Neil Spector for real. My dad had the Marantz receiver with “quadrophonic sound”. If I remember right that meant 8 channels. The “A” section with L&R and L&R, the “B” section with same. Just the touch, the feel, oozed quality. Does anyone remember touching the tuner dial? It was a horizontal dial that had a silky smooth action where if you gave it a good flick it would glide like butter across the RF spectrum. Butter. Did I say butter? Butter. Every dial felt like a Mercedes as opposed to a Chevy. Back when quality ruled over empty flash. Marantz.
That was a very cool video with lots of great vintage gear and paraphernalia, but now I'm kind of interested in the story behind this? Why was all this valuable audio equipment just sitting around in a warehouse unsold for so many decades, and did the guy giving the tour ever explain the background? How do you even sell that huge mass of valuable, vintage equipment and get anywhere close to what's it's worth?
I'm sure there are some gems, most of it is just old junk, land fill, I suspect its just old crap that wasn't sold and end up there, presume it has to go somewhere. Suspect there are a few of these places around. Also the caps are questionable after 35 yrs. Interesting but just old junk.
The warranty is expired on all of it and how did this guy get in there all giddy giddy. He must be Minnie Pearls brother with that price tag on his hat but at least he got in to show everyone a stereo lovers tomb of treasures. China could never equal the quality of the Japanese.
This was Oshawa Stereo Sound in Oshawa Ontario Canada, the owner's name was Julius, he passed away at the age 82 about 10 years ago with all the inventory unsold. I have been there a few times, was a surreal experience, it was a joke actually. The JVC XL-Z1010 CD player (the one he holds in the video) was a Stereophile class A recommend comment and a giant killer in the day, it sold for around a grand in the late 80's, he still wanted list price for everything, and of course nobody bought very much. His family liquidated for pennies on the dollar when he died. A forum post from Canuck Audiomart talks about it BIT. ..... "Mike the fellas' name is Julius. He is in his early 80's. The store is Oshawa Stereo Sound and is on Taunton Road in Oshawa. Julius has been around since the late 70's I believe. The fella who started Whitby Audio (Dave Johann) got his start in audio working for Julius way back when. I have bought a bunch of stuff from Julius over the years. People have been trying to buy Julius' inventory for over a decade now but he's declined. A few years ago I approached Julius knowing that he was interested in selling off his inventory. His price back then was "$1Million for everything" including his parts collection, a massive amount of obsolete trade-in gear, and a warehouse full of gear in storage next to his storefront. Most of his stuff is NIB product from the 80's and 90's. He's got a ton of JVC's superdigifine series. Julius' prices are typically MSRP and he's not much into dealing."
Yes, that is true from what I know. I spent 5 days a week in there for 8 months selling stuff for him. It was a surreal experience. He not only wanted full list price, but amortized the value year by year. We sold new in the box nakamichi tape decks to a guy in texas for thousands of dollars. Then he bought more! He bought $12, 000 total worth of Nakamichi units, and the way Julius priced things that was only 3 units. I really got to know Julius over that time and miss talking with him. He had seen a LOT in his life, and had fascinating tales. He was a great man.
Got my first hifi setup in 1974. A Pioneer SX-434 receiver, BIC 920 turntable and KLH model 31 speakers. All for under $250. I see it's not all high end stuff in your video but I could spend hours looking through that inventory. What a treat.
Its absolutely wonderful to see old things that still have a purpose - and the old hifi is interesting too! Greetings and warm regards from a hifi loving relic from New Zealand!
yeah, at least one other person has asked the obvious questions. What is the story here? Why did it sit for 35 years? Also, why would a business sit on that much inventory for that long and not think anything of it. Just doesn't happen (or so I thought until seeing this) C'mon. Let's have some backstory. Spit it out.
People when they die they go to heaven but for me when I die please send me to that store,my tears are down while watching this video, I am incredibly in lobe with any stuff that made before internet generation
Is my gold dream to have one new Stereo Audio Syswtem Vintage, JVC, Pioneer, Technics, etc..Actually an impressive collection. Sadelly is not for sale, in t it? Congratullations!!
