They characterize a child's mentality so well in this scene. Hakase's thoughts slowly landing on the idea of the dogs eating her if she was caught by them is very accurate. And her crying about it is sadly adorable.
Probably even adults. They're just not thinking about a dog bite but the next office meeting or something else that a little more serious. But the mechanism is the same, it's how we humans are wired.
I recall a TL note in the sub I watched, saying it was a joke/reference to a popular Japanese phrase. Where Sakamoto said "Boil me or fry me, do whatever you want."... apparently they say something like that rather commonly in causal settings in Japan just to show indifference or to indicate giving up or lack of motivation. Professor/Hakase seemed to internally take it more literally in that situation though. Still kinda characterizes a child-like mentality, most really young kids won't fully and immediately understand a figure of speech after all.
I love Mai in this scene. Initially, she just has her head turned towards Hakase when Hakase notices the dogs. After seeing her reaction, Mai unleashes the dogs and now her full body and feet are facing Hakase, showing that Hakase’s presence and reaction was the reason Mai unleashed the dogs. Mai is such a troll lol.
Yeah and it shows she knows what she's doing because she immediately went to buy shark chocolate to make up for it right after 😂 but I can't remember if Mai had met her already at this point or not

This skit always makes me feel a certain type of way, the animation is great and the comedy is fantastic, but I used to be petrified of dogs when I was a kid! Makes me want to protect poor professor lmao
All i could think about is that in certain parts of the world, the dogs would be euthanized and the dog owner would be either made to pay damages to the children's families or jailed. An old lady in my grandmother's flat got bitten by a dog on a leash. Owner (a doctor at that) got jailed for a year and the dog got euthanized.
To this day, I still call Nichijou one of the greatest animes of all time due to the fact that the Animation Team looked at their budget and said “Fuck it we ball.”
oldspice051 If you think _this_ anime’s silly and over the top, may I suggest Gintama or Pop Team Epic? (Unless, you’re already a fan of one of or both of them)
You make it sound like it's an OLD series. (but then again I grew up watching 'Tetsujin 28-go' and 'Mach GoGoGo', under their American titles of course).
"Humans help each other out, Takashi. Animals are the same, Takashi. Don't underestimate the bond between animals and humans, Takashi." "Grandpa..... I'm Kiyoshi." I freakin died laughing.
1:45-2:16 is a piece where the history of intimation must admire. The mixture of fear with pun is sensationally outstanding. R.i.p. those who brought laughter and joy to our lives through this intellectually outstanding intimation
Manager: OK guys. We only have a small budget, so don't go nuts on this super simple scene... okay?? Animators: of course 😇 Manager: - Has left the chat - Animators: ... - *god mode activation noises* -
This clip and the principal with the deer clip got me to watch the entire show. Loved it all. Having watched this put a lot of other great shows on my recommended list I likely would never have seen otherwise :)

Basically, Mai's dogs were trained to bite her two friends, and while they were doing that, She she went ahead and bought the chocolate for Hakase. Now that's killing two birds with one stone!
