I found this channel simply because of the Arizona situation and I’m really glad I did because Brody is one of those people in sports he when he talks I listen and I really respect and admire his opinion.
I think knowing the name midway through the first season isn’t a bad thing. Starts to form an identity while eagerly awaiting logo, colors, etc. for the following season
Came here to say this as well. It’s really not a big deal if we know the name even before the next season starts. They just wanted plenty of time to get the colors, uniforms, and logos right.
Good on ya Brodie for the Wasatch Front! More and more Utahns are going to you first for our NHL info. Understand where you are coming from on outlaws but it’s actually my top choice along with Yeti. Utah actually has as much history with outlaws in the Wild West days as anyone. Butch Cassidy and the hole in the wall gang among others. It actually would be a very good historical fit and tie for our state.
Also, as part of the Wild West stuff we left the USA and settled the territory. Plus, many of our religious leaders were jailed early on in Utah. As a Utahn i like Outlaws. I voted Mammoth though because the branding and colors chosen and we have a ton of Mammoth bones we've found in the state.
Mammoth would be a mammoth mistake. Utah Yeti is clean, simple, and pairs great with the word "Utah" like Bruiser Brodie said.. Plus, kids would be more into abominable snowman merchandise than mammoth stuff.
Why can’t they make jerseys and merchandise by the start of the season? Winnipeg didn’t have their jersey until, what, a month before the season? Sure they weren’t dealing with a new on-ice outfitter, but it’s still a new uniform. If they have to postpone fan merch by a couple months then so be it. They can easily come up with an identity by October lol. Plus we all already know it’s gonna be Yeti so they should just save us all the time and disappointment and announce it now.
Brodie, it's always nice to hear someone who can actually speak properly without going - umm, ahhh, like all the time. Love the polish you bring to the table.
Technically "Utah Hockey Club" is a duplicate name as well. The Montreal Canadiens full name is "le Club de hockey Canadien" and their logo is CH for Club de hockey.
This blew my mind. I was going to argue that the H stood for Habitants, but looked it up first to make sure. And zut alors! I wonder how many others have been living the same lie. I feel like I just entered the Matrix.
1. Mammoth....can you imagine the endless puns? One-sided wins will be "Mammoth victories" meanwhile blowing a 3-1 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals would be a "Mammoth" collapse. If they were to sign THE top free agent it would be to a "Mammoth contract" and of course the NBA/NHL arena needs to be largest in both sports so they can brag about the "Mammoth crowds of fans" pouring into to their Mammoth arena...20 years later the planned arena renovation will be a "Mammoth undertaking" 2. Blizzard...the weather puns would be hard to resist....upcoming home games can be called "Winter Storm Warnings" meanwhile sportscasters can predict if the Utah Blizzard will either bring a " storm of goals" in the big game or will they bring "nothing but flurries instead"? Look for a clutch goal as "icing the game" or if they lose, then the enemy team "thawed them out" or the "Blizzard melted under the pressure" Can the Utah Blizzard " dig their way out of a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Finals??" Bring on those puns!!! 3. Utah Yeti....Brazil is right. It simply rolls off the tongue. Yeti vs Avalanche games could award a trophy for winter supremacy between the two. That trophy can be awarded to the winning team by Santa Claus. You can also count on a Winter Classic game between these two teams. 4. Utah Hockey Club, it's original but it's also a lazy way out of trying to find a name. 5. Outlaws....I can't draw a correlation between Utah and Outlaws. Arizona could do that, particularly in Tombstone...Oakland can do that, but Utah? That's melodramatic. 6. Utah Venom....it sounds like an Arena Football team, or an old USFL team, or an XFL team, but it sure as hell doesn't sound like an NHL team to me. It's almost as misplaced as the Minnesota Wild, but that's just me.
Hockey Club is pathetic and Outlaws is so generic it makes Hockey Club sound imaginative. Blizzard sounds so Minor League the Hanson Brothers want to kick its ass. It's Yeti all the way...I'd bet my life on it.
Utah has a long history of outlaws and was definitely part of the wild west. Tons of western films are filmed in Utah. Sundance Film Fesitival in Utah is named after the Sundance Kid. Butch Cassidy.