@ 5:46 he points to some speakers and remarks that they are "Air-suspension" speakers,... They are not "Air-suspension", that would require a sealed-cabinet! the speakers he was pointing to were "Bass-reflex" (Aka-"Ported") type speaker cabinets. I believe he got his terms mixed up and was actually referring to the "Surround" or the outer foam suspension of the speaker, noting that they were still viable and not dried out and turned to dust.
Amazing ...I´m speechless. All these wonderful gear from the time, when analogue was what we listened to, and finally are doing again, thank god. Down thumbs here are unfortunately lack of culture and hifi knowledge.
That is awesome!! Wonder what ever became of all that equipment? Thank you vintagestereos, For taking us back in time and sharing what time had forgot for so long, Also having us imagine what it would be like to own all of that. Great video,
omg! i thought i died and went to heaven! i get the feeling your dad retired or passed away...where ever he is bless him. you know he made thousands of music lovers happy as hell! remember music expresses what words cannot....rock on!
there used to be a market for things that sounded great. listening through an Iphone speaker still sounds like an AM transistor radio to me compared to my Sansui Quad speaker system with 12" speakers, sony turn table playing Ghost in the machine on vinyl I had in the 80's
yep, I have put together a sweet-sounding system and all I get is grief from the war dept. Everyone now wants that alexa speaker or some other crap, especially the ladies, don't want that good sound stuff cluttering up their house, instead, junky antiques and cats
@@cardtrix1970 "mid-grade consumer audio". Exactly right. How would that be "an Audiophile's dream"? It's only my opinion of course, but I sold Pioneer and JVC from 1974 on, along with HK, Sony, Kenwood, Luxman, and most other brands (except Yamaha, we couldn't get Yamaha!). We actually compared the brands we sold, and Pioneer, JVC, (and Sony when they started using digital amps) just didn't sound as good as the others. HK (receivers) were the closest to what I would call audiophile, but HK also didn't have the power to drive Dahlquist, Infinity 2.5 and 4.5, Magneplanar, etc. For those we sold HK Citation separates, SAE, GAS, and other higher-end brands. Kenwood also made some amazing separates in 1978+. I'm not ripping on Pioneer, but they were mainly low-end budget audio until they started making their Elite products. Those models sounded great but were not inexpensive.
@@guitaryst Hi David - I respect your opinion, especially when you stated that when amps/receivers went "digital"(early 1980s). I have a Pioneer SX 1010, an SX 1250, SX3900 and a Qx 949A; all of which have been rebuilt and bench tested over time. I also have a pair of non-molested Pioneer HPM 150 speakers I purchased about 10 years ago for $600.00 with foam surrounds and some/glass tweeter intact and working. I realize there was(and "is")a..."higher end", but my systems are very "tweaked", & produce a great sound. Main system includes a Pioneer PL 630 Turntable and CTF-1000 Cassette Deck...all fine-tuned.
@@cardtrix1970 The bottom line of course is always, are YOU happy with it? I know some folks would think my system doesn't sound as good as brand XYC, but I paid for it and I am quite happy with it. I am a rep for several lines and could replace my system but I choose to spend that money on more important things like guitars, amps, and pedals.
Pretty cool, but 90 percent of this stuff is low- to mid-fi doorstop material. Whoever invested in this will be hard-pressed to make a profit unless they inherited it.
i totally agree' mostly pioneer and jvc junk..yhose s[peakers were real shit' the accuphase will sell for a few bucks, but if the guy who bought all this crap' has the time to keep posting it on ebay...hope he makes his money back, unless he's a real snook!
You should slow down the video and look closer. True there was plenty of mid-fi there. But I saw lots of reel to reels, and top of the line Sansui and Nakamichi. Even the top of the line Pioneer is pretty good. (which there is quit a lot there in addition to the so-so mid-fi) There are lots of gold nuggets there. You just had to dig thorough all the crap JVC stuff and dvd players. One example is the several boxes of Nakamichi Dragon cassette players. You can tell me they are crap all day long but they sell for $1500 to $3000 EACH all day long in nice used condition. And to get one NEW in the BOX? Jesus... I dont know. $5000? And he didnt have one or two.. He had stacks of them...
