Nicaragua Hates Maps and Addresses 🇳🇮

If you spend time in #Nicaragua, you will quickly realize that addresses, maps and so forth basically don't exist. Even Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze struggle to show correct routes, directions, roads, etc. It's very hit or miss. So much information is missing. Why do Nicaraguans use such bizarre mechanisms instead of traditional addresses? Why does no one learn how to read a map? Why does the culture eschew all of this locational information? Is GPS becoming a thing?

This is so true! Not to mention we never say East or West. We say “arriba” for East and “abajo” for west. This refers to the direction the sun rises and sets.

OMG, the arriba / abajo thing is crazy. And so many Nicaraguans are like "I don't know how to use that OR east/west either!" jajaja

When we hired a car I used my phone for navigation. It definitely had some quirky routes which I got the hang of. It would take me off the main road through a village to then put me back on the main road again! My wife had the job of copilot to scrutinize directions after the first detour! But we managed! Great book on Nicaraguan history post Spanish rule is: "Nicaragua - A history of US intervention and Resistance" by Daniel Kovalik. Really worth the read!

I remember reading some years back about the song "Where the Streets Have No Name" by U2, and hearing that it was about Nicaragua... or North Ireland (according to Bono himself)... or somewhere else perhaps. In any case, I think the Nicaraguans have dibs on making this an unofficial anthem. It certainly is accurate.

I learned that before the 1972 earthquake, the old Managua city had street names and numbers and people used them. Because the city was almost completely destroyed, and it's never really recovered, generations after just used simple directions ignoring the existing street names. If you dig up old photos or videos of streets in Managua from the 50s and 60s you will catch a few street signs with the street name on them, similar to what you see in the US. Before communism took over, Nicaragua had strong ties with many developed nations including the US. Those were their best days. Managua was rebuilt twice because of earthquakes, although not fully.

@@1Corinthians15.1-4 my grandma said that address back then were different. One example is the Crowne Plaza Hotel address; Octava Calle Sur Oeste #101, Managua, Nicaragua
@1Corinthians15.1-4
@1Corinthians15.1-4 2 месяца назад
@@Alexmndt That's one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake. If you look at the Chinese Restaurant right next to the Crowne Plaza, on the same street, you would think it's "Octava Calle Sur Oeste 103 or 201" or whatever but it's not. Google maps has the restaurant address as "Esquina Oeste del Hotel Crowne Plaza, Avenida Simón Bolivar." Which isn't an address. It literally just says "west corner of the Hotel Crown Plaza and Simon Bolivar Avenue." That's evident that the folks just made up their own adress system on top of what was already there.

I wonder how you get things shipped to you from abroad , for example if you are an expat living in Nicaragua... I hope at least the postal system or courier such as DHL know how to reach your home.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 2 месяца назад
No, I've got videos on why you never use or want to use mail (anywhere) and why nothing like DHL can work. You HAVE to use a Nicaraguan service. Has nothing to do with addresses. There are zero international companies with agreements with customs. And mail is never good. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vabZ-_4CgyM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wnkdw2WsqVk.html

I'm Nicaraguan and I hate when people give directions like "Where the X cinema used to be.." and I'm like, bro that thing is not there anymore why do you still use it? And becomes harder when you go to other departamentos. Another thing we are used to say is "From X church, 100 meters al lago" jaja when we can use north or "Arriba referring to east or abajo to west" we are unique jajaja

Hey Mr. Scott! I’m thinking about moving from California to Nicaragua but I would like to know, what do you do for a living? Is there any type of remote job that I can do to earn US dollars working from Nicaragua ?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 2 месяца назад
Well any job that you can do remote, you can do from Nicaragua. I'm a technology and business consultant. I've been remote for 25 years. Far better to be remote from Nicaragua than somewhere in the US with high taxes and high cost of living. Your income goes so much farther here for the same job.

@@Seekingtruth-mx3urHi. You might try Scott's video called: Rules for Working In & From Nicaragua. Feel free to ignore me though. It's just that I can hear Scott's voice in my head wishing people would try some of his copious other videos before asking. I think his short answer would be that you just get the job and as remote work it doesn't matter what country you're doing it in as long as your not working for a Nicaraguan employer. But I could have that all wrong. Scott? How'd I do?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