One of the trade marked logos i saw was Utah inside striping similar to Montreal, Florida and Minnesota. I've grown to the idea of a 2 tone jersey with those stripes. Home being that dark blue with the powder blue and the away being white with that powder blue. I think it would be very simple for a first year design but still very hockey
It was said early on that the hockey team may have a tie in with the Jazz uniforms. The Jazz unveiled their new look a few days ago. I feel you’ll see the same mountains and Utah font as the Jazz.
I’m thinking the voting might end soon, but they’ll take the entire season u til they announce the winner and colors. Probably a big reveal with teasers and what not. Actually might be pretty awesome. I can’t wait!
I'm gonna venture a guess that the circular logo will be for center ice, the wordmark will be for the front of the jersey, and the state silhouette will be for the shoulder patch.
Yeti. Great team sponsor opportunity here. I kinda like Venom and Outlaws. I could even see them doing like the Rangers with the name diagonal on the front. If you have just a name and no logo. UHC honestly isn’t bad. The Hive could be Delta Center’s nickname.
Venom would be the best IMO, a cobra logo could be so cool. Yeti doesn’t make sense because plural of Yeti is Yeti’s. calling them Yeti is like naming them the Utah Wolf.
Great episode Brodie. I realized today that it’s been a while since I’ve watched traditional sports on TV. I just go to your feed because you cut to the chase and usually you’re on top of the topics I’m following. Request - any chance you could do an analysis of the Blue Jays? Should they blow it up?
Great coverage. Fun conversation for sure. I think at the end of the year they’ll realize what an impossible task it would be to change the name of their team after all the legal filings and paperwork and merchandise and advertising for “Utah Hockey Club” thoughts?
The naming thing is no big deal. Some soccer teams have mascots but go by "Whatever FC", "Whatever United", or "Whatever City (lol)" any way but still affectionately refers to the mascot. No big deal, everyone will just have to go with it for a season. They still may end up having mascot related merch with or without a new log available in season, but jersey's won't change.
Utah Hockey Club should not be an option for the long term name, fine if they want to use it for year one. Mammoth or Yeti are the best remaining options, though I think both are at risk of being a bit too cartoon-ish. Swarm was my favourite, with Utah being the beehive state, it has a link to that.
Arizona Coyotes forever. Love you guys! Josh you and your dad are an Arizona staple, your dad was an absolute rockstar, loved our captain coyote when he reigned! Hope you can do the same in utah. Will support our boys even tho they left AZ
Whatever name they go with, I hope they keep the colors. There's potential for a VERY clean look! The light blue makes sense because of Salt Lake. Side note: Utah is known for names that make no sense in Utah. It's not a state that's known for Jazz musicians, and Réal only makes sense in Spain. I see "Outlaws" as popular, but when people think of Utah, they think Mormons- non-threatening, straight-laced, people who follow the rules...so,it's ehh,and not really original. Yeti are actually from the Himalayas in India. Venom would have been great in Arizona more than Utah, ironically,or even Vegas, before they decided on Golden Knights.
Club is often used by football/soccer, like the Nashville Football Club before they changed their name to the Nashville Soccer Club. Be better Utah for something long-term. One year is fine since it was a crunch, but UHC... it's something that you select on a Thursday at 5pm before a 4 day weekend
Yes, it’s a stupid European soccer thing and has no place in a respectable sports league. At least in Europe these places were actually clubs at one time.
Caribou they couldve done a solid jersey with, just look at the Manitoba Moose AHL jerseys, they were awesome. Surpised caribou and swarm didnt make the final cut over HC, Venom or Outlaws
Right on! Could've called the Delta Center "The Hive". Light show consisting of a huge swarm of bees buzzing around throughout the arena. Smiling bee mascot wearing a Swarm jersey would be big with young kids.
Three? Pretty darn sure there was just two. One was and still is. the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the other was the Ottawa Rough Riders. If there was a third there is no record of it on the internet.
