The ball can be out as long as the player is in. The player must also have control, so if the ball is still moving or is juggled it may not be a catch. Also you will see a kind of puff come up when the feet are dragged. The artificial turfs are made of recycled tires and the little rubber pellets come up like that when something drags across the ground. That helps sometimes to tell if a player did drag the toes. Also if a player is falling or diving he must maintain control all the way to the ground to be a good catch. A great many of these plays get challenged and go to replay.

That hit was legal. He was trying to jar the ball out or keep the receiver from getting both feet down. They position of the ball relative to the sideline doesn’t matter for it to be a catch. The receiver must remain in control of the ball while going to the ground, if he loses the ball when he hits the ground it is incomplete.

The commentators say "catch" or "out of bounds" based on what the sideline refs say. So when we see it in slow motion, it's always a replay. The ones where they say "out of bounds" in this vid are overturned calls. And yeah if you have the ball, are deemed to be in the field of play, you can get hit. 100% legal.

@@tom_shredz Well actually it used to be true until they changed the rules, so you're right that it no longer applies. "Now this rule has been changed so that the pass will not be considered complete unless the receiver gets two feet in-bounds, and the defender can simply shove the receiver out of bounds. This rule is going to cause some significant changes to the way teams approach their offense, particularly in the end-zone."

One thing coaches teach receivers is to drag their toes. This mainly helps when referees review the play. It also helps because when they drag their toes, it kicks up dirt or field turf so it’s easier to spot they they were in bounds when they made the catch. Good example of this at 2:55

I think one of the things that makes the sport exciting is that even though there's an ultimate objective (score, preferably a touchdown in this sport), there are the mini-objectives along the way, i.e., getting 10 yards for a new set of downs.

Other than having two points of the body inbound, total control of the ball has to be maintained through the fall to be a completed catch. So if the ball moves ever so slightly when the player slams into the ground, it's deemed incomplete

Just because a pass is initially declared "out of bounds" by the referee, or by the commentators.... that doesn't mean anything. When a player catches the ball, plants two feet on the field but then goes out of bounds, that play STOPS the play clock, but it still counts for yardage gained. If he catches it in bounds the play clock does not stop. Trying to get your man out of bounds on a fair catch is a tool that teams use when the game is tight and there is little time left on the clock and the team has no more time outs to use. By getting your man to fair catch and go out of bounds basically gets you another "free" time out and hence more time to talk strategy and get the ball either into field goal range or a touchdown to win.

@14:50 as long as the ball is in the air the ball is in play. For a player to make a catch they must be able to make a football move or maintain possession all the way to the ground and stand up with the ball, once it touches their hands or is held onto the body.
@BrucePatnaude
@BrucePatnaude 2 года назад
NFL rule is that you must have definite possession and 2 feet in bounds before it is ruled a catch. If the ball shifts in their grip or if it looks like they bobbled it after going out of bounds, it is ruled an incomplete pass. They even go so far to say that if you lose possession after hitting the ground while making the catch, it is incomplete.

The hit at @3:47 was by one of the greatest safeties in NFL history, Troy Polamalu who was known for his savage hits. The game in question was the October 25th 2009. This hit was legal, then! But in 2011 a new rule was brought in outlining was is now termed a 'defenseless receiver' which is defined as, 'a receiver who has completed a catch is a "defenseless player" but has not had time to protect himself or clearly become a runner.' In this case the hit would have been borderline as it may have been judged as a) being delivered with the crown of the helmet or b) delivered to the head or neck area of the of a defenseless receiver. These rules have been getting changed over the last 10-20 years in response to numerous concussion based lawsuits against the NFL!

The big things are 2 points of contact inbounds and controlling the ball. So the ball can’t move in the hands or any kind of bobble. In older games and in college it is one foot but also there used to be a rule where if a defender pushed a player out of bounds before they were able to get a foot down they would still get the catch

It's about possession even if the ball is out of bounds as long as their feet are in the field of play and they touch it then it counts as a reception. The one thing they don't talk about is you have to maintain possession of the ball when you fall down. If the receiver loses possession and the ball touches the ground whether it's in the field of play or not then it's not going to be a catch. The receiver must remain in possession and control the ball for it to be a reception. The same thing happened is somebody intercepts the ball in the defense in the end zone or on the sideline.
@tayk4784

@jerzeyguy71

For the out of bounds line, your body has to touch in bounds, I think they say two body parts, which if you are making a catch is almost always the feet, but sometimes its a knee. but also you must show you have control of the ball as you go to the ground, so if you drop it hitting the ground not a catch.

Dave is right, there are constant debates about what constitutes a catch. Two feet in is only one aspect. The ball also has to be secured - can't be moving or it's not a catch, even if the feet were in. There's a grey area regarding this and exactly how long the receiver has to have control before going down or having the ball knocked loose. There are rules, but also human judgements involved.

The catch debate is probably one of the biggest arguments in football. The nfl has updated the rules so much to try and clarify it but it’s still argued. Thea stalling out of bounds catches ar wa bit more cut and dry. 2 feet down and the receiver has to maintain possession through his fall to the ground. 1 hand or 2 hands, or up against the body, they watch to see if the ball moves as they hit the ground.

