Always wanted to try the zero. Seemed like the only decent home option for a while but the price wasn’t justifiable at the time. Settled for the Timemore 64s at the kickstarter price and it’s been fantastic.
Hi Kev! I thought that this was a really thorough and entertaining review. :-) I think the Niche must be a high-quality grinder, but I’ve never tried one myself. I would like to see the planetary gearbox inside, as those are super cool. Gear boxes are really neat, for what they can do to exert more torque. If the motor was directly coupled, I do think that 130 W would be weak for such a large burr size, but with a gearbox, I don’t see that being an issue. At least that would be my estimated guess. Take care! Tom.
I'm lucky enough to have coffee stall in my local market. Great selection of coffee. As I do not have a grinder, they were more than happy to do it for me, dialing in for my Dedica.
How can you dial in using pre-ground coffee? I trust you're using the stock pressurised rather than a proper unpressurised one. You should know that pre-ground coffee stales within a matter of hours
That's great, and great if you're enjoying the espresso you can make with that setup. If you get your own grinder at some point, you'll probably find that elevates the espresso and the experience. Ta, Kev.
granted, I'm watching this on my laptop with less than great speakers, but the duo just sounds much more annoying in tone, to my ear. I was going to go into an explanation of what effect a change in "1db" means, but nah - everyone can investigate that for themselves. Anyway, for some people this won't matter a bit, but for me, early in the morning before I've had my coffee, my tolerance for noise is at its lowest :D I've had a zero since the early days and I use it primarily for filter brews (daily) and also for espresso when the mood strikes. I absolutely LOVE it. I do think the flat "filter" burrs would probably be a smidge better, but I would not want to give up the option to make fantastic espresso when I want it. Nice review - keep it up!
Great observation. I bought the Zero because it was Low db. It exceeded my expectations because the tone/vibration is also so much more gentile on my ears than most other grinders. It rumbles rather than screams. The Zero may still be the best grinder for people with sound sensitivity, autism, and/or SPD(sensory processing disorder). (I used a hand grinder for 5 years until the Niche came out)
Awesome review! Have you ever used the Fiorenzato Allground Sense grinder? I want to get a better grinder to use with my Breville Barista Touch machine. The Duo is one that I was looking at, but was also wondering about the Eureka grinders and the Fiorenzato Sense grinder. Any advice you can give me on any grinder you think is good would be so helpful for me. Thank you so much!
Thanks 😎 I've not used the Allground, does look good! I will be trying to get hold of one. When you get into this kind of price point though there's really quite a lot of choice.
Thx - if i git it right the duo is a bit slower in grinding than the zero. If they got similiar motors - the gear transmission on the duo is shorter? It needs more torque. normally the larger burrs should be faster 😅
