I have soft spot for Josh Lee Turner’s version. He ads just that little bit that makes the song emerge just above the really depressive level where it so easily could sit and remain. It is definitely a blues though, that’s for sure. Maybe even the definition of it 😂 Thanks to Jackson, and Nick, and now also Josh, who, counter to fashion is simply alive and kicking. 😂
@@leon723 Hmmm. I think his version is good considering it is essentially a home demo. I know Nick didn't record any covers in the studio but I'd like to hear a more together version. This sounds a bit rushed and knocked off for the sake of it. His finger picking is impeccable as ever but then he was one of the greatest finger style players of his generation and beyond. Nothing beats the original. Something about Jackson's voice and distinctive playing style. I love everything he did. Thanks
Nick Drake was obviously very influenced by Jackson C. Frank, although their singing styles differ quite a bit. It was interesting to hear Nick holding notes out like this; not his usual style. Beautiful cover. Both artists deserved all the fame and recognition in the world, yet, tragically, neither got it until after they died. RIP. Nick and Jackson.
To me, Nick and Jackson are polar opposites in feeling but identical in genius. Nick was so inward and Jackson never stopped trying to reach out. But lord, these two voices. If they were the only two I could ever hear again, I'd be content.
The original is one of my top five songs of all time. Bought the record in 1965/6 when it first came out. I still have it. Quite wonderful. Met an old friend some years ago. Hadn’t seen him in forty years. His first question was “ have you still got the Jackson C
This is a rather meta thing isn't it? Two brilliant musicians who died well before their time in relative obscurity and only received some sort of reputation following their respective deaths.
@@mywordsmyhandle I would say that's almost impossible. Perhaps he said that but then many artists say things in jest. How would someone with Elliot Smith's musical taste never come across Nick Drake.?
06/03/2024: guess I never did stop all my trying - all one can do is try harder, and slower; no sudden movements. Yesterday, getting out of the car with my brother, I got news that med school back home wants to have a word. 3 years of trying, failing, and failing again, only to so suddenly see an outstretched hand. The Finnish have a word for it: sisu. We mustn't ever stop, blues notwithstanding.
I am truly glad for you. And I agree, we must never stop trying. But I've come to understand some people just run out of everything they need to go on.
Maybe this is a little bit of synchronicity, but I was just at the store and my total came to $6.66 and the cashier wouldn't even say the number, she just turned the display my way so I could see it, and I kinda chuckled. Twenty minutes later and I'm back home, this song kinda pops into my head outta nowhere. Now I'm here and I see your comment lol. Maybe it means something, or nothing. Maybe it just means you and I have good taste in music.
