Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - The Carny

Filmed for Live and Loud on MTV on 18 May 1997 after Nick Cave had been nominated for the best 1996 male artist and refused the honor (see his letter to MTV on www.nick-cave.com). The songs performed were: Into My Arms, Brompton Oratory, West Country Girl, Far From Me, and The Carny. Sorry for the mess up in the middle of the clip, it's how it was on my copy.
Far From Me can be found here: • Video .
Warren Ellis' appearance on the accordion makes version even more mad and circus-like. The Carny is one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever, full of savage beauty and an intensity that only Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds can bring ...
Lyrics:
And no-one saw the carny go
And the weeks flew by
Until they moved on the show
Leaving his caravan behind
It was parked out on the south east ridge
And as the company crossed the bridge
With the first rain filling the bone-dry river bed
It shone, just so, upon the edge
Dog-boy, atlas, half-man, the geeks, the hired hands
There was not one among them that did not cast an eye behind
In the hope that the carny would return to his own kind
And the carny had a horse, all skin and bone
A bow-backed nag, that he named Sorrow.
How it is buried in a shallow grave
In the then parched meadow
And the dwarves were given the task of digging the ditch
And laying the nag's carcass in the ground
And boss Bellini, waving his smoking pistol around
saying "The nag is dead meat"
"We can't afford to carry dead weight"
The whole company standing about
Not making a sound
And turning to dwarves perched on the enclosure gate
The boss says "Bury this lump of crow bait"
And the rain the rain came
Everybody running for their wagons
Tying all the canvas flaps down
The mangy cats growling in their cages
The bird-girl flapping and squawking around
The whole valley reeking of wet beast
Wet beast and rotten hay
Freak and brute creation
Packed up and on their way
The three dwarves peering from their wagon's hind
Moses says to Noah "We shoulda dug a deeper one"
Their grizzled faces like dying moons
Still dirty from the digging done
And as the company passed from the valley
Into a higher ground
The rain beat on the ridge and on the meadow
And on the mound
Until nothing was left, nothing at all
Except the body of sorrow
That rose in time
To float upon the surface of the eaten soil
And a murder of crows did circle round
First one, then the others flapping blackly down
And the carny's van still sat upon the edge
Tilting slowly as the firm ground turned to sludge
And the rain it hammered down
And no-one saw the carny go
I say it's funny how things go

Always memory of awakening in the wee hours of early dawn on a property in the Australian outback , I'd slept in a photography dark room, at a weekend gathering of punks, Goths and this classic song blaring from the outdoor speakers saturating the whole place.

it's the song that got me into them after seeing Nick Cave in that angel movie. But this comment is 3 years old and live shows aren't even a thing at the moment. Sad what the future can bring

Nick Nickson in fairness to Nick, in the recent Solo show (streamed) he was digging out some rarely heard classics and giving them a dusting off - I think he’s just as capable of rediscovering his older work and repurposing it as we hope he will. Recently he did a commentary on the murder ballads record with Blixa and Mick. So they’re clearly all in touch and happy to meet. Who knows... maybe we will see them make new music together again

OMG The Carny is one of my favorite pieces of music from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This version is the best one I've found so far. This man is such a story teller. I put him up there with Leonard Cohen.I don't see the comparison I notice comparing Cave to Tom Waits(not a fan of Waits). I see much more similarity to Cohen. I love Blixa's part in this he is so chill. I believe I see Warren Ellis on accordion and Mick Harvey as well as Conway Savage on Keyboard. This ensemble is an eerie wall of sound and Cave in the middle it's awesome. I've been listening to this man and his many incarnations and changes from about twelve years old on to now.

One wonders, Jim Morrison, had he had the time of life, would he, perhaps solo perhaps with the other Doors, ever ventured into this kinda territory? There some signs on more than one walls, like their liking for Berthold Brecht, soundscapy stuff they done like Unknown Soldier, Texas Radio, the End and so on. After all, this song came only after Nick had had a first run of genius in the Birthday Party. Morrison might ve come up with some brilliance after some pause in the Paris Jazz scene - and he might ve discovered Berlin while in Europe. If only.. Who fell off the trolley, Jim ?

I know what you mean, I suppose - when I went to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in concert, back in June, I only had eyes for him, such was his power - but I can't help but think that, if I'd been lucky enough to have seen the Bad Seeds back in the day when Blixa was with them, I would have made a point of at least stealing a few glances at Blixa. 'Cause I ADORE Blixa; oh truly I do.

I just did a video interview for Nick's new album reissues in London with Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (the artists who have been directing Nick's recent music videos). I talked about this song and Red Right Hand for ages and how it reminded me of 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Ray Bradbury - My flesh still crawls when I think about it! The Carny is one of the most inventive pieces of contemporary music out there.

Yes, this song was used in two scenes, one where the character Marion (she is a French trapeze artist in an travelling circus) plays it on her record player, and another where Nick performs it. He also performs from her to eternity in the same scene after it. It’s a really cool film, Wim Wenders is a legend (as is Nick Cave, and the Bad Seeds)
