Nick Drake was only with us for a brief time but is music is immersive. He's another one of those musical artists where you don't just listen to a song. You journey across his artistic landscape. I can't just put on one song of his. He always becomes a journey. Nick Drake is comfort music for me.

I first heard Nick's music in a record store back in the early '90s. I was blown away and quickly ordered a box set of all four of his albums-- three released while he was living, one posthumously. They are all worth hearing, but the first three are masterpieces, and they are best heard in full, and in chronological order of release, in my opinion. "Five Leaves Left," "Bryter Layter," and "Pink Moon." All incredible.

The only artist I’ve ever felt comfortable enough to call a singular favourite, as he’s just incredible in all regards. He’s one of the most unique, phenomenal guitar players to have ever lived… I would definitely encourage you to listen to everything he’s done (When you’re able to get around to it, of course), especially this entire album, which I think would be a great start. Thanks for listening to this song : )

Four magnificent albums. Up there at the top for me is River Man, probably one of the most amazing string arrangement written for a folk-pop song. Back in the 70's, i was a big John Martyn & Fairport Convention fan, and was totally unaware of him. I didn't know Martyn and Richard Thompson were friends of his, and that Martyn's gorgeous Solid Air was written for/about Nick. I discovered him in the mid 90's and couldn't understand, reading the liner notes and seing who played with him, how i could not have heard of him.

I had never heard of Nick Drake until I saw this on your channel. It's hard to believe his music didn't achieve success during his time, and also so very sad. This is a beautiful song, full of soul and sadness. I did a little research on him, and I am so intrigued. I was able to find a biography simply entitled Nick Drake the biography by Patrick Humphries. MOJO called it "An exquisite portrait". I can't wait to read it. I also added Five Leaves Left, his first album, to what will be my Nick Drake collection. The song "Three Hours" is so beautiful. It has the same feeling as this song, but it's over 6 minutes. Thank you, Daniel for introducing me to Nick Drake, and thanks to the person who introduced him to you.

I've been listening to Nick Drake since 1980 and I never tire of his music. Wait till you hear some of his fingerpicking songs, he is a masterful player and songwriter! I played and sang the song "Northern Sky" to my husband when we were dating. It has never been proven whether his death was intentional or accidental. So sad that he left this world so young, yet he lives on in his beautiful music and in the hearts of his fans and loved ones. Thanks for reacting to this and I hope you listen to all his music!! ❤️❤️

☯ In my opinion, the best song on this LP is "Things Behind The Sun." The music is easily as important as the lyrics. It's about the Yin & Yang of despair and hope. Several measures of disconcerting minor chords, followed by several measures of reassuring major chords, then once again, minor and finally, ending on a hopeful major motif. As for Nick Drake recommendations in general, for me, the following four tracks are absolute religious experiences (and amazing headphone trips): At The Chime Of A City Clock River Man Way To Blue Time Of No Reply (orchestrated version off of the "Made To Love Magic" CD). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pi84fEF_kWs.html

Great choice. Drake was miles ahead of his time. I encourage you to listen to all his three albums. Another song that presages his end is "Fruit Tree," off his Five Leaves Left debut album. One other direction you can go from Nick is to listen to one of the guitarists on his albums, Richard Thompson, who's still playing.

I saw the documentary on him (from 2001 i believe), and as he didn't leave a suicide note, it was never officially determined that he did commit suicide. An accidental overdose was considered a likely possibility. Many people in the early 70's had huge problems with prescribed anti-depressants, some caused even worst conditions.

My favorite Drake song is "From The Morning". I had never heard of him before and a random AT&T commercial had a 20 second clip of From The Morning in it and I've been in love with his melancholy lyrics, quiet voice and crazy string breaking tunings that create such a unique beautiful sound out of dead guitar strings. I could listen to his playing all day. BTW A great song from the 80's "Life In A Northern Town" from a band called Dream Academy is a really nice tribute to Nick Drake. Not many people know it was written for/about him unless they research it.

Genuinely there was no one like Nick -wayyyy ahead of his time. Please do more of his stuff, Day is Done, From The Morning, Place To Be, Hazey Jane 1&2, One Of These Things First… his library is small but overflowing with gems. His songs feel incredibly personal, as though you came across his diary and it’s pages are the music. Adding to the unique feel of the music is the enigma of Drake himself, and the fact that no video footage of him exists. It imbues his music with a sense of mystery.

I just finished watching NicknLex full album listen to Pink Moon on Patreon and saw you had uploaded this! I guess it’s a Pink Moon kinda night for me, which is totally fine. 💗 This album is his most stripped down of the three, but you definitely should check out all of them. He was known for using alternate tunings and his own self taught picking style. (I’m going to refer back to my recommendation for Scarypoolparty here who also uses alternate tunings and very unique self taught picking.) There is a musician named Joshua Lee Turner that devotes a YT video just to Nick’s guitar playing, equipment, tunings, etc. He’s figured out everything from the brand of strings to the length of his nails. It’s pretty interesting.
