In the first installment of Neo Geo Generation we cover Nam-1975, 1990 by SNK, the very first Neo Geo game to be given a production code. #neogeo #mvs #nam
Just beat this game. Had to switch to the MVS version in order to beat that final boss, wow that was frustrating, but finally got him. I'm in the process of beating every Neo-Geo game in chronological order, so thanks for this video series.
The earliest Neo Geo games had a feeling of melancholia and darkness over them, as did many pre-Neo Geo SNK games, a darkness that wouldn't vanish until they became known for fighing games.
Great review. You are a brave soul to review this game. It is so intimidating and the surprise boss fights are a nightmare. It's great that you referenced Full Metal Jacket. Yeah my AES copy has the sharpie markings.
Love these. Watching them in order. Never could get a Neo-Geo, or even see one, but it now I greatly enjoy these videos. I know they take a lot of work. Thank you for putting in the effort!
Damn; I've got to the start and there's none left unwatched. I imagine you guys are busy, but I'd love to see your thoughts on other game going forward, so many left :) I tend to regard Gallery Shooters as being more like Duck Hunt, where you have no protagonist to protect, just targets. I tend to lump these as simply "Cabal-likes'.
Oh boy, reviewing all Neo Geo games in order? That must be the most ambitious project on RU-vid! I'm only familiar with the most well-known SNK franchises like Metal Slug and King of Fighters, so I really hope to learn about some unknown gems. Nam-1975 looks definitely like something cool to pick up and play. Anyway, thanks for the review, really enjoyed it, especially the little injections of humor. :)
Thank you so much for your content. I just purchased a Razer Ripsaw capture card. We’re going to put out footage of retro games. I actually beat Nam 75 in a San Diego bowling alley on ¢25! My brother & I made it to the end but he got killed. Hopefully I’ll be able to duplicate my run. 🤞
I mostly remember this game as the one hardly anybody played and was often in the machine to fill space. As soon as they got a new game that isn't a sequel Nam 1975 was the first to be replaced 2nd only to Crossed Swords.
9:55 No and I know the story... I bought games from that seller!!! What happened (and I don't remember the exact year but it was around 2008) someone bought a warehouse in Saudi Arabia. It turned out it was full of Neo Geo games! The seller didn't care about the content but do understood that it had some value (it was not total garbage) but he/she was not into games or really needed the space quick... So listing on eBay appeared for lots of 10 Neo Geo games for $220. Not each, the entire lot. $220. I am not sure I remember all the games but it was Nam-1975, Magician Lord, Trash Rally, Ghost Pilot, Ninja Combat and 5 others I can't remember but all early games. The news was shared on Neo Geo forum and this listing didn't last a long time. Saudi Arabia had European version of the games and heavy censorship. Was is funny, is that they didn't bother putting the black marker on the cover but on the film, on the box. They did the manual too, where you can't undo it... What I discovered when I got the games, is that they came in the official SNK box (and I was sutpid and did not kept it). So it was 10 games per box. They just open the box, remove 9 games and added 9 games from different boxes...
I grew up in France. We see boobs in commercials, in the middle of the day.... It is changing now because of the religious influence but back in the days, any commercial for a body wash or shampoo in France would show a a naked girl in the shower. The camera would not show the v (for obvious reason) but boobs, no problem... And not blurred applied... Not even if the add was on screen at noon! I In France, or in Europe, you can also order a beer at Mc Donald... Censorship is way worse in the US generally speaking (Germany is a problem for violence and it depends if the game is for all Europe or some specific counties - This is why Contra became Probotector etc.).
@@gumdeo I laugh at religions with a passion. Men things are eternals. Yet. when someone dies, life carries on... At the opposite, the day our Sun will die, life on Earth will disapear in a fraction... But they think they can achieve what even stars can't lol! And let's not even mention mitochondria that destroys the myth of God from the Bible...
About the "stolen" shots, movies are full of shots, or lines, borrowed from other movies and TV shows. This is called culture, it's part of the fun of it, people use references all the time. See any Quantin Tarrantino movie, many Seinfeld Episodes, they have small portions where they borrow a few lines and camera angles from previous work. However, if they had simply digitized the images and put them it that would be something completely different. Otherwise, it's amazing to have that kind of in depth videos for the Neo Geo!
Hey DJ, I was just finishing up watching your video of NAM-1975 on your channel and I was going to post this on my Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com for you. But you got to me first with the rest of your Neo-Geo works. I got to say, its really informative and impressive to see this from you. If you like, you're welcome to upload them on my thread and your future work as as well. Here's my link if you like to browse around to see what the thread offers. atariage.com/forums/topic/223548-the-official-neo-geo-thread/page-375 Thank you again DJ. See you soon. Anthony..
"Almost disrespectful" is an understatement. I'd go with "exploitive and insulting" myself. This thing came out barely 15 years after the fall of Saigon, and unlike the 1987 Full Metal Jacket film it steals from it has nothing serious to say about the war. There were vets from Nam who weren't even 40 yet.
@@BasementBrothers I mean, it's been almost half a century now, and that's a very different thing, but fifteen years when this came out? Too soon, especially if you're going to crib from FMJ, which had its flaws but was at least serious about the subject.
@@richmcgee434 It's a game... You'd probably find a reason to be insulted regardless of what it was. My old man was there, and he wasn't insulted or offended by this game one single bit.
