NFL Quarterback Club is an American football game series which had 4 entries on the Nintendo 64 which include 98, 99, 2000 and 2001. #quarterback #n64 #madden
Yeah you know it’s kinda funny that n64 was last console they were in the power race. When the GameCube came out although I got one on launch day I was quickly also getting an Xbox when I saw just how much better many games looked and ran
QB Club 98 was the only NFL game I had for awhile on N64. Its graphics were spectacular for the time! The only other N64 NFL game I ended up with was Blitz 2001. That game is great over the top arcade fun!
I have great memories of playing this during winter as a kid, setting the weather to snow and doing fake punts on first down to piss off my dad. Comfy.
I got NFL QB club 99 when it came out. It was a really solid game. The ability to create a custom team with custom logos was pretty advanced for the time. The graphics were also really solid at the time.
I'm from Mexico. My dad had to go work to the States for a couple of weeks, and he came back with 3 games for my N64: Battletanx, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, and NFL Quarterback 2000. I loved and played the heck out of those 3 games, I wasn't aware the third one was that bad 😂
@@n64glennplant I know, that's why I find it funny, and I've experienced that with other franchises over the time. Amazing reviews, by the way, been following you since 2016 I think, love reliving my childhood here
4 reviews for the price of 1!! I thought the QB Club series started out super strong. Ran circles around the first Madden entry or two. But I when it comes to the NFL games that came out near the end of the system's lifespan, I find myself reaching for Maddens instead. We were lucky to have two super solid football simulation series on the system regardless, before Madden completely snuffed out the competition in the years after lol.
just finished the video... nice to hear you echo the same sentiment about madden passing up qb club around 2000. forgot about the catch button in the later qb club games. played it with some friends and they were just infuriated by that concept hahaha
ah yes, these games do a great job of holding down the back part of the collection shelf. absolutely 5 stars in terms of their ability to stay put and keep the soccer games company
I enjoyed the obscure feeling of the later ones on the Gamecube. The music was good. But it was unique be it loved or hated. The Quarterback challenge was interesting even if not the best. Lol. I still go back to it.
So… living in Green Bay as a kid, and with Favre being on the label, 2000 was a no-brainer back then. I vividly recall not being able to sort through the catch mechanic. All I could do was running plays, and that was probably the reason I became so fond of the running back position and players as a kid. Go Pack Go!
You are a financial advisor by trade right? and weren't you like an ethical hacker at one point? lol I remember cobbling this info through your older videos... what are you up to these days? Blessings to you and your fam :)@@n64glennplant
You & SNESDrunk are two of my favourite RU-vidrs, I wish there were more console specific channels becsuse you get the type of insight more generalist channels don't offer
QB Club 98 is the only football game I've ever purchased. I guess I was swayed by the incredible screenshots. Or maybe just the lack of content on N64.
at 0:56 Colts QB Jim Harbaugh appears to have no weight, but does have a "WEIGTH" of 215lbs. Seems they got the spelling of "weight" correct for all the other players....how odd
I've never been interested NFL, but i strongly recommend to boot these games just to admire what N64 really can do. These games have over 10,000 polygons per a frame with very good character animations. This series peaked on 99 -version though, that is understandable, as new consoles were coming pretty soon. So many of the most talented developers started looking & studing into development for those instead, rather than N64.
We had the first N64 QB club and it was enjoyable enough from what I remember but I wasn't really that big into sports games at the time putting most of my energy into the platformers and action games of the era.
