There should be a designation for restored coins. Not cleaned, not details, but a restored category. Just my thoughts with these blast white coins…

I agree. How can a grading company reject some coins as cleaned or not original color and then do a “conservation “ without noting that on their holder.

Seems to me "conservation / restored" is a euphemism for "cleaned". Same diff!

They totally missed the heavy damage to the word “DOLLAR” in the 1917-D Walker. But it appears that Ben missed it too. That’s one deep scratch. 😮

@@808bAler If you watch the previous day’s video showing the 1917-D before it was cleaned, the scratch was missing the toning of the rest of the coin, making it appear to be “fresh” damage.

I’ve done conservation once with you and had a nice upgrade on a 1914s Barber Dime. Went from an ugly dark Ms64 to a beautiful blast white Ms64+ Cac. The coin went from being worth about $350 and a tough sell to a $800 easy to sell coin.

NGC conservation seems so much more effective than PCGS restoration (Yes, they are euphemisms). I've sent coins to both companies for these services and the PCGS submission come back looking just about exactly the same!

Lots of interesting results. I have an SLQ and a Seated Dollar I need send off for restoration. I've always been hesitant to do it but I'm going to bite the bullet and see what happens. Thanks for sharing!

I have acetone dipped quite a few silver coins but that is the extent of my restoration experience. I think acetone on silver is a pretty risk free process. Just cleans them up a bit.

Thanks. Overall plus results/a win. Hidden old cleanings on a lot of the nickles couldn't clearly be seen prior to conservation, and regardless of what the holder says I think they are now far more attractive and salable coins. A straight XF45+ grade or AU 50 for the 3 cent nickles in most cases if they were just in flips(?)

The 1873 proof was generous. I would have considered that cheek scratch significant enough to drop it to a Details grade.

Once had an Indian eagle with PVC haze go from 64 to 65 at PCGS. But most of the coins I’ve subbed for restoration have stayed the same grade.

Question: How is conservation not another form of cleaning? Isn't the removal of spots and whatnot cleaning, also? Shouldn't their be a "conserved" designation on the label?

Id like to know all of their processes for cleaning. Acetone and dip cant be everything.

Wouldn't make sense since the vast majority of coins (conserved by dealers or owners) aren't labelled.

Yes. They open up the material and send the ogp back if you so wish. All major TPGs do this.

That Trade dollar, while a scarce and valuable coin, doesn't jump much from 61 to 62. There's a bigger jump at 63, a huge jump at 64, and 65s are out of sight. The average Trade dollar in MS is a 60 or a 61. I have a 62+ from NGC, and in the end I chose not to pay another $800 to jump to an eye-appealing 63.

I'm impressed with NGC's conservation. I've seen several from PCGS and not the case at all. A bit disheartening there were a mere single Morgan but okay.😊 The conservation did a great job ! A home run for you on many. Overnight grading had to be costly 🫣😁
