moto x style is better.
How is it that the Moto X Pure has a better build quality than the Nexus 5x? Because of the metal frame? If so, then it's PERCEIVED better quality. Unless someone can prove that the plastic shell on the Nexus 5x will crack by itself in months of use... FYI, Xiaomi's phones have always have plastic shells and that's never an issue. Go to the Motorola official forums and there are reports of speaker problems, back skin problems of the Moto X Pure and customer service issues of Motorola.
Moto for the Price(moto voice, improved cam, bt no finger print sensor 😢..) and 5X for the features(finger print sensor,M out of d box, laser autofocus etc)
It's funny that I can pay $300 for an iPhone 6s 64gb on contract for two years, or I could get a moto x pure (or htc a9) for $400 and be free of contract plus have practically limitless storage...