On qb club 99, the most interesting roster inclusions are of course Ryan Leaf, but also lesser known sports criminal Lawrence Phillips is on an NFL Europe roster (dragons I believe)
I emailed the gentlemen at Bitmap Bureau, the team responsible for Xeno Crisis and all its retro ports. I had asked them if they had any other projects in the pipeline and this was the response I got - "Since Xeno Crisis we've released two more titles (Battle Axe and Final Vendetta), both of which will be coming to various retro platforms in 2024. We're also hoping to start work on the Xeno Crisis sequel next year and have a couple of other big projects to announce, and more that we're about to start on, so it's going to be a busy and exciting year for us!" I'd been pretty much out of the gaming loop for over 2 years so I was unaware of the 2 games they released, Battle Axe and Final Vendetta. I watched the trailer for both yesterday, and they both look pretty fun. The fact that they are making it a priority to make games that can be ported to retro consoles is fantastic news for a guy like me who has WAY more fun playing N64 games than new games on the PS5. It's a weird time we live in when our beloved consoles, rendered obsolete by time and technology, have found new life in indie game developers who also have a love for retro gaming. Heck, the Atari 2600, released in 1977, is probably the console with more new games released in the past decade than any other retro system.
@@n64glennplant Speaking of there in the UK, there's a kid from London who has committed to my Oklahoma Sooners. His name is Daniel Akinkunmi. He seems a decent chap.
Thanks a lot Glenn! I'm from South America, i bought a few resaled American Football games, because these were cheap cartdriges. Which then turned into days after school trying to understand the rules and system of the game, without much success. 6:55 Regarding your video: I think those graphic needs came hand in hand with the different sizes and qualities of RCT televisions, in those days. Sometimes it was easier to understand the image and action with fewer polygons in the scene.
I got Madden 64 the first Xmas of the US launch and found it pretty competent. I was a little upset that it didn't have the NFL license, but at least it had the NFLPA license, which would have been a deal breaker. I tried NFL QBC 98 but felt it was super choppy and didn't regret sticking with Madden 64. I think I was also aware of the poor quality typical for Acclaim, including their 16 bit NFL QBC games, so I knew it wasn't wise to give them my money. In the 90s/00s, EA was a solid bet.
@@n64glennplantI have to agree with that, EA never swung for the fences or reinvented anything, which led to their relative irrelevance these days, at least to me. I liked a few Acclaim games like Turok and NBA Jam, but not too much else.
Looks like the Nintendo 64 gods have bestowed upon us yet another present, my friend! Brace yourself for a review that's as extravagant as Mario's mustache and as electrifying as Pikachu's thunderbolt. Get ready to indulge in some serious nostalgia and witness the magic of the Nintendo 64 unfold once again!
@@n64glennplant Oh boy, let me tell you, I've got this uncanny ability to get super pumped about things that most people might find a little boring or dull. One of those things was NFL Quarterback Club 98, a football game that really got me into the sport. You see, I was a huge fan of my Nintendo 64, and I ended up buying every single installment of this football series up until the Dreamcast NFL 2K1 came along and blew my mind. But then, things took a turn when Madden took over, and 2K Games got shut down. From then on, it was all about PlayStation 2 and Madden. But let me tell you, NFL Quarterback Club 98 will always hold a special place in my heart. The 3D graphics were like nothing I had ever seen before, just like the baseball game All-Star Baseball 98. I was absolutely floored by the way the shadows looked during night games. And those player models, man, they had this glossy, shiny sheen that was just so cool. It was like playing a game that was as close to the real sport as you could get. Good times, my friend. Good times.
I had a friend not too far away that seemed to have just about every sports game for the system, so I never felt the need to own any myself when I could just go to his house. I always preferred NFL Blitz, while he was insistent on the more realistic games. Occasionally I still like playing the older sports titles to see what players I can recognize if any.
quarterback challenge part of the game was always fun. CBS used to have a special during the summer, have like 4 to 8 Quarterbacks to complete in like 4 Challenges. Having that in the game was always good memories.
How did I almost miss this episode?! I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination. BUT I played the CRAP out of this game. So happy your back Glenn! Hope all is well my N64 friend!
