Never forget first moment when i saw this as 7 years old kid. I almost got foam at the mouth how i was amazed by this....And after years it still one of the badass intros. Its nice picture of late 90s or early 00s. Not only intro...thoste time were badass
I know it is weird, but this intro gives me the goosebumps (in a good way). The music works well with the video and the team that created this put in a lot of time and effort. Thanks for posting!
Oh man I remember playing this nonstop... one of my favorite parts was the play-by-play guy if you pulled your goalie when you had a lead or in the beginning of the game saying "The goalie leaves the net... I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!"
NHL 97 of EA Sports was the first in 3D version. The First verison with the Colorado Avalanche and the Phoenix Coyotes. I have played so many games on NHL 97. A classic! I love the intro.
Every now and then I come back to watch this. My pc could barely handle the awesomeness of this game at the time lol this intro barely ran on my pc but when I finally upgraded and saw it .... Hot damn 🔥
This game was the last one exclusively made for PC, after this the frontend and graphics were all ported from consoles. The inferface become controller based, and made editing lines and generally organizing the game a hassle, there was no more drag and drop and easy use of keyboard and hotkeys, so this change slowed down doing anything besides playing an actual game by at least 75%. One of the enjoyable things about sports games is customizing your team and creating a player, and editing lineups to match the other team's each game. But after 97 it just took too long to do these things and so players ceased to care very much about these details, and that resulted in taking a lot of depth out of the game. The in-house music you hear here also began to be killed off in 98, gradually replacing it with pop music into 2000, further cheap-ifying the game. A lot of people love 2004 in terms of gameplay balance, but that aside, the NHL series on PC was mostly downhill from here.
Sorry mate, but NHL 97 had 3D versions for DOS, Windows (on the same disc), PlayStation and the SEGA Saturn, while 2D versions were made for the NES and Genesis/Mega Drive.
I dunno about the game "sucking"... 96 was better in terms of gameplay, but 97 certainly opened up the game a bit to allow more goals to be scored on rebounds, and the offensive speed burst by double-tapping the directions also ended up allowing a puckhandler to bowl over a defender at times, which was always quite satisfying, especially with the painful sound of the hits in this game.
Does the NHL have a policy to protect fans against counterfeit merchandise and unlicense video games of the NHL? Also, how much did EA Sports pay to get the rights to use the players' names, stats, etc from NHLPA?
