They had terrible goaltending for more than a month, played with low effort against non playoff teams and established a 100 year record winning rate this season. Translation: when this team brings their A game they are better than their record showed. And you can’t compare this team to last year with Tavares and Muzzin injuries. If this game’s spanking of the TBL was just a “random surprise” for you, enjoy your salt this season because Leafs are going to smash TBL. I watched the six game series against Florida and TBL and Toronto is a far better team defensively compared to that Florida team and have as good an offense as anyone in the NHL. Watch this highlight pack and look for the TBL chances. How many? How many PP minutes this game did they have? Toronto was on the attack more than them while shorthanded. If you think this is a “one off” you’ll be in for a shock.

He isn't always this good, to be fair. He was very good tonight. So was Kerfoot, who played one of his best games ever, I think. Kampf's goal was perhaps the turning point. He was so solid defensively, as well. But, as Keefe said, the first star of the game was the fans.
The Leafs were f'ing unbelievable! The best I have ever seen this roster play. Marner, Kerfoot, Matthews, Campbell, Brodie and everyone showed up and put in a solid 60. Completely embarassed the Lightning and got them off their game frankly - something other teams struggled with. It was so important to win the first one. Unbelievable! Been waiting for this kind of work ethic and skill for decades.
Loved the physicality, leafs didn’t shy away and hammered some guys pretty good. The whole team played outstanding. You gotta bring it all to beat these guys

What a statement win by the Leafs. Just the start of the series but that is a massive win for the Leafs. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Tampa bounces back next game. Should be a good 6-7 game series.
Tampa will make the necessary adjustments and just lose 3-0 in game 2. Tampa is a fantastic team but they are in trouble if Toronto exits the gates with the same intensity all series long
Yup my thoughts are the same. This was a HUGE opening night for the Leafs and I love it, but there is no way Tampa doesn’t bounce back and make the series interesting. Still think the Leafs can do it but it’ll be tough, but thats the playoffs too innit?
I havnt seen a more complete Playoff game since 93. It really doesn’t matter Who the opponent is, if Toronto plays physical and a hard 60 min this talented team will make you pay for admission. Way to bruise some egos

Leafs look like they want this more. They honestly deserve it more too. The leafs came out to play and play hard. They didn’t give us an inch to work with. Meanwhile the lightning look like the forgot they’re a Professional hockey team, and this is the Stanley cup playoffs. If both teams continue to play this way, I say leafs in 5. Congrats to Marner for breaking his streak, and hats off to Campbell with the shutout.
Leafs don’t deserve anything. If they end up winning the cup they set a garbage example for how to build a team. You can’t win w half your cap space locked into 4 guys. You know why the panthers are so good? Cause they spread their cap space over the whole team, so every player is at least good quality. Clifford is a clown for getting 5 and a game and the leafs caught vassy on an off night
It's only the 1st game, we need 3 more to get past Tampa. I understand everyone's excitement but we have a long way to go. These guys aren't the back-to-back champs for no reason - they know what it takes to win. Cooper is a great coach, a master motivator & a proven winner. Even if the Leafs are up 3 games to none, I can't relax until that 4th win is in the bag.

Tampa will have to wake up and go playoff mode, they played so bad and effortless it reminds me of the clean sweep from colombus 3 years ago. The leafs are a good team and they are hungry and forced many turnovers. Cant wait to see game 2.
Leafs are way faster than Tampa. Maroon and Perry are beyond slow. They would need the Gourde line now. Unless Kuch and Hedman heats up significantly Tampa will get nowhere. Stamkos isn't a playoff difference maker by himself and Point doesn't seem 100% healthy.

As a Bolts fan I gotta say we got our assess handed to us and deservedly so. I had a feeling Toronto was going to take this one but Wow. Toronto was solid in every aspect. They played perfectly as an entire unit. The bolts on the other hand looked utterly lost out there. Mad respect to the Leafs for that ass kicking.
I am completely indifferent to both teams, but the arrogance of all the people insisting the leafs couldn’t win based on their history made me happy to see this.
@@eriklakeland3857 exactly what I’m talking about. One great thing about hockey is how quickly teams evolve. Last year Montreal was a finalist and both Vegas and the islanders won two rounds. If playoff history tells us anything it’s to expect the unexpected.

Matthews and Marner showed up in full force getting 6 points(more than they had in 7 last year). If the time can keep this pace, I don’t think there’s a better team in the nhl. Also, allowing 5 goals in game one really plays on a goalies mind. And getting shutout really plays on the skaters minds. Tampa either comes back stronger or crumbles. Only time will tell! Still anyone’s series!

thought the Leafs looked a little bit stiff the first few minutes of the game... but after that it was near perfection! wow, great all round game by Toronto. it was so much fun I almost didnt want it to end but we'll take the W.
Great motivational effort by the Maple Leafs! The Leafs are going to do very well moving forward. I don't think anybody would have predicted a 5 - 0 blowout against one of the best teams In the league! Marner + Matthew's beautiful chemistry especially on the powerplay. They already have more points now than last years playoffs. Looking forward to game #2 this coming Wednesday!
I watch many different sports and find that hockey is the only one that does become a totally different game when the playoffs start. Watching the game I was asking myself "who are these guys!?".

I've been a Leafs fan all my life. And I've seen amazing team play, but I have never seen or thought what would a perfect game look like? This was a perfect game!! "Soup" turned into a wall, PP was excellent, penalty kill was awesome, a shorthanded goal, even strength goal, outpaced the toughest team in the NHL, jumped on turnovers, passing was fast and fluid! This team is simply amazing! Shanny, Dubas and Keefe have transformed this team into a fast powerhouse!
Imo this year is Toronto's best shot at getting the job done. Gotta keep the foot on the gas for the entire series especially against a team like Tampa but this is the start they needed.
Habs fan here. This is long overdue. TO has had a great team and the potential to go all the way for years now. They look hungry. If they get out of the first round it's their cup to lose. Make it happen boys.
This was probably the first time in a very very long time I’ve seen the leafs play a good game from start to finish, And also the crowd making noise from start to finish. Lots of hockey left, good game Tampa.

As a lighting fan, I give my respect for maple leafs team today. Toronto fans this evening was yours to enjoy. BUT don't forget we had 32 evenings like this in past 2 years.
Toronto knows this is far from over. We have to play this hard to beat Tampa. A team doesn't win the President's Trophy one year then wins the Cup the two following years by luck. Just because my Leafs hate me, they want my anxiety level through the roof by making this a seven game series
I think that’s the Lightnings problem. Very hard to repeat back to back cups and 3 in a row is even harder. Players get burned out. The Lightning look a bit burned out to me. Still a great team though. We’ll see if they have their legs back on Wednesday.

For the Hab's fans who continually feel the need to comment the majority of us Leaf fans understand the past failures, understand its just one game, you should also understand the majority of us got behind the Canadians last year as soon as the handshakes were over as hard as it was. Yes there is some excitement in the air tonight, thats all it is. You had a story book run to be proud of last year, this year was one to forget. Move on and we can pick this up again next year when the Hab's are the Hab's again.
Scotiabank Arena is like a library during the regular season. Sometimes I have to rewatch this just to remind myself what a REAL crowd atmosphere sounds like.

Damn. I wanted to see a good start and a game 1 W as that’s huge playing at home or away. That was impressive. They kept their foot on the gas pedal and dominated large parts of the game. Hopefully no suspensions come from the bs and they can keep battling. The Leafs have now planted the flag for this Stanley Cup Playoffs. Go Leafs Go!!
