Don't feel guilty about it. Accept his generosity! Makes him happy, too. It's possible that you were his first customer of the day. Thais really believe in good luck. And sometimes they get very ecstatic after the first sale, and they believe it will make the rest of the day prosperous. Accept it. Pay it forward. You were also nice to advertise his business!

It is very common in Thailand that a vendor should get impressed of something in you and give you what they sell for free so you can just feel absolutely no guilt of it. And you two's extremely friendly personality is no doubt to impress a Thai vendor. He maybe even one of your followers. Some Thais are shy to announce it but they're still your unspoken fans.

For a situation that you got something for free and you want to return a favour, just buy something and give it back. It doesn't have to be the same price anything would be okey. This we called it "Nam Jai" or gratitude+kindness+generous. This is what we did in the old days when money was nothing, we exchanged what we had.

the pink crunchy bits in the Thai sweet is diced water chestnut, usually they get coated in cassava flour then boiled in hot water which explains why you get the soft texture outside and crunchy inside.

That smoothie lady is all over RU-vid as the BEAUTIFUL SMOOTHIE LADY. That's why her stand is so popular. That purple filling dessert is MUN MUENG. MUN is potato and MUENG is purple. In the Thai language, the adjective comes after the noun, similar to Spanish. If you don't pronounce the letter (N) in MUN then the words sound like MANGO or MU-MUENG.

Tland is a foodie’s nirvana, it’s SO fun trying the many different eats (even bugs, pull the legs of the grasshoppers though lol) ..one can spend hours experimenting and then hours in the gym to compensate of course..thx for the fun vid 🙏🏻🇹🇭

Not just for foreigners and not just a trend for now. I’m Thai and I get food, snack, sweets and drink for free sometimes. It’s just Thai generosity because I don’t think I look anything close to a beggar. Onetime because I didn’t have changes but a 500 baht banknote so the seller (must also be the owner of the shop) just said to me to take it (a bottle of coke). He looked so chill. Another time even more impressive since I just wandered around, walked back and forth, looking for restaurants but couldn’t find one, the local opened the gate of her house asked me what happened and then invited me to have a meal in her house! I ended up having meals there till the end of my trip because there is no restaurant around. I insisted to pay for all other meals though.

On the shaved ice... first thing you got was tubtim krob... tubtim means ruby, krob means crunchy or crispy... FYI... the proper way to have the most satisfied tubtim krob is pairing with waterchesnut and the mutated coconut (we called maprao kati...maprao means coconut, kati means coconut milk but it does not has any milk at all...thai people loves it and a bit hard to find, too)...or you can check this recipe in the best world dessert from CNN...
