I used to think he was the "poor man's Leonard Cohen", but that was before I actually LISTENED to his music. On a dark and stormy night in New Orleans, in 1998, I saw him live for the first time. I went into that gig with no expectations and I left as a fan for life. Sometimes a certain artist (or author, song, book, film, etc) comes into your life at just the right moment, and then stays with you forever. That concert 20 years ago remains one of the best damn performances I've ever seen. And I love his music more and more as the years go by... Kind of reminds me of something Bono once said of Cohen: "He's got you when you're young, and when you're older. He's got you at all stages. He's got you when you can't face the world." The same is true of Cave. A very rare beast... like Cohen, Cash, Holiday, Nick Drake, Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey, Rufus Wainwright, a rare few others... I loved them when I was younger and full of piss and vinegar, and I'll still be listening to them when I'm in the old folks home.
He is brilliant, especially live. I saw him for the first time in Boston last year, and it was the most exhilarating concert experience of my life. He ended up jumping into the crowd and I held his hand while he supported himself above the level of the audience. At the end of the concert he pulled about 150 people on stage with him (including myself) and sang Push the Sky Away. I'll never ever forget that night.

Nick sings "every time you call around" each time in this performance. In the original classic on record he switches between "come around" and "call around" but he usually sings "call around" live. He also sings "grown sad now" not "fallen sad now". I wish people would transcribe the actual lyrics as sung, not just lazily paste them from online sources which are often wrong anyway. Nick also switches the "history" and "mystery" lines here, and doesn't sing the last verse at all. Get it right!

You want to bite into all of the goodness and richness of what is waiting to be devoured, you can't wait to chomp into the comfort, the familiarity, the nostalgia that you are anticipating... and when you finally encounter the gratification of all that has made your tummy do flip flops while you've pretended to be calm even though you want to unzip your head because you know, you fucking know that it's going to be unbelievably stupidly good, that...that my friend is what this song is about, what everything that Nick Cave is connected to is about.