I thought I saw this on one of your videos; The Utah Trout! I really loved the colors of that sweater! I thought the neon accents were really cool. Just announce the YETI on opening night! Utah HC for one year. LET'S DROP THE PUCK! Because the players and staff are from Arizona, I'll be a fan regardless. BRING IT ON!!😊
As someone born and raised in utah, if they would have gone with another bee related name I would have lost it. The minor league baseball team has ran through a bunch of them they have been the Buzz , Stingers and currently Bees.
Well, at least with NJ, the Jersey Devil is specific lore exclusive to the state - so it fit well in the '80s. Kraken and Yeti are a little more broad and not Seattle, Utah specific.
C’mon Brodie. Yeti would be great, Mammoth would be solid Outlaws rolls off the tongue just like yeti it rhymes with Utah also and Butch Cassidy was from Utah. Blizzard is next they get them in Utah. Venom is stupid and too broad so is the Utah Hockey Club that’s not even a name it’s a title they can’t do that and it should not be placed above any of the others
Wouldn't be surprised if the league's plan long-term is to purchase the grizzlies for exactly that purpose. That's how the AHL got into California in the first place, buying out the existing ECHL owners and promoting those teams.
Sorry, I still hate "Hockey Club" I just think it is so boring and lacks identity. It's something that works for Soccer I guess, but not for Hockey 😅I appreciate the simplistic elegance of the logos but it needs to be something interesting. You want a logo that a little kid in Salt Lake City would want to have plastered all over their bedroom wall. That's what will help build a lasting fanbase in Utah. Meanwhile the Golden Knights, the Kraken or the Sharks entered with such a strong visual identity that creates engagement right away. Utah Yeti is the big winner for me. Rolls off the tongue, immediate visual identity. There are other good ones here but that's the one I'd pick if I were in that branding meeting.
You know what nickname is really bad for the city in which the team is located? Utah Jazz. Not a big jazz scene in the state from what I understand. Agree on Yeti if Swarm is no longer available. Also like Blizzard.
When the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, the franchise had its new jerseys, logo and identity designed and released by the end of August. Utah could do it also if they wanted to.
Very true! Ryan Smith, for all his Billions, hasn't a clue how to do this properly. First he says he's building a new arena. Then renegs, and is going to tear up the Delta Center, for what, 2 seasons of renovations? I'm starting to not trust him.
As a local, I just casted my 2nd vote for a name today. This time the survey gave voters 1 choice. I think we'll know soon enough the teams name. YES, I voted for Yeti.
Real hunch here.. The placeholder logos feature what will become team colors going forward. Name for year one is going to be Utah Hockey Club, which is why it made it to the final six, despite finishing outside the top ten. The actual name from 2025 on is going to be Venom. It too finished outside the 6 (10), but wound up one of the finalists. Smith reportedly favors Venom and has hoisted that name up quite a bit. Keep in mind, Bill Foley was supposedly adamant about some version of Knights with a color in front of it when Las Vegas was granted an expansion team. He who pays the fees.. you know the drill. My home is Mammoth. I honestly think if not Venom, they'll go with Mammoth. Won't want the headache with the cooler company and Avalanche.
I agree with Smith. I think venom is far and away the best choice. Just my personal opinion. The plural of Yeti and Mammoth is Yetis and Mammoths , so calling them Mammoth would be like calling them the Utah Wolf. But sounds like the public is deciding the name with this contest so if it’s Yeti it’s Yeti , he won’t over rule it ?
Agreed that the timing will be a weird deal if they announce mid season. Naming should either have been postponed or they should launch with the selected name.
this is great, because the penguins dropped light blue and dark blue twice. its a fun combo for a sports team. green and gold would have been good too, cuz the stars dropped those colors in 11.
