amazingly still in print you can get all three on CD..yes only three original albums. there are however posthumously released sub compilations and little music packages outtakes and demos. but you can easily get his original 3 classic catalog five leaves left bryter layter and pink moon..

A shy and troubled mind. Pity that he was overshadowed by alle the great acts that was around at the time he was alive. . He may have invented the gazing on the floor and mumbling style.

It’s good for us that Nick Drake is waiting for us to discover him when (if) we are ready and when we need him. It was a tragedy for Nick that too few people were ready for him when he was making these beautiful songs and that he was so introverted that he couldn’t get noticed on the live scene. A bitter sweet legacy that continues to grow with the passing of time.

Nick Drake, died of an overdose of antidepressant drugs in 1971. It wasn't determined if it was suicide. But he did suffer. His music reflects the melancholy beauty, tragic irony and insight into the world that he was too early to be in. He is the most beautiful spirit in music today, and this is the irony. I have all his albums. I've been listening to him since 1980, which is recent. I was 23. I'm so happy that you are appreciating him. Thank you. I adore you.

NIck's second album 'Bryter Layter' has fuller arrangements featuring the keyboard and viola skills of John Cale (for instance). This is acoustic music with an attempt to be more commercial. The album hardly sold at the time of its release, but has been re-evaluated over the decades. For me personally, it is one of the most beautiful albums ever: It's up there with 'Tapestry', 'Pet Sounds' and 'Sgt Pepper'. I hope you'll try it out! I love the fact that you enjoy the intimacy of Nick's music, including Robert Kirby's string arrangements. Kirby was a friend of Nick's from his studies in Cambridge, UK. Nick asked for Kirby to be used as his string arranger because he was dissatisfied with the work of a studio arranger. Kirby answered the call and came up with the goods! I'm so glad you're discovering Nick's music. It is timeless, agelessly beautiful.

Thanks for reacting to my suggestion. It made my morning when the video popped up in my feed. :-) I'm really glad that you enjoyed it so much, and I think you nailed it with your analysis. For me the real joy of his music was his ability to craft songs of gentle introspection, that were wistful, but without being maudlin, and that's a really fine line to tread. That and of course his killer guitar playing, which was never showy, but was technically sublime. Anyone who's ever picked up a guitar will appreciate just how great he was. Thanks again man, and have a great day. :-)

Yeah. Someone reacting to Nick Drake. Nick is amazing. Try 'Place to Be', 'Road', 'Which Will', 'Fruit Tree' and 'Northern Sky' The whole Pink Moon album is a experience. Everyone should hear it at least once. It's just Nick and his guitar, except for a few notes from a piano on the title track. No orchestration. It's so stark and beautiful. Nick's song's are used a lot in movies. Not these tho.

When I was diving to various styles of guitar playing, Nick Drake's name was mentioned as a person to study. In some circles ND was regarded as beyond his years musically for someone so young. I remember seeing a documentary about him, regarding depression and he hated being in the spotlight. I got the feeling he couldn't handle the pressures of fame and withdrew to his parents home. Soon after he OD'd at the young age of 26. Unfortunately I never dove into his music, but I think after listening to these song, it's worth a look see.

It was more that fame eluded him, he went by practically ignored until after his death, his depression at his lack of recognition spiralled, he came to hate playing live too as people would just chat away and not really listen, also he had to retune his guitar for different songs which made him uneasy in front of impatient audiences, sometimes he'd just up and leave, his producer/label owner Joe Boyd tried to get him to tour/promote his work but he just couldn't bring himself to, posthumously he took the world by storm, tragic stuff

@@JustJP Nick Drake life's story is also extremely moving - such a shame it was so short. Once you get acquainted with his three studio albums (of which Pink Moon is my personal favorite), I'd suggest listening to "Family Tree" featuring snippets of various home recordings, including his mom(!) singing/playing a charming little tidbit of a song. It offers a clear, intimate and personal description of who he really was. There are also a some good Nick Drake documentaries on RU-vid ("A Skin too Few", "A Stranger Among Us", "Nick Drake- Kaleidescope", "The Parts You Don't Hear", "Now We Rise and We Are Everywhere" etc.) that include interviews with, among others, his sister, who was apparently a relatively successful actor back in the day. Damn, sublime is best way I can sum up Nick Drake's musicianship.

