NF - Hate Myself Reaction (Reactionalysis) - Music Teacher Analyses The Search Album 

Hate Myself isn't only my favorite NF song, its my favorite song period. I cant believe I've literally listened to it over 2000 times (my spotify wrapped in 2021 said it was 1700 in that year alone) and never noticed how the electronic voice is gone in the final chorus!! That is so cool! Also, I love when you make predictions/say what you hope to hear later in the song and I know it's going to come, I always get so excited 😂 thank you for continuing this journey! I dont know why, but this song has become my comfort song that I listen to whenever I'm feeling anxious and it always helps calm me and get through. A couple years one of my musically talented friends figured out the chords for me so I could play it. It was really great to see your thoughts and analysis on it 😊

Listening to this song again feels strange. I started working on myself, and NF kind of marked a bad spot in life where I might have felt a bit better than I do now, but it was also a time where I never thought about how I could improve things. Which basically got me to rock bottom and it’s kind of difficult to get out of that mindset now that I’ve literally grown up with it. Also just wanted to let you know I’m still watching and it’s nice to see that you got a consistent schedule again. I just mostly don’t have the time or motivation to comment. Or I don’t have anything worthwhile to say. Playing the chords from hate myself over the interlude is actually something he did on concerts I think. I used to watch a lot of concert videos and I think I can recall him doing that.

0:00 I love this song and it very literally saved my life. I know many people say that about NF's music and I'm certain it's true. This album came out right before Covid. I loved it. It was fantastic. Then my birthday rolled around, I had an appendectomy, and exhausted my savings to pay my hospital bills so I wouldn't have debt. Then my income got slashed in half and I started wondering if I'd be able to pay rent. I've struggled with depression for most of my life, but nothing like this. I was alone, literally 1000 miles away from the closest person I knew all the way out in the middle of bum-frick-nowhere South Dakota. I knew I could disappear and do it really well. I had no connections to the area, no special places. The only thing I would need to do is figure out how to ditch my car in a way that I couldn't give them a good starting position. That's when I got therapy and was prescribed a companion animal. Now I had two problems to solve: ditch my car, and feed my cat. Around this time, I started picking NF back up again and this song came on. I put it on repeat and kept screaming out "I Hate Myself". That knowledge hit deep. I had to accept it to understand how empty I was. I didn't even hear the other lines, just "I Hate Myself". So I started listening to it more. I picked up other lines. "It's kind of hard when I hate myself". "I wish I could help/but it's hard when I hate myself." "I wish I could help". "I wish". I don't want to die. NF very literally brought me back from that point. Other songs helped. Hypochondriac by Dragged Under was the song where "I don't want to die" entered, but it was NF who helped me realize why. "I Hate Myself" because I don't hate myself. I want to hate myself, but I want to live. I want to spite these emotions and this loneliness. I want to live. I want my 10 year old cat who was been abandoned by two other families to have a home that will never leave him. I want to live because (Laila, forgive me) goddamnit God wants me to. I'm not supposed to die yet. I haven't done anything yet. I hate my emptiness, but I'm not meant to be empty. I'm NOT empty. I have so much in me that the world needs to see. I hate my inactivity, my laziness, my compliance with the thing that wants me to die. I HATE MYSELF! I don't hate me, I hate who I am. I hate that I won't let myself become someone I can love. I LOVE MYSELF! The NF journey is SO important because of these moments. These lines where he just says exactly what you're feeling but are too afraid to say. When you listen to these songs, it's there, right in front of you, and you have to confront it. And when you're staring at something as ugly as hatred, you can't help, but fight for every ounce of life you have left. I love this song.

I view the final verse & chorus music switch to symbolize the momentary "inner peace" which is destroyed by the fast paced anxiety driven self hatred, which is why the beat is fast, to reflect the mental pace of that anxiety. At least that's how I view that element, and as always, love the musical insights you bring as it always adds another perspective to appreciate and study from. I understand what you mean with the slower beat, and on some levels I agree, however, given NF's lyrical style and content... I don't think it would have worked as well that way for what he was trying to achieve (the more frantic nature of mental health issues and their traumas), but just my personal opinion. Absolutely loved it wans was worth the wait, NF is one of the few artists where I care about *both* elements, the lyrics as well as the sound and how well they match/fit together. As always, I'm looking forward to the next one :D (though I should go back and see if you posted any that I had previously missed, cheers!) edit: Uhh, turns out I apparently missed quite a few 😅💀😅, off to catch up now lol.

Like in NF STORY structure... 'Woke up in a bad place.. Should probably get up so I'm not late Stared at my phone for the past eight Minutes at nothing, my head aches.' (I don't see you like I should You look so misunderstood And I wish I could help But it's hard when I hate myself..) Then the verses are fast as if to say.. 'get on with the day in the fast lane to keep the mind busy' and then back to bed where... once again? self-doubt and over thinking creeps back in.... ''every mornin' I wake up and feel like I ain't my worth 'cause I'm at war with peace...'' (Too early to tell, but at this rate I'm thinkin' this might be a bad day..'') and in MANSION he says the 'room where he sleeps is full of regrets... ;)
