Not to mention they're fading out the FullBack position... it's a shame, love to see the bulky guys make awesome plays, blocking, running, or catching. It was abused like... I dunno, a red-headed step child(?) back when Jerome Bettis played... but now, it's a glorified position that Defensive Tackles and burly Tight Ends play just to make a block...
@jaredbarhorst248
@jaredbarhorst248 3 года назад
I played fullback for 3 years and 3 as a running back. Obviously I got more touches playing running back but man fullback was fun. Nothing like setting the tone and delivering some hate to defenders. If they ever tried to tackle or block me I made it a point to hit them harder than they hit me. It is devastating to a defender to get their asses hammered all game.
@jaredbarhorst248

@@MLPIceberg honest question, do you think Jerome Bettis has a job in today’s NFL? I want to say he would just bc he was so good and still had speed. But I definitely wonder sometimes

Sadly that's true (Seahawks fan). But the reason is that he is a 1980s style fullback from an era where FB and HB were basically the same, would line up together and FB would often take handoffs. Today they're just smallish offensive linemen. That's not Juice's style. He's really a tight end who lines up in the backfield. He shares a jersey # with another 49ers fullback, Tom Rathman. Used in very similar ways as a hybrid halfback / tight-end.

Riggins is in the Hall for a good reason. He changed defenses' whole game plan. Yes, he had one of the all-time great offensive lines during part of his career. But he was part of that line in a real way, as a killer blocker in his own right. You could make this whole video on his blocks. And he was fast, really fast, both in his first step and his stride. That famous Super Bowl play, when he ran away from the Dolphins for a touchdown on 4th-and-1, was at the end of his career, but even Riggins having lost a step to age was faster than their safeties! When the defense has to worry about a fullback blocking, catching, running downhill with the ball and even running away from the secondary, you suddenly open up a lot of options for the other parts of the offense. Riggins rarely had a top-tier threat with him in the backfield (some would say, never did) and yet the running game was feared, and he made average backs look like running stars and he gave Joe Theismann--a player I loved, but not a Hall of Famer--lots of time to make the throws that got them to consecutive Super Bowls. With the changes to the game, we probably won't see Riggins's like again. It was a privilege to have seen him back in the day.

Lorenzo Neal, one of the greatest blocking fullbacks of all time (cleared paths for Eddie George, Corey Dillon, and LaDanian Tomlinson), made an awesome play near the end of a game i attended in SD back in 2006 (the year LT broke the single season touchdown record). End of the 4th and the Chargers were just kinda runnin the clock out as they'd kicked the shit out of the Arizona Cardinals that day. Neal gets the ball on a 3rd and short and has an open field. He must have ran 40 yards, possibly the longest carry of his career, but the best part was the end of the play: as some poor corner back chased him down and was going to push him out of bounds, Neal chose to lower his shoulder and fucking truck the guy as he went out. So badass. Love to see an unsung hero get their chance to show off a little bit.
