That was my go to back in the day, but Mitch Korn also made me learn to shoot wrong handed, hence the straight stick I used in the NHL to be able to shoot forehand equally well both ways...

Love the section about nerves. For me I get butterflies up to 3 times a season. First game, first playoff game, and championship game if I make it. For me the butterflies always go away after I face that first real shot of the game, because that’s when I know how well I’m tracking the puck that day.

Hello, I made a comment on your last video about my first game as a goalkeeper. Tonight I had my first league game... Due to current events we weren't able to practice for the past two weeks while the team we were up against could (were in a different state). The game was an 8-0 loss. My team shot 7 times and I was shot at 40 times (.800 save percentage!). For me this game was a huge success even though it was a loss. Watching your videos has been a huge help in improving my skills.

Great video with two great points. First, nerves. This was my nemesis in the early days. I did not start playing ice hockey until i was 24. After a few years of pickup I joined a work team in a beer league. Was always nervous before the game being new to it and especially skating out looking up at the restaurant windows that over look the pad and see everyone watching made it worse. But as soon as the game started, I typically settled down once I got too busy to think about anything else. Good point on getting up to temperature as well. Very little time and most guys don't warm up goalies well. They come in and either blast one to the top corner or deke you out of your underwear. I play 3 on 3 pickup now which is great. I get to the rink early, get dressed to warm the equipment up, stretch and try to get moving as soon as we hit the ice. There's usually not much time to take warm up shots but in 3 on 3, getting up to the temperature is not a problem :).

Like Russel Wilson says, " the separation is in the preparation". I have found no better words for almost every aspect of life. I don't play goal but I make it a point to be warmed up, stretched out and focused on before half the team is there. And I think my team sees that as a keystone of their mindset.

100% agree with nerves. I play my best when I'm nervous as hell. My two shutouts came against the best team's in that league and I didn't even notice until the final buzzer sounded... Focus on the next puck, the next play... I would know that white helmet has good hands but can't elevate the puck but number 3 could snipe (from previous games and stick n puck) so when game time came I was only focused on what i could do to stop them while keeping my motions basic and not doing extra movements to allow a garbage goal... when you're nervous you don't really have time to focus on anything that doesn't matter

I love this video and the movement drill (which I will use to warm up once we are allowed back on the ice). Must be the best feeling to get on the ice with your son. Biggest thrill would be for my daughter to follow in my footsteps and play goalie. Love that they're both full right goalies and their masks are the reverse of each other (if I saw correctly). Great advice too. I always do a 20 minute warmup/stretch at home before driving to the arena and then a 5 minute warmup/stretch on the ice at the arena before getting beaned with shots. Welcome back Steve

I wish I had my own Mini-Me! That's awesome. I'm a Vaughn goalie too. I'm from Detroit and met Mike a couple times. Once I showed him a mod I had made by my then girlfriend who was a seamstress. She added a loop on the belly of the chest pad, so I can loop the belt from the pants thru it. I recommended this to him, but he said that no one uses the loop. @FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 3 года назад
Two likely culprits: 1) if you are set with no backwards flow on this you will get torched and 2) if you cant use a fake or real poke check from time to time they will bring it in really close and then you have no chance. By playing these mini breakaways with backwards flow and the odd poke/fake you will have much better success.

@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 3 года назад
Not in my experience. to get to the NHL we are willing to listen to anyone or anything that may help us win more games or stop more pucks. It is more the NHL Head coaches like Paul Maurice who don't believe in the goalie coaching stuff...I had to fight him tooth and nail to permit a group video on what works and what doesn't on shootout attempts... and we missed the playoffs that year with a shitty shoot out record. He believed goalscorers didn't need to no anything about goalies and their tendencies, and just wanted them to rely on instinct only...
@blainebennett
@blainebennett 3 года назад
@@FutureProGoaltending the more time a person spends studying shootout strategies, I think the more you realize it's almost a completely different sport. Not at all the same dynamic for the player or the goalie compared to in game shots on goal. No breakaway during the game is taken at half speed, dipsy doodling. I hope for the Jets sake Maurice has become wiser with age.

If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS.. I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid. Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...
