I remember doing my senior year term paper on the history of the NHL. When I did a chapter on the history of the Original Six, my teacher was impressed on how six teams were the foundation of the league for 25 years. Years later, one of my cousin's friends played in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings. When I asked him what was like to play there, he told me that it was both a privilege and honor.
No matter what happens in the future the original six will forever be the NHL's foundation. As a Dallas Stars fan it was pretty awesome to know that the team I root for was one of the hated rivals of the Detroit Redwings back in the mid-90s to late 2000s.
I hate to break it to you but there's no such thing as the NHL original 6! It is a figment of your imagination. There is only one team that was an original NHL team that still exists today and that is the Montreal canadiens. Get it through your head there is no such thing as an NHL original 6. Stay with me, there is no such thing as an NHL original six.
@Ben exactly! My history is obscured just as the original six history is obscured! They're historians that do not even know when the Toronto Maple leafs were actually an original team. The word original means present from the beginning meaning what you're seeing right now was at the beginning when this all started. Were all six of these teams there when hockey was started? The answer is No! But we lied to our kids to protect them when we tell them Santa Claus is real and the tooth fairy is real but then we grow up!
Even though I am born and raised in Vancouver, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Habs fan. It's something that's been passed along the family line from my grandfather who so loved Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau. My late uncle Elvis had shrines to three people: Jesus, Bruce Lee, and Guy Lafleur. Before he passed away, he gave to me a Guy Lafleur hockey card, which I still have. And when I was a child, Saint Patrick was leading us to the Stanley Cup in 1993. When the Habs are in Vancouver, I go. It's like a family gathering. It's part of our D.N.A. I love the Canucks too, but Les Canadiens are sewn into the fabric of my being. 🔵⚪🔴
One significant feature of the "Original Six" was that each team had it's personality, it's stars, it's fans... No matter who played whom, viewers would see action or could vouch for someone. Growing up in the Northeast, hockey was part of our religion with the Montreal Canadiens "sitting at the right Hand of the Father". It was a great era to grow up in, to witness, to enjoy no matter how "naive" and/or innocent we were ... Thank you to all those players who entertained us, had a really hard life (poor pay), and endured grueling leadership... those were the days... back then, Ciao, L (QC, ME)
Actually, the Original 6 is truly misleading. If anything, there are only 2 that have been around since the founding of the NHL, Toronto & Montreal. That's it. The other 4 came into existence in the 1920s.
The NHL original 6 is similar to Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny! They are wonderful stories and it's something you want to teach your kids to keep them happy however you know in reality it doesn't exist. That is your original NHL 6! Thank you and have a great day.