This is when stuff was made great. The only thing that I would caution on items this old is to make sure the belts are good in the tape decks and old amps should probably be brought up with a variac. I'm sure with minor care, these units are fabulous. I wish I could have been part of this. Thanks for sharing. Very cool.
I saw this video in 2012 for the first time when living in Javia Xabia Spain. In 2017 I arrived in Tacoma WA USA. And have bought two complete Pioneer Spec 1 and 2 based rack sets over here last few years and my house full with 70 other vintage 70's golden hifi age gear (I'm not Spanish but Dutch, but I just lived ih Spain for 4 years between March 2010 and december 2014. After that I lived a year in San José Costa Rica and in jan 2016 till march that year in Panama City, Panama etc etc. Were I have watched this same video also over and over again in my Hotel Rooms! ). Funny to see this video now again when I do own two Spec sets myself thus. But it all started with this RU-vid video I watched the first time while still living in Spain!
It`s almost 3 years since this video was filmed....what happened to all this stuff ? I worked for 2 fairly large stereo stores in the `70s, never saw anything that compares to this warehouse....where IS this place ????
@George Miller yea. But not because they are superior. Because some people subjectively have the taste of liking the sound of tubes. Because tubes distort, which makes this warm sound. A tube is completely unlinear and even with circuitry to prevent that it is far away from a perfectly linear silicon. With this linearity you have all capabilitys to change the sound to your likings. Also you need to stick to like 10 Watts speakers with extremely light membrane and wont ever get a too good bass response because of damping factors under 10
I found an old tube stereo amp in my shed recently,it's a gold color Peak ST-100.Do any of you know anything about them please coz i can't find much info on the net.
@@dom3827 You should listen to a good tube amp driving a Klipschorn speaker. 10 Watts will either have the neighbors calling the police, or running to your house to join the party. 10 watts will drive those puppys over 120db. And sound damn sweet at the same time. It doesnt have to always be about whats "superior" or 'Linear". And the bass from those 15" woofers will blow "her clothes off". Sometimes its just about the music. Peace out.
It would have been neat to take a sample of each more component that's aged well in the market and have engineers analyze the values of circuit components vs heavily used working examples.
Holy crap....this is absolutely amazing. I grew up during this era and actually saw my Garrard turntable and a poster that had my JVC camcorder! This stuff is definitely not junk....there is a huge market for vintage stereo and I would assume anything that is mint in an unopened box would be the holy grail to someone.....too bad that place wasn't close to where I live. It was truly unbelievable.
John Messina. Hi John I can't agree more my friend. I'm in The UK. I wish I could get over there & be alowed to chose the 7 items I'd like for building my own system. Oh Yeh & some high end speakers to go with it too. Jimbo.
That Pioneer RT-2044 system in the back (even out of the box) is an easy $2000.00+ in NOS condition. Belts are a 10-minute fix. And yes, it was better because it was BUILT better. Anything newer (and analog) is orders of magnitude WORSE and sounds like it. (UNLESS it's ultra nosebleed hyperinflated gouge-fest gear.) Hope you got everything you were hoping for when it sold. If it sold, I've got as many 1980's as I can house, but if find a NOS one of those, I'll try to make some room! LOL...
this video gets me excited , I have watched it a couple times , and it is nice to know there are still finds like this out there . I can appreciate the excitement of seeing all the Vintage gear . Thank You for sharing ! . Ray in Pa.
Audiophile, professional,high-end???its mostly midfi junk, maybe you can get $10 a pop at your garage sale for this stuff. If you had some classic marantz tube stuff -now youre talking big bucks.
Imagine the magnificent Reel to Reel machines in this warehouse??? This is the candy store of my dreams. The only components that might age are the caps and rubber belts. The beauties in this warehouse deserve good homes. Compare this to today's audio junk.