The first time I heard Nick Drake, on an Island Records sampler LP in 1971, I was speechless too, so you can be forgiven for your temporary failure to articulate your thoughts. The song on that album was Northern Skies (which I'm sure you will have heard by now), but I soon discovered that every song of his was of equal quality. I liked them both. Chill. First listen for me, too. There's an old 80s new wave artist named Robyn Hitchcock who had some success with his band The Egyptians. He did a solo acoustic LP in late 80s/early 90s called "Eye". Most songs feature just one guitar and his singing, but there are some accents, and a few feature piano accompanying. He is a good guitarist and an interesting singer/lyricist, but his songwriting keep the songs interesting and in need of nothing else. I suggest you listen to "Raining Twilight Coast" or the one guitar instrumental "Chinese Water Python". Great reaction.

An amazing guitarist from Fairport convention Richard Thompson played on tracks with drake, my favorite being the alternate version of thoughts of Mary Jane that was released on made to love magic compilation album in 2004 which is an awesome album with gems like tow the line, Drake's last song recorded. But his last 5 recorded songs after pink moon are some of my favorite even though his illness was affecting him so much by then he could not play and sing at the same time which was seemingly unheard of for Nick. Previously he had performed perfectly and almost effortlessly, every time. The whole album is worth checking out. Black eyed dog, hanging on a star, voices, joey. Some remasters

Excellent, excellent. There are several fantastic Nick Drake songs waiting for you... You should also definitely lend an ear to John Martyn who developed a quite jazzy type of singer-songwriter folk and was not only a virtuoso on the acoustic, but also one of the first in the genre to experiment with delay-effects etc. The title track of his best-known album 'Solid Air' is dedicated to Drake as they were friends, but almost polar opposites in character. While Drake was the introvert shy lowner, Martyn was (despite his own demons and troubled soul) funny and full of life and spirit on stage (and unfortunately also an alcoholic)...

Nick Drake's music, what little there is of it, is a gift that never grows old or tiring. The intricate guitar playing, the hushed vocals, the orchestral parts and the overall style all combine to take you away somewhere. All three albums are excellent though I prefer the first "Five Leaves Left" and third "Pink Moon". Some of his non-album material is gorgeous too "Clothes of Sand", "Time of no Reply", "Hanging on a Star" and "Black Eyed Dog" to name a few. I've taken a look through your videos and you listen to stuff that no-one else goes near, Pentangle for example are something I never though I'd see someone reacting to. Try some Lal Waterson material for some more English Folk influenced music, perhaps "Memories", "Some Old Salty" or "How Can I Leave" for starters. Also the album she did with her brother Mike, "Bright Phoebus" is considered a Folk-Rock gem but is hardly known by people generally. Try "Child Among The Weeds", "Fine Horseman" or the closing title track on there.

Cello Song was heard when Jake Gyllenhaal commits suicide in the Jennifer Aniston movie from 2002 the good girl. Nick is also been heard along with his track northern sky in the movie Serendipity with John Cusack. and the 1st track of This Album Time has told Me can be found in that awful they call it the reuniting or speed with Keanu and Sandra Bullock the lake house. it plays in that. and if you were in America you might remember way back around the turn of the century there was a Volkswagen ad that played pink moon you can also find that on RU-vid..

Expected a much deeper voice until I realized that it's Nick Drake, not Nick Cave... Terribly boring to me. Not a fan of this folky introspective acoustic music. These two sound kinda twee and/or cheesy. Yes, I know it's supposed to be a contrast...don't care. You know by now that I also don't care too much for lyrics (at first), so that could never make me ignore that I don't like the, well, music? What music is all about...it's in the name? Beyond the music, I guess it depends on the voice most of all. The only time I ever liked this was Dana Falconberry or a few songs of Conor Oberst / Bright Eyes. Funny enough, I didn't like the latter, at first. He does a Bob Dylan impression and makes it more whiny. And I still don't like most of the songs. But I recommend the Bright Eyes song At The Bottom Of Everything. That song just works for me, all the way. Great delivery. It's very Neutral Milk Hotel, I guess. Who I don't like too much. Another good song of the same album is First Day of My Life.
