That throw was ridiculously good. He was on his heels moving the opposite direction and still got it 60 yards in the air where only the receiver could catch it.

I'm South African and when I'm watching football my default is to look for a pass! I'm wondering why they don't pass more when they can, wouldn't you gain more ground if you made good decisions?

@@danielshaw9979 Since you can shepherd the ball carrier, it is much more efficient to have your teammates run before you and carve a path. However, that is not to say there are no set pieces that involve a backwards (lateral) pass. One is called "the hook and lateral" where The receiver runs a hook pattern, catches the ball and laterals to a trailing teammate as soon as he makes contact with the defense. Another is called the "Flea Flicker" where the quarterback hands off to the halfback, who then turns around and passes back to the quarterback, and he throws it downfield. Another is the "Statue of Liberty" and it's variants, where the quarterback looks like he's dropping back to throw, and then passes back to a back running behind him. And think about this: every play of the ball starts with a backwards pass: the center passes the ball between his legs to the quarterback.

@John Smith okay that all makes sense, so what are the rules? From what I saw it's that you can only have I think 2 forward passes. But as a last resort could you literally just play like in rugby, gaining ground then lateral passing?

Could there be a more Raiders play than a backwards lateral longer than the original forward pass? I can imagine what Carr is thinking, "didn't I just get rid of this? How did it get all the way back here?"

Actually, thinking about it, it was a brilliant play. How do you erase a penalty? Retreat far enough to relinquish the first down so you fail to convert the 4th and short and they decline the penalty. Modern problems require modern solutions.