All I always purchased is vintage, ran into some issues and had to sell many stuff, but my sound system went into storage, went and go it out moved back to PA, and a neighbor goes like, dude can you get this radio that is on my way and I don't understand anything about it, he get fed up with it, when I went to check "the radio" It was a Onkyo TX-DS797, that's the creme of onkyo vintage, it was complete with huge speakers and all its parts, all it needed was coaxial sound wires and that's it, I had a pair inside a box of sound stuff, a bit of bad side was that I couldn't resist to put it together and didn't realize the value was in 80 and it make the walls vibrate at 3am, I'll be expecting the dirty looks 👀. LMAO, it has so many settings 😂😆😁. Excellent piece of equipment, and free 😂..
n0tyham What's shady about this? I'm not even selling it. Of course the DVD players weren't from the 70s, neither were a lot of the newer receivers, tapes decks and other stuff but for the love of god look at all the cool vintage stuff that IS there!
I just ran across this video. What a time capsule! Is any of that NOS still available? I went to the website in your description above but it seems to no longer be there. Specifically, I'm looking for an Akai AA-R42 receiver, EPI T/E360 speakers, and an Onkyo Integra M-504 amp, but will consider anything you have available. I got to open up a pair of Radio Shack time capsule speakers from the 70's and that was a fantastic experience... Vintage Speakers: REALISTIC Nova-6 - Sheffield Lab Drum Solo Demo via Home Theater
I just wish to god I had been on the Internet back in 2012 n got to see this then. I have always wanted to have my own high end audio separates system like some of these could of made up for me. And to include a top of the range real to real tape recorder and a 8track player recorder. I just wish I could be alowed in there to take 1 of each of what I would need to make up my own music seperates system. but sadly I was born to late I love the 70's n 80's stereo equipment. oh well a guy can dream I spoze.
dud the stuff was crap then and would be even worse now,,you never saw and hi end stuff just stereo crap,,that wasn't worth shit 30 years ago,,you missed out on nothing.
@@odincoulombe706 True some of the equipment was just so-so. But I did see quite a bit of Nakamichi, Sansui, and top of the line Pioneer. THAT stuff is pure gold today. The dvd players are crap obviously but the rest of it isnt too shabby. Plus I saw several reel to reel boxes and some very nice turntables.. Any one who thinks this stuff sounds like crap had never really listened to it. It sounds a thousand times better than fkn Itunes on POS phone like most young people listen to today. It blows my mind how some people think good audio comes from a phone with a set of Beats headphones. Now THAT is shit audio...
Very neat those products found customers. I have a few Marantz, Kenwood, Pioneer receivers from the late 1970's. Nothing like this of course. He said about 5 million in stock. I would believe it. The older stereo components are getting big-time attention on eBay and other consumer sites. It is amazing.
I can smell the place! Used to work in a storage warehouse for a large Japanese brand: audio, video and accessories. Home, car and portable. Stacking the wood cabinet floor-model TVs 3 high, by hand, in a tight space. (Showing my age.) What a great job for an audio loving teen.
So 5 years on has this stock been sold, scrapped or still there? It's not worth anything if it's not being sold! For all those saying it's just low end junk I think I'd rather see the newbies who are getting into vinyl use this rather than certain suitcase style turntables!
I bought some of this stuff from you when you were on ebay, under "envirosponsible" and you always sent my stuff out quickly. Why did ebay close down your account? I bought a bunch more from "sahand0" on ebay. Actually, this stuff is not all gone. As of February 10, 2018, "sahand0" still has some left and is selling them on ebay.
Yep I just picked up a nice little JVC AE-5 amp and tuner quite impressive sound for 30w, wish I had pulled the trigger though on the brand new Pioneer SA-8800 when he had them!
Hello Sr ! I know this is an old video , but i have to say : CONGRATULATIONS !!! If you sold it or not is no the issue ! The important is : you see it ! in person ! Greetingd from Argentina !!!!