N64 is niche, if you look at channel views I have millions but it’s a lot coming from Google where people maybe want to check a game etc. reviews are nearly wrapped up so I have a cool project on this channel I’ll be launching in the new year that mixes things up
@@n64glennplant I'm excited to hear that a new project is being spent. Coming from you, it will surely be quality. On the other hand, it makes me somewhat sad to know that the reviews are coming to an end. I'm going to miss receiving a notification about a new N64 review 💔
Always remember these games for the visuals. I remember seeing them in magazines(98) and thought the visuals looked amazing for a sports game. Man, Acclaim could put out some stunners back in the day. But I suppose this is just another dead sports franchise. Sad now just so few sports franchises exist. It's just FIFA(or whatever EA calls it nowadays) NBA 2K, Madden, MLB and I'm not even sure ISS is even still around(excluding racing and wrestling and more niche sports). Down from the dozens of franchises we used to get, from more sim stuff to arcadey. Even Nintendo had it's exclusive franchises. Ah well.
I loved the first two QB Clubs, better then Madden on the N64. Then 99 happened and ruined it, if I remember it had a load screen which was unheard of for a N64 game.
You need some serious skills to make me watch a sport title review. There are very VERY few youtubers whos videos i rewatch many times. Have seen your Turok 2 review maybe 10 times all together. I really like your voice and style, i always have ❤. Is there any chance you will revist older reviews ? I would love updated reviews of the Turok games and Body harvest. Best regards!❤
These games became really cheap soon after release here in Sweden. We don’t understand the game of american football and even less in videogame form. But I remember picking 99 up just because of the insane graphics and the customization. Did I ever learn how to play it? Nope. But it’s still in my Collection☺️
I just found 3 of these games at our local game store to hit 168 NTSC titles. I am excited to see how they stack up with your opinion! I'm not a huge sports fan but I'll admit, little football mini-games are cool.
I know 2000's edition was disastrous but 98 and 99 are really good, especially so early on in the consoles life. I prefer them to all 5 Maddens. I still play them today. Brings me right back to the good old days. You can pick up either game for just a couple bucks and they're definitely worth it.
I fell for NFL QB Club 98’s graphics and NFL license at first (Christmas ‘97) but Madden 64 (which I got 6 days later for my birthday on NYE) was a much better game. As a bonus playing it hundreds of times over the next few years taught me the rules of the NFL. I’ve been a big NFL fan ever since. Still annoyed that I could never find a copy of Madden NFL 99, with the precious NFL license, the following year in the UK though!
The most hilarious exploit I’ve ever seen in a video game: load up qb club 99 practice mode with second controller plugged in and no defense. Have the ball carrier go towards the sidelines and fumble intentionally- you can now interact with the players on the sideline If you touch them from behind they will get stuck in an animation and walk onto the field. If you hit them from the sides or behind they will hard sell every tiny hit but if you hit them from the front they will absolutely wreck your entire life. Definitely the hardest hits in the game. All the ai players act like the mentally deranged characters in Quake II
these games are what i kept to replace a screw or backing on my other games. like Sin and punishment not fitting in my console so i swapped out the backs. lol. i always played sports as a kid but i never really cared to watch on tv or play the games.
I really disagree with you on this series. I consider it an awful series of games. I felt sooo burned when I purchased '98 on N64... it was just sooo bad. Happy to hear you had fun with the series for a while, though.
I played a ton of QBC 96 on snes and really enjoyed the QB training aspect of it. I still play 98 pretty regularly and think it holds up well, but no denying that 2000 was complete trash.
Yeah qb club 99 was the best but still not very good. This was more of a visual.achievement focus clunky ai & gameplay madden & segs sports 2K was just sooo much bettetv
I never really thought about NFL games being played by Europeans. Did the college football games enjoy any success on that side of the pond? I've always been more of a NCAA fan - living in Norman, Oklahoma almost my entire life I was basically born into being an Oklahoma Sooners fan.
@@n64glennplant I figured as much. The NFL is really trying to get a foot in the door in the European market, playing games in the UK and Germany - and supposedly there is talk behind scenes of playing the Superbowl over there - in the distant future.
