I still remember the browns ravens one. The kick bounced back onto the field and the officials said it was no good. I turned the TV off after that and did something else. It was only after checking the box score later that I learned that the ravens lost that game in overtime. I remember thinking, wait what? I understand that some ravens players were in the dressing room and taking showers when the officials came and got them to play overtime. Of course the browns looked like they were on the verge of being good then. Who would have guessed the different trajectories those two franchises would take after that game.
Note that the ref said "After discussion on the field." At that time, that sort of play wasn't reviewable by replay. I'm pretty sure it is now. (I also bet that while they were "discussing" it, at least one of them looked up at the scoreboard replay and saw the truth...)
@@IlGreven hence the Phil Dawson rule after the season. Actually according to the ref one of the judges thought it was good and the other one though it wasn't what threw them off was that fact that it bounce back on to the end zone. It was the right call in the end.
So if these teams had 1 player at the goal post who could jump and get a hand over 10 feet up they could technically block a field goal attempt at the crossbar?
Yeah. I remember there was an ex basketball player who made it to the NFL. He used to do a "slam dunk" when he scored a TD. So yeah if you have a tall & agile enough player that can block a FG attempt at the crossbar.
I assumed that some would upload these instances due to it recently happening! Wait, are you a Browns fan? Dude, my sincerest condolences. That field goal block return by the Ravens was the cherry on top of your team's shit salad. However, once they win a Super Bowl it'll make those tough years so much sweeter. =)
What would the ruling on the field be if the ball gets stuck in the corner of the crossbar somehow? Or hits the crossbar and bounces back far enough that the kicking team catches it before it hits the ground? Is the play still active and not ruled dead?
I don't think it's possible for the ball to stick in the corner, but if it did I'm pretty sure it's no good, because it never went all the way through. In the second case, which has happened many times, it's simply a touchback. Any thrown or kicked ball that hits the goalpost and rebounds onto the field of play is dead; a thrown ball would be an incomplete pass, a kicked ball would either be a no good FG or a touchback on a kickoff or punt, regardless if the ball is caught on the fly by either team.
muchacho sauce same bro, when it happened, instagram was full of clips showing odeLL coming and hitting Davis from behind leading with his helmet. Now I can't find those, it's like they were all deleted cuz NFL doesn't want their golden boy to look bad
On the Akers FG, Cobb tried to swat it away. Had he done so, that would have been a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, goaltending, and, as a "palpably unfair" act, the referee would likely have awarded the 49ers 3 points.
