I'm two weeks late to the party but I've read the comments and listened to Nicholas's take, and I'd like to respectfully disagree. Lots of disagreeing out there already, but very little respect. So not going to put anyone down for feeling like they do, except maybe to suggest that I'm hearing strong opinions from ppl who by their own admission don't know enough about the topic to feel that strongly about it to the point where they are not open to reshaping their views when presented with information that is new to them. I feel like Ukraine is worth supporting. Here's why. First, we have been in a struggle to create the conditions necessary for (at the very least) citizens of the US to live in a situation where the goal is for everyone to be treated equally and given as much freedom as possible and still maintain a safe civil society, since the revolutionary war. As for influencing matters beyond our borders, there are arguments for protecting and spreading democracy, and arguments for letting the rest of the world work out their problems. We've tried to strike a balance, and have overshot each extreme a few times. Vietnam and Iraq both had our soldiers shaking their heads and saying why were we there. In 1940 and 1941 there was talk very similar to what we're hearing today: Why us, this is Europe's problem, we have domestic issues to attend to. It took Pearl Harbor to change that. Given those two limits, I'd argue that the Ukraine situation has much more in common with WW2. To preface , the US is a prosperous and powerful enough of a nation to be able to handle both domestic issues and international threats at the same time. No one is suggesting we diminish our domestic focus or funding in order to send arms to Ukraine. First, the long term perspective on the situation has me very concerned about Putin and Russia, and that takes some understanding of history after WW2 to fully grasp. Skipping the tl/dr version, it's apparent to me that Putin has been hard at work trying to restore Russia to the peak of its power as the USSR. Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and the first Ukraine conflict in 2014 represent the first steps. Now it's the rest of Ukraine, and lots of talk about Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and bridging the gap between Belarus and that funny little enclave they maintain on the Baltic Sea. I heard something to the effect that once they accomplish those goals, they will have reduced their border with Europe from 8,000 kilometers to 800. Not seeing all of that as part of a singular, unified overarching campaign of the Russians is, I believe, a huge mistake. We spent 50 years at odds with the USSR and that only eased 30 years ago. Putin is a product of the USSR. He was pretty far up in the ranks of the KGB. He still believes everything they represented, he's bitter it got dismantled, and he wants to regain that power and continue the goals the USSR had before they broke apart. I shouldn't have to remind anyone that the plan embodied by the old USSR and what Putin has in mind does not feature stopping and sending roses to the west once the original USSR is restored. Don't forget, if Russia wins in Ukraine and we do end up having to confront Russia directly, we will be fighting against Ukrainians in addition to whoever else they manage to roll up before things get bad enough for us to actually send troops, and from seeing what they've done so far against a much larger invading army I'd feel much better if we didn't have to tangle with the Ukrainians as part of a larger Russian fighting force. I feel that Ukraine may be the last opportunity we will have to convince Russia to stand down, without having to send troops. I also feel that should we let Ukraine go and have to deal with the problem later, we will be looking at a hundredfold larger economic hit, and many US soldiers' lives lost to boot. But by then we will probably have more to worry about than just Europe. China has the same philosophy of governance and expansion as the USSR did, and will undoubtedly side with Russia. They will be emboldened by our indifference to Ukraine and attack Taiwan. North Korea will see conditions finally suitable for doing what they've wanted to do since the 1950s and invade South Korea. Iran and most of the Arab world will join in any larger conflict, just because they hate us and will hate us for millennia. They will promptly take Israel off the map for starters. That may leave India with little choice but to join as well. We assume they are our ally forever but that would be shortsighted; they have been neutral to the Ukraine situation and they're geographically closer to Russia and China than they are to the US. Because we have suddenly and without warning withdrawn our participation with our European allies we have already done damage to our reputation with them and can't realistically bank on their support of our initiatives as we have to this point. They in turn will find it harder to keep countries to their east, who are on the fence, from choosing the wrong path. That, my friends, is WW3, with a front in Europe, one for Israel, and two in Asia. And that is the BEST case scenario for WW3. That's if no one uses nukes. Unlikely? Maybe. Plausible? Absolutely. If we were to look back at Ukraine from such a terrible perspective, we will be kicking ourselves for not putting a stop to things for pennies on the dollar, without committing troops at all. From what I've learned about the SOF community they consider every scenario including the worst case when designing their approach to situations, so I'm always a little surprised when I don't hear them discuss what I've just laid out, even if it's to dismiss it. Ukraine is being held to a very high standard for a fledgeling democracy only recently freed from what we consider to be an oppressive existence as part of the USSR. We should be helping them continue to grow towards democracy, not write them off because of their imperfections. If anyone actually reads this and disagrees, flame away. I might gain some new perspectives from rational responses. However notice that I did not mention political parties once. The first sign of that, or insulting tone, and I stop reading.

I fuck with bro but I disagree that on this one, Ukraine is the 2nd largest country in Europe if Russia is allowed to take over Ukraine nothing will stop Putin and we’ll end up fighting Russia ourselves in the next 10-20 years we as Americans live in comfort knowing countries can’t just invade our boarders the way Russia is doing Ukraine if we’ve experienced that we’d probably think differently

Countries don't pay a fee to join NATO. They need to be invited by consensus and after they join, they commit to spending 2% of their GDP annually on defense.
