You bringby either substituting for a or for b. You get quadratic equation in one variable with two solutions. And then substitute to get the value of other.
Much simpler: Since ab = 100, once you know a + b = 80, substitute 80-b for a in the first equation: (80-b)b = 100 80b - b^2 = 100 b^2 - 80b + 100 = 0 Use quadratic equation as before.
