NFL responds after Chiefs’ kicker Harrison Butker delivers controversial commencement speech 

A distinct difference should be acknowledged between sexism and religious opinions. Butker is receiving backlash because of his comments about women's rights and their roles in society. He is quoted as saying that their greatest joy should be being mothers and homemakers, not in workplace jobs. Nowhere in the Bible is it said that women should not or can not be part of the working community. In fact, so many conservative and working Christian and Catholic women that I know personally have rejected his speech for that comment as it disrespects the effort that they put in to be treated fairly in their workplaces because of sexist ideas like this. Yes, he has the right to free speech, and yes, this speech was given at a conservative university. However, this does not excuse the offensive ideas he communicated.

He's a conservative speaking at a conservative school, what did you expect?

He is a traditional Catholic man who was INVITED to speak at a traditional Catholic University full of other traditional Catholics. He said nothing which wasn't official Church teaching. The audience gave him a standing ovation at the end. These are affairs of the Catholic community, if you don't like it- it's simply none of your business.

We would much rather hear a speech from some of the NFL players who have assaulted or abused their spouses or partners, or have been charged with a sexual or other criminal act, and the NFL has no problem still keeping them on the payroll and paying them millions.

Once again, those preaching inclusivity and tolerance with no tolerance for someone speaking freely about being a man and leading his family.

This college Religious affiliation is catholic. Giving a commencement speech that is in line with their beliefs makes absolute sense. What does not make any sense is, what exactly are all the offended individuals doing at a Catholic College listening to their commencement speech. If you don’t like their beliefs then stay away. Catholics are entitled to express their values and beliefs as well as all other individuals especially in their domain.

This speech was inappropriate & disrespectful for a graduation. My mom is a SAHM & suffered bc of it. She told me to get a career so I wouldn't end up like her. That wasn't a lie, it's life advice I needed to hear.

I see no problem with what he said. It’s no one’s business what happen’s in a marriage.

I’m not sure why they feel the need to mention he got a standing ovation. Do you know who else got standing ovations at their rallies? Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin… you see where I’m going with this? Just because people get a standing ovation doesn’t mean that they were right and just in what they said.

He has a right to speak his mind. He was simply speaking to a group of like minded individuals about what he feels are issues in society. He got a standing ovation from the crowd, so it must have been what they believe as well. Remember that, he has a right to speak and his audience believes the same thing. I was wondering if this young man has any idea what life was like for women back “in the good old days”? Does he realize how many women had to get jobs and support themselves & their children when their husbands left them for someone younger, lost their job,became ill, or died. I don’t think women put their jobs first. By getting an education you will be able to provide a safety net for the family.

With that said, he was speaking to a conservative catholic college and they all hold those views. He is right! As a woman and mother, we were lied to! I know this firsthand! You cannot “have it all” and have quality of life. This is not an antiquated way of thinking, but a new way of thinking in that, we as women DID try to have it all and became increasingly more exhausted and depressed! Also, he was talking to Catholics at a Catholic University! As a Catholic, this is in alignment with our values. Imagine if he were a Muslim speaking at a Muslim college. It would not get the same attention. It is a prejudice that this country holds towards ALL Christians.

There was absolutely no need for him to mention them in the first place, and it was also incorrect for him to call being part of the pride community, a deadly sin, when its just a sin. I think it comes down to the devaluation of the traditional family unit. No one is advocating for barefoot illiterate pregnant teenage mothers in the kitchen, or opposing women doing what they want to do. It's the idea that the biggest source of pride in your day to day life should be your job, your level of professional achievement. While those are indeed healthy points of pride in ones self and contributes to a persons overall social and mental health as well as their income, how could having built a happy, healthy, and loving family that you get to enjoy everyday possibly be thought of as a lesser acomplishment than a professional achievment? Being a dedicated homemaker is not only hard work, but it's also the most important position in the world for each and every family. The idea that young women have been liberated from a position of domestic servitude (which is actual a position of near ultimate power and authority in a home) to only go on to work in an office is a laughable. Given the opportunity I would love to stay at home and invest my time and effort into my family. It would be a much more rewarding than devoting my precious little time on Earth for the benefit of my boss. I certainly don't feel free, I feel trapped by my career, there's other things I'd rather be doing. But this is only my point of view, if a young woman wants to pursue attainment in the professional world, then why does it seem like the arguement is presented as it has to be one or the other, why can't she have both? Why can't she have a job and start a family, either before, after, or even at the same time? Yes, one would suffer because of the other, but that's life, which is dealing with reality on reality's terms. That's why I continue working, but I always keep thing in perspective, at the end of the day it's just a job, but my family will always be home when I get there, and they are the reason I do what I do. They are the most important thing to me, and I don't see any reason why being a homemaker would be seen as a lesser accomplishment.
