The first crash where the car hit the wall. The driver was John Force, his daughter was driving the other car. The guy who's car went out of control and was hit by the other car survived but he decided to retire from racing after that. He suffered some injuries but nothing life-threatening.
As someone who has spent many a weekend at an NHRA race there's nothing more terrifying than one of these cars exploding. In over 45 years, all of it spent at the now closed Raceway Park in Englishtown New Jersey, I've seen quite a few. The worst was during the Summernationals in 2008 when Scott Kalitta's car suffered a catastrophic engine explosion right in front of where I was sitting. Sadly he didn't survive the crash.
These cars go from a standstill to 500 kmh in under 3.5 seconds. When the engine fails like this it is like having 5 sticks of dynamite exp.ode in your face.
Great reactions - these are all "Top Fuel" cars exploding - meaning these cars have supercharged 8.2 Liter (500 Cubic inch) V-8, engines running on a fuel mixture of 90% Nitromethane - the engines are producing upwards of 10,000 HP. The "Normal" looking cars are a class called "Funny Cars" - they are basically a shorter wheelbase dragster chassis - with a light fiberglass body shell sitting over the top. Everything about this sport truly pushes the limits of what is possible in engineering.
10000 hp was like 10 years ago These are 11000 to 12000 hp Funny car bodies are carbon fiber with the inner support structures made from titanium. So everytime you see a funnycar body explode they just spent i would guess atleast $20,000. They're probably closer 50 or 60k. Hell 10 years ago a carbon fiber body for a door slammer was $10,000. And that was just the body.
@@kanoraguy Kenny( Capt. Chaos) korezky And Bruce Allen. They both retired after that. I have no idea how Kennys last name is properly spelled, so i took a crack at it. David Reyer was saying they probably were gonna call it quits at the end of that season anyway. Buddy Morrison had passed from cancer not that long before, and he said he had a tough time when they lost Lee Shepherd, he said he couldn't have lived with himself if Bruce had died.
