No surprise about Sprong. He's inconsistent from shift to shift and game to game. Plus he plays zero defense. Coaches don't trust him enough to give him more minutes.

There is no way Marner goes to Carolina. That giant contract is antithetical to their team philosophy. Nobody gets paid 10m+ in Carolina; for good or ill, and have much respect for them sticking to their way.

Watching Sprong all year in Detroit, I can tell you exactly why he can't get term. He's a great offensive that, but he's a black hole defensively. He was frequently scratched towards the end of the year.

leafs didn't lose the playoffs because of marner, they lost because of weak goaltending.

I disagree that the Leafs need to a "good" trade where they get somewhat equal value for Marner. If the Leafs get 2 firsts and a blue chip prospect from a team they are better off than getting nothing when Marner walks next year. The Leafs would take a step backwards this season but they have 2 firsts to improve the team at the deadline. They will also have a ton of cap space next summer .

Mitch is a top winger in the league no matter how u feel about him 50p in 57 playoff games is solid. Kills penalties but definitely can disappear at key moments. We will never get fair value for him so lets just sign him and use jt money next year for that big 2c move and hopefully thats the shakeup to the core 4 we need? I duno lol

If I recall, Dubas was fired like 1-2 weeks before Marners NMC kicked in. He had to be replaced and by then they couldnt shop him around properly

Great report ,as always----The Canes and Leafs both have some interesting players to consider in trade, I just don't know who would be best to go to Toronto. I really think the Blues could use Daniel Sprong in the middle six, he's got a good scoring touch and plays a tough game both ways IMHO. and they are looking at getting younger overall.

Tough one up in Toronto is both Marner and Tavares have a say if they are moved.

I think TOR missed their window to trade marner. Were through the first week of FA most teams are "set" top end wise and any place he might wanna waive for are going to be closer to the cap. A 10mil add to a team right now is going to take alot of pieces to move.

As I said, you have to factor in that Craig Berube has to get a look at The Core Four before a move is made. I'm sure, that, if he believes that The Core Four needs to be broken up, he will communicate it with GM Brad Treliving & things will happen. I think that the coaching change might make them do better in the season & after.

sprong is soft and gives no effort defensively. that's why he doesn't stick around. as for offer sheets, i'd consider throwing a 1x9 at quinton byfield. and i'm a habs fan.

It’s never going to be easy to figure out the Marner puzzle for the Leafs mainly because everyone’s opinions differ on the subject. Marner is loved and hated Those who love him are totally fine with the Leafs signing him to a contract (12-12.5), some bring up that Tavares will provide enough cap relief. Others think he should have been dealt when he still had 2 years left on his contract and had no trade protection until recently, there are many on the fence about it as well… I think we can all answer our own question. 55 of only 88 million allowable in cap space is invested into on only 5 human beings, Mathews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares and Reilly The team only has little money left over with these players to fill out a competetive playoff /deep roster, so it’s that’s the main reason why the calls of asset management are being called into question AND why the team may just be thinking “Dubas” along with Shanny put them in a bad spot, let them walk for free as UFA’s if are hands are tied,, both of’em

Drury and Necas for Marner would be good for TML, Drury quite good at face offs woul dmake a good 3rd lince center and Necas helps fill some of Marners role on 1st line with Matthews and Domi. For Broberg it is most likely under 4.29M which makes it only a 2nd round pick for compensation so pretty good chance some one will. Kakanpaa either plays or is LTIR , no biggy there.

Canucks should offer sheet Broberg. I'm sure the kid would rather be in Vancouver anyway, career-wise. Vancouver has enough Cap to do it too, if they put Poolman on LTIR.

Again with the narrative of you can’t move MM for nothing. Guess what? Yes you can and if you get an 8 mil dollar player let’s say? Guess what? You’ve still got 4.5 for another player🤷🏻‍♂️ MM is going to command 12/12.5 mil per and it’s ridiculous to say that losing him for nothing is atrocious asset management when the insanity of having him and losing every year in the first round except 1 is all you’ve accomplished. Get the 12/12.5 in cap space and balance out the roster and stop with worrying about getting market value. You’ve lost with him so at the very worst, you can lose without him but darn sakes, at least try a different approach 🤷🏻‍♂️

Finally, after too many years under an inexperienced, one trick pony wannabe GM there's a real GM in Toronto and the Leafs finally have an experienced, GM who understands you cannot win by dumping 90% of the budget on four offensive forwards, and depleting picks and prospects for rental players the team couldn't afford to extend or keep. Finally, there's a real sense of excitement with the team, and a GM who is in on literally every potential deal which has two huge benefits, 1) You cannot make moves without getting on the horn and getting an idea of value related to potential trades or UFA. 2) and possibly most important, you get a solid understanding of player types and values, which is a tremendous help in evaluating your own players, because player agents will always over value their clients and GMs (unless you're Kyle Dubas) will always under value players, and the two will meet somewhere between those two valuations. I'm getting the feeling that Marner is going to remain defiant to the end. He either gets overpaid and stays or he plays out his contract and some other team will over pay him. This is a grown man who cried on the bench during a game!!! HE CRIED!!! The second I saw Marner on the bench with those tiny tears streaming down his puffy red baby cheeks, I was immediately sickened and lost what razor thin I had for his character. As a fan of the Leafs, I want Marner gone. Because the core 4 has not worked. Shanahan has fumbled this team. Between hiring a rookie GM in Dubas, letting the players run the show, hiring a rookie coach in Keefe, not trading Marner or Nylander when they had an open trade window is the worst move in Leafs history. Marner has a terrible contract with no term, I really think Leaf fans overestimated his value in a league where cap efficiency is everything. Add the fact that he's a one dimensional and soft winger who folds in the playoffs, and it doesn't seem that enticing.
