It looked like you had cried a fair bit before filming this video. Your eyes still look teary and your voice was very shaky at parts. A truly breathtaking review.

Holy hell. I know that others have made the comparison but this really does remind me of your Blackstar review. The suit, the somber atmosphere, the shakiness of your voice. I swear that there were quite a few parts where it sounded like you were on the verge of tears (not to mention that your already beautiful eyes looked even more beautiful and teary) My personal favorite song from this album was I Need You. The 'just breathe, just breathe' part gets me everytime. If that song is on your 50 Best Songs list, I will not blame you if you start crying. Easily your best review of 2016.

Goddamn Mark. This might just be your best review in a while. I could tell that you were fighting back tears at multiple parts, especially near the end. As rsfan700 said, reviews like this and your Blackstar review are the reason why I admire you as much as I do.

I didn't even listen to the album. Not yet at least. In fact, I really know nothing about Nick Caves. Perhaps too my detriment I never seem to be able to back catalogue artists very well. as I didn't do with the new De La Souls album. But your review itself hit me. Hard. How well spoken you are and the emotion you are not afraid to show, convinced me to grab this album instantly. Incredible.

This is the most important review I've ever watched. I use the word important because I have no words to describe this review. Although I don't always agree with you. You're the reviewer who I learn the most from. You are a brilliant creator who introduces and promotes other brilliant creators. This review has me in tears. although my experience has been minimal with Nick Cave I will definitely be checking this out

its not fair to compare. they both have strengths and weaknesses.
@davidrowe762
@davidrowe762 8 лет назад
I think I like them both equally for different reasons, Fantano is definitely very knowledgable and describes his feelings extremely well but in a more light hearted and comedic way. Mark on the other and has so much passion in his presentation and the reviews themselves are almost poetic. Both great RU-vidrs!

@adamjudge7974

I think Mark is a better "critic" when it comes to analyzing music as an art form, and I definitely think he is extremely passionate, but I think Fantano listens to a wider variety of music and recommends more progressive music. I just think he has a much better taste in general. They both have pros and cons.

"It's easier to talk around this album than talk about the album itself", in the movie (one more time with feeling) that's kinda what it felt like Nick Cave was doing about his sons death. It was only directly referenced like in two-three parts of the movie.

So I've absolutely loved Southern Family after you reviewed it and gave it a 10/10. So now I have to listen to this... I'm actually super excited after coming back from Frank Ocean's album, which I gave an 8/10. Hopefully this album keeps up the good streak. I'd like to believe that outside the charts, this year has been absolutely great for music. What do you guys think?

@takeafuckingshower
@takeafuckingshower 8 лет назад
I guess we just have different tastes. By this time last year, I had changed my top 10 three times. We had Kendrick, Sufjan, Steven Wilson, Chelsea Wolfe, Grimes, Deafheaven, Algiers, The World Is a Beautiful Place, Chvrches, Julien Baker, Carly Rae Jepsen, Bjork, Vince Staples, Joanna Newsom, Courtney Barnett, Father John Misty, Jamie xx, Julia Holter, to name only a few. This year, I'm struggling to even make a top 5. The only albums that I'm really liking are Bowie, Radiohead, Car Seat Headrest, Beyonce, Frank Ocean, Nick Cave, Death Grips and Angel Olsen. And mainstream is what's on the mass media (radio, hot 100). A Bond
@abond623
@abond623 8 лет назад
takeafuckingshower I got you, I think 2013 and 2015 were good, but this year (and 2011 in resent memory) is amazing. I didn't like most of the stuff you listed for last year, I loved Deafheaven, Sufjan Stevens, Pusha-T, Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes and Vince Staples, that's about it. This year though: Bowie, Kanye, Radiohead, James Blake, Moonsorrow, Frank Ocean, The Veils, Nick Cave, Vektor, Chelsea Wolfe, Jack White's Acoustic Recordings, Swans, SubRosa, right this moment digging the new Touche Amore, and all that while Bon Iver, Alcest, and Chromatics have't even released their new albums, and at least one of them is bound to be great.

I enjoyed the album a lot on my listen, though I didn't ponder over the themes like I did with Black Star by DB. I do think a few of the instrumentals are a tad bit lifeless to be either very Droney or more melodically experimental, so the album couldn't be a 10 for me, but it's definitely one of the best of the year or at least one of my favorites and a very dark, thoughtful sit through. 9.2/10

Impolite as this may be, minding the context of it all, is this album really as great as the hype surrounding it makes it out to be? I'm just a bit dazed about the whole thing. Everybody's talking about how much of a masterpiece the album is. The hype it is getting is somewhat even more intense than in the case of Blackstar. Too much praise, it could make one cynical. To be honest, I haven't listened deeply to the album yet. I've only given it a couple of cursory listens so far. And as of now, I don't really get it.
@keturahspencer
@keturahspencer 6 лет назад
This album is an emotional punch to the gut. People don't expect that. It's intense enough that listening to it makes you feel naked. So you listen alone. Then you listen again, but give it a deeper listen, since it's too intense to take on all at once. You start to notice and appreciate things that you didn't notice before. Then, when something catastrophic happens, you go back to it, and understand in a way that you never wanted to. It's different in a genuine way. It evokes emotions like other albums don't. It doesn't sound like someone trying to comfort you. It's someone going through it with you.