The receiver has to have full control of the ball for it to be a catch. In other words, the ball can not be wobbling around in their hands when they hit the ground. For example, it may look like a catch but when you see it in slow motion you will sometimes see the ball is moving around in their hands and bouncing off their chest as they hit the ground. That is considered an incomplete pass.

I would say only some of the most elite NBA players surpass the body control of NFL receivers. What makes these kinds of catches so impressive is just how big, strong, and fast these guys are. NFL receivers have the footwork and body control of a world class gymnast but are brutally strong/tough and among the fastest athletes in US sports. I think all of the athletes in professional sports are freaks, but NFL receivers are freaks among the freaks.

Yes, there is a rule. When both feet touch down, you have to have "possession" of the ball at that time. You can't bobble the ball, let it move, etc. The location of the ball in regard to field is irrelevant. DeAndre Hopkins is a sideline, toe-tap master. First with the Texans, now with the Cardinals. 1. The one that you thought was an illegal hit on the receiver, COULD be ruled illegal, if the referee decides that the receiver was blindsided and couldn't brace for the hit, because he was facing the other direction. On the flip side, a ref could also rule that the act of the tiptoe catch requires the player to lock his body to make sure his toes land in bounds, and so would never reasonably be able to "brace" for the hit, even if he saw it coming. It's a tricky play to call, the NFL has cracked down hard on "defenseless" hits over the last decade, and the rules seem to be getting tighter with every year. So I could see the play going either way, and the ref could justify it. The only thing that trumps all this is if there's helmet-to-helmet contact, or a hit deemed to high on the torso, though that second one is usually called on chest hits. 2. The only place where the ball crossing the line ("plane") matters is the goal line. For everything else, a catch is defined by "having the ball securely in possession, throughout the entirety of the catch." So if the toes are in, but the receiver bobbles the ball for a second and his feet drift out of bounds after the toe-touch before he's officially "secured" the ball, it will be ruled incomplete. There used to be a rule that if the player bobbled the ball, lands out of bounds, but ultimately catches it without the ball ever touching the ground, it was a catch. That rule went away. Now the ball MUST be secured by the time any part of the player touches anything or does anything that blows the play dead, otherwise they'll rule it incomplete. This includes when the players lands on the ground. If landing causes the ball to jar loose in his grip, the ref could deem that the player was not in complete possession, and rule it incomplete. This rule has become very tight and strict, there's almost no wiggle room to argue a call, other than "the ref didn't see it right." So coaches can throw a challenge flag and send the ref to the camera to check it out, but they're only double checking the rule in the video. It has to be an obvious missed call for them to overrule the call on the field. 3. There used to be an NFL rule that a defender couldn't "force" a receiver out of bounds, meaning if the receiver is in bounds, he jumps straight up to catch the ball, and the defender pushes him out of bounds while airborne, the play is ruled a catch, because the receiver can't control his body in the air, and WOULD have landed in bounds if not forced out. They changed that rule several years ago, so players HAVE to secure the ball AND touch down in bounds, even if a player pushes them. ANY sign of the ball even APPEARING loose in the hands will be ruled incomplete. 4. Which brings up another rule you might see: the player catches the ball, but the ball hits the ground while in his hands. Is it a catch? It used to be if the ball touches the ground at all, the ground helped the receiver catch it, so it's incomplete. But nowadays, the rules allow the ball to touch the ground, if the ref can see in video that the receiver had the ball secured before it hit the ground, and the ground had no impact on the catch. So in this case, the receiver HAS to secure the ball first - convincingly - for the ground not to negate the catch. This rule I think was amended to account for the availability to see close, tight, high definition replays, so the ref can actually see what happened. The original rule was because the ref had no way to know for sure, and it was a split-second decision. So they generalized the rule that any ground contact by the ball during the catch must have helped the receiver to catch it.

Ok I take back what I said about missing Dave. Edit: the body control and acute proprioception needed to do this is amazing to me. The level of concentration is unreal. I think you need to have control of the ball to the ground to be deemed a catch. It can be juggled up until the point you hit the turf essentially. Getting both feet in whether it’s a stick or drag is a different issue. You can get your feet in but not have control of the ball and thus not have a legit catch

Yeah as long as you have two feet, or even just a toe from each foot inbound and you catch the ball despite the ball being over the boundary line, it's legal. But the ball can never touch the ground like if you use the ball in your hand to break your fall, it will be ruled out of bounds or incomplete pass even within the field of play. Your body is technically considered an extension of the football. In college however, you just need the one foot/toe unless they have changed that rule.

When going out of bounds, as long as they don’t juggle the ball when they catch it then it’s a catch. But if they don’t have the ball secured then it’s incomplete. But it’s literally thousands of a second in some cases. But the refs are fantastic at making these judgment calls. They barely miss it. But if they do then the team can challenge the ruling On the field. Also. The ball can be over the out of bounds but as long as the receiver is tall enough to catch the ball with 2 feet in bounds then it’s a legal catch.

that hit by Polamalu would have be fine he still was in bounds when he was hit and he didnt hit him in a such a way that it would have been called

These were all catches when the announcers are saying they're out of bounds they are reacting in real time. They were all reviewed after the play

That hit could be argued that it’s illegal because there a rule called hitting a defenseless player but that’s only called when it’s super blatant