Brodie, do you think the whole concept will be that they will have their name before the season start and will be called the Yeti. But they will only have UTAH on their jerseys for 24-25 season but 25-26 season they will have official Yeti logo, signs, brand etc?
we have to remember team use a lot of misdirection in these situations. they thought seattle was going to be the sockeye and had different colors on their teams website. and even when SJ chose the Sharks, that was not the first option. the fans voted for San Jose Blades 1st, but went w Sharks which was second in voting
As beeing into marketing for ages amd I have created a lot of international brand names I need to agree to the guy here on the screen, SWARM was actually a top favourite. Some comments came up with the critisism that it sounds like a swarm of bees??? Sorry guys over there in the states, a SWARM can be anything what is connected to each other to get distributed for success. At war days, soldiers had to swarm out to take the oponent down. The coliours don't have to be black and yellow? At the moment, the club colours are simular to the Seatle Kracken and nobody has a problem with that. That the UTAH Jazz are yellow and black is one thing but is is not in no way crossing the line with the hockey team. The Jersey will look amazing and revoulutionary compared to any other NHL teams.. The Mascot,: Looking like a little mountain what is permanentely spreading out soap bubbles (technically not a problem) what is symbolising the SWARM. The bubbles are always in a shape of stars and in different, american flag colours - white, blue and red.. Nobody has such a brilliant idea yeat. All the other names are Disney like, making no snse to the state of UTAH and the team what has a chance for the first time since years to make the paly offs. Go, UTAH SWARM
As much as the Utah Yeti doesn't make sense from someone across the pond, Utah Hockey Club is even worse considering they're a franchise. Calling them a hockey club insinuates a membership-based organisation. I just hope they go with the Mammoth.
I love this. It reminds me of the premier league and how there is so much pride in the city the club plays in. It's like a commitment to say that this club can not simply move to another city and have the same level of success and identity. I wish American sports were more rooted in the towns they play in
A number of MLS teams take their cue from Europe: LA Football Club, CF Montreal, Toronto FC, Austin FC, FC Cincinnati, Nashville SC, NYC FC, Charlotte FC, FC Dallas.
Kind of disappointed the final ones are just the same as the original choices that were trademarked, feel like it was set up to just be the from the start
Why they even put Utah Hockey Club in the mix of names to vote on, is ludicrous. One, the NHL would not allow it; two, it sounds like a Premier English soccer name. The final 6, only have 2 decent submissions. I would have liked to see the monikor " Bighorns" in the mix to be voted on. It was submitted. Ryan Smith got a bunch of rag tag names, which are blaise. The man knows " NOTHING" about hockey and tradition.
If the team name this coming season is just Utah (or Utah Hockey Club), what will the code in the scorebug be? UT? UTA? UHC (reminds me of my medical insurance company)? What do the Jazz use?
So my suggestion of the Utah Lucky bastards 🤣 was not retained ! Got the 2002 Winter Olympics and the latest NHL concessions over Quebec City. Am i Jealous ? A lot !
I may be in the minority but I think these final 6 names are not great. To me they seem more like minor league hockey club names than professional franchise names but to each their own. I was hoping they were gonna have Hive or Swarm as finalists.
Nope they suck. Hockey Club should never have been considered. Venom sounds like a minor league soccer team. Outlaws is the only one that is a proper plural noun.
Although I liked the Buzz, I think it sounds like a radio station KBZZ The Buzz all news all the time. Yeti and other like blizzard and snow and ice references all sound like Avalanche. That being said I voted first round Buzz and Yeti. Second round only Yeti!
Cross league Duplicates : Edmonton Oilers (NHL) Houston Oilers (NFL) ; Winnipeg Jets (NHL) and New York Jets (NFL); Detroit Lions (NFL) ,. B.C. Lions (CFL) and Trois-Rivières Lions (ECHL) ( Royal Blue, White , Grey).
Venom could be cool because you can have lots of different alternate logos. A scorpion, spider, Bee, gila monster, snakes, and wasps. Could have lots of themes that work well
Club is a very common name in football (soccer). In MLS alone you have LAFC, Montreal Club du Foot, NYFC, Austin FC, Charlotte FC, FC Cincinnati, Chicago Fire FC, Inter Miami CF, Nashville SC, Minnesota United FC, Houston Dynamo FC, Seattle Sounders FC, St. Louis City SC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC. In every one of these teams the "C" stands for club. Either Football Club or Soccer Club. So that is just MLS if you go to other leagues you will find dozens of not hundreds to thousands of "Clubs." So Utah Hockey Club is almost, if not the most, generic name in for a sports team you could fathom. So it is lame as lame could be.
