It's not that people are more angry, its that they are more entitled believing they won't get arrested. We had one guy, a relative of a patient so not even the patient, that came to the ward to threaten staff with a cross bow because he was unhappy that his relative hadn't been discharged. The response was, oh he's been spoken to and he's not going to do it again. and that was it, that was the repercussions of threatening nhs staff with a crossbow. being talked to and then allowed to continue to visit. If he had done this in marks and spencers i don't think he would have just been talked to.

My manager doesn't care when I was kicked in the chest by my patient way back in 2022. They didn't even make an IR/datix right away. Only when our Trauma team reached out and that was the only time they asked me what happened. Though, I heard them and they were doubting me (obviously I'm not a local but an Asian nurse), even 2 of my colleagues witnessed what happened. Good thing I left the place together with my colleague who witnessed what happened. That manager was a racist from the start. 5 staffs left the ward in just 4 months😇

I've been hurt alot of times but then my empathy kicks in as they are very ill and may be done without intent but through I could assume some psychosis. Mental health wards needs to be risk assessed at all times on approaching patients.

Unfortunately it goes with the territory but what obviously needs to be improved is back-up, and two must stay together, the man is obviously a violent man because of his mental health probs but protection of staff must be 100% better, NHS needs good staff and mustnt be frightened away. This happens way too often on my ward working with Dementia. The patients are getting younger and stronger and there is no way around it... They need help because they're acutely unwell and we are trained. Although on the off chance that you are unable to safe hold quickly due to not having staff to support and they attack you, that's it!! waiting for support from the trust you are apart of is not as bad as people say but you can't help but question why they do not put things in place like de-escalation rooms on dementia wards filled with relaxation and sensory equipment to engage therapeutically. I can't speak for general hospitals but I really feel for people that get assaulted. It's not fair that we have to put up with this behaviour😭

The attack also can be for a very understandable reason. How many neglect and desrespect there is from medical staff? I'm not saying this was the case or every case, but we have to consider the circumstances in each case.

Blaming a mentally ill patient is unjust and only adds to the stigma surrounding mental health issues. It's crucial to show compassion and empathy towards such individuals. Instead of placing blame on the patient, we should direct our attention to the UK government and Rishi Sunak for allocating billions to foreign wars, such as in Israel and Ukraine, while neglecting to adequately fund the NHS mental health system, which is in dire need of support. Mr. Richard, the anchor, appears to be displaying a remarkable level of ignorance on this matter.

So the Nurse should not be able to talk about the trauma? Looks like you are blaming the Nurse.

If people don't get the mental health services they need it's no wonder attacks are up. Not an excuse but if someone is having a psychotic episode and they are put on a waiting list what do you think will happen? It's common sense that attacks will go up

I feel sorry for her but normaly the patients at a mental hospital are so drugged up that they cant move, sit or even walk. They be in a bad state because the medication is kicking in.

It's because those in aociety who get angry and can be violent are like everyone else very very angry that we cannot get care. Problem is some people will carry it out. This is the tory party's fault for austerity and running down services, add in the rhetoric on racism and they're even more angry

The truth that this profes sional is not saying is that side effects of the psychiatric medications given to patients are not being taken seriously. They cause anger and pain to patients, but they are being ignored.
