A consultant anaesthetist has told Sajid Javid that he will not get vaccinated against COVID and is unhappy at the mandatory requirement.

Actually he turned straight for the nurses and gave his back to the doctor initially - only when the doctor spoke up within mic shot did Sajid have to acknowledge him. Seems strange to me why he went for the nurses and not the doctor initially. Is it because they don’t have the medical training necessary and so are easier to lie to and convince that they need the vaccine, thus they will propagate your talking points? I think he knew that if he spoke to a doctor (regardless if the doctor is in favour or not), he will always get a more balanced and nuanced answer that wont benefit the message he wants to deliver.

To be fair he is absolutely correct that he is being advised by a ton of experts who are a lot more qualified about epidemiology and vaccines than an anaesthetist. For one thing, this guy saying the vaccine only lasts 10 weeks is dead wrong. It starts to reduce effectiveness after ten weeks, but it isn’t useless.

I am afraid medical issues are now so complicated that a minister who is not a doctor nor a clinical scientist cannot even comprehend the issue and make comments as meaningless as the ones shown here. I am not saying that being a doctor is sufficient to make the right decision, but at least being a doctor would allow a minister to understand the issue and make treasure of the answers given by clinicians and not dismiss them as "views": he might have "views", doctors have "positions backed by experience and facts"!

The fact that the HEALTH SECRETARY can only respond with "we take the best advise as we can" is appalling. Covid has been around for a while now and i'm sure he's been in conversation with these 'experts' on a daily basis. Why can he not support his opinion better and give an evidence based answer back. I think his intention was just to de-escalate, he knows he's right but that the doctor is a lot more passionate about the pandemic than even himself, because his job and livelihood is on the line. If the health secretary had argued with him, he would essentially be making an argument for why he thinks he deserves to lose his job. This doctor is more of a vaccine expert than he'll ever be. He asks a professional on the frontline his opinion yet he's trying to discount what the Dr is saying because it does not fit his narrative. Just because he is a doctor doesn't mean he is a vaccine expert...my son says exactly same thing and he is 18. My opinion is that he has a choice as to not take the vaccine and I respect that but why are most of the vaccine doctors encouraging us to take it and risk their livelihoods. People are being saved by others taking the vaccine, ie reducing infection, meaning less impact on hospital bed occupation, more healthcare available for other illnesses to be treated or dealt with....it just doesn't end with having a covid infection....its the knock on effect.

He made that sly comment "vaccine experts". We don't even need to be a doctor to understand the vaccine immunity wains after a few months so logically it would result (as the doc pointed out) in a perpetual cycle of 67M people needing a booster every 1 to 2 months which is just impossible.

It looks to me like the doctor has the prestige and authority to speak up when a lot of the other staff are too afraid. I've had my booster over Christmas, I've been very ill with delta and I work in a school which is currently rife with Omicron, but I don't want NHS staff who we were all clapping on our doorsteps to face the sack over this. It's terrible that everyone just abandoned the care workers for refusing the vaccine. School staff will be next and staff I work with don't want the vaccine. Unfortunately because this arguement has been left to the fringes, people might assume that i am anti vaccine, but I'm not, I am just aware that public services need staff to function, and that many of us have gone above and beyond for two years and none of us deserve the sack.

I face a nhs termination interview next week and am in the same position as the Doctor. He is quite correct in his reasoning. This mandate is clearly wrong, not scientifically sound and a direct violation of freedom of choice both personally and ethically in forced medical intervention.

About to be dismissed from my NHS job of 5 years because of this mandate. I'm not even in contact with patients and they've paid me a full salary working from home for 2 years!! Makes no sense whatsoever and is so against our basic human rights. So glad this Dr spoke out!! More to come....And maybe even yet another Government U-turn - how else will they respond to the mass exodus?? And they say they care about patient safety, this is the worse thing for patient safety!!
