So, "Denger Curve" is a typo, but not the one you think. It's not supposed to say "Danger", it's supposed to be "Degner", as in the Degner Curves at Suzuka International Racing Course in Japan which the track is clearly modeled after. Ernst Degner was an East German motorcycle racer who escaped to Japan with his family with the help of Suzuki in the 60s. At one of Suzuka's inaugural motorcycle races, he infamously fell while leading at turn 8. The corners were known as the Degner Curves thereafter. Love, love, love this Neo Geo series, by the way.
Story mode was fun actually. Though to be fair, I had to use save states to get good enough so I didn't lose any money. But once I got used to the jank it was pretty fun. The Japanese version has voice work for a few lines and nice clear kanji (which explains why the English letters were so large). The CD version has no audio. The Japanese version also shows the construction logo at the construction site. The checkpoint icon is actually a mix up on the translators side, since later in the game there is a police checkup at a dangerous area which the checkpoint icon is used for. Again, here the English translation uses the construction icon instead. The story starts of with you in your apartment... I too, randomly found out that pressing the C button shows your health and money status. You start of with 45,000 the exact amount to buy the first bike. Buy that and earn. As soon as you get enough money, upgrade only your tires which give you better traction, forget the others. Slowly work your way up the ranks of racers (with riskier and riskier bets). I found that if you get to really know the track you can beat the 2nd best racer. The other guy is just too fast for you. Now, you can slowly grind enough money to get THE best bike and it feels awesome after that slow as molasses first bike. Then you can breeze through the rest of the story. Alternatively, you could buy the green bike and upgrade the tires to be the same stats as the engine. This allows you to tackle corners perfectly without you slowly veering of to the side. With this I think it is possible to beat the best racer at S curve. But upgrading the engine to the max allows you to be able to beat the entire game if you try really hard. Some tips are: - Mash the acceleration so that you're not at full speed but still pretty fast, this allows for easier cornering; - Hit the curves early to get a slight advantage; don't get close to bikes or scooters, they have a frustrating large hitbox, so you can't do what you see in MotoGP; - A bike standing up has a smaller hitbox compared to when it turns, I have no concrete evidence so I say just keep your distance; Weirdly enough, trucks and cars don't have a proper hit box, so you may get lucky and clip through them; - Always brake and slow down to prevent a crash, a crash always slows you down for 7 aggravating seconds or so; - Use the turbo at the last stretch of the road to overtake or keep the lead on the opponents with bikes slightly stronger than yours. The 2nd best bike should give you an easier time but definitely grinding for that final bike gives quite the exhilarating reward. Bike racing only gives you dough, it doesn't progress the story. Each race will deplete your energy meter. I haven't noticed anything happen if you run out of energy, perhaps you get slower. Sleep at your apartment to recover, which I did anyways. If you crash during the race, it might result in damage, which is depicted by the energy bar turning from blue to orange. In each subsequent race, your top speed is decreased untill you go to the hospital. The story mode is simple. After meeting Susie, let some time pass and meet up with her uncle to tune up your bike. After that it's just a matter of going through the map exploring, but for the most part you just keep going to the burger shop for the latest gossip, which tells you where to go. I had fun, but wish they did more with the game.

I think I should be impressed that they've managed to pull off a pseudo-3D racer on a system without a proper BG layer, but this looks primitive as hell, the road is too narrow and there's barely any hills... Needless to say, it doesn't hold a candle to the pseudo-3D racers you can find on the other 16 bit systems like the SNES, the Mega Drive and the PC engine, which is kind of pitiful considering how much more powerful the Neo Geo is...
Story Mode could've been really cool if they had better writing, added some slice-of-life elements like balancing school and part-time job with racing, goals like making it to the GPX, rivals, and maybe some eligible bachelorettes ;)

It seems like a pretty literal translation from the Japanese, though there are grammar mistakes and they didn't have much space for text. Someone was trying to build a world and characters for this game, and it all ends up coming off kind of half-baked and awkward. That's part of the fun.
Why do they have to explain the rules for each race? "You have to go faster than everyone else and get to the finish line before everyone else." Wow, I'm glad they explained that! 4:49 "Come along. You belong. Feel the fizz..." 10:58 "Steal money from the church collection plate!"
Generally in the case of Neo Geo, bad translation is usually a safe bet, although this one seems more encumbered by some bad spelling, poorly constructed sentences, and a lack of space. It goes without saying that the Japanese is less awkward.
It's a flawed game but it shows what might have been. If they had widened the road to x 2, and made game a bit more balanced, and perhaps tweaked the dialogue and interface, it could have been the start of a nice genre on the Neo.
Terrible game, but a terribly excellent pitch for an even more excellent memory card. I got one early on when I got my cabinet a little over a year ago and it's a true life saver.

The dialogue has so many classic lines! Sounds like he's playfully flirting, but the intention was probably meant to comment on how green the player character is as a rider. It depends how you read it.

This game is probably the third worst game on the hardware. But I'd still probably buy it for the Switch on the eShop eventually, but only because I am curious to see what the outcome in story mode will be, not because I expect to have fun by spending more time with it.

@@BasementBrothers Well so far, so good. I've beaten Diamond Dave and I've finished the first circuit race in the #1 spot. I've used World of Longplays's long play of it as a bit of a guide since there is no walkthrough anywhere, but they used cheats in that longplay so I had to compromise a bit. But yeah, so far, so good...
I think this is one of the worst games on the Neo-Geo. Weak graphics, boring RPG elements, the worst Engrish on the system (and that’s saying A LOT!), and according to the Neo-Geo Development Wiki, it says that if you use a Non-SNK memory card, it will IN FACT damage all your other saved data! I think ADK’s Thrash Rally is a much better game (in fact, the Game Lord Chad Okada said that SNK of America played this game all the time while listening to Rush Limbaugh.)
