Nick Drake "Northern Sky" Guitar Lesson in Drop-D Tuning

NOTE: skip to 2:25 to hear me playing the song in open D tuning first and then go back to the beginning for info on the chords I am using.
Nick Drake plays this song in an open tuning and others here on RU-vid have provided great lessons on how to play it in Nick's tuning. I find this drop-D tuning works well if you want to include the song in your repertoire, but don't want to change from standard tuning - other than dropping the low E string down to D. The focus here is on the chords and changes and not the strumming. This is my first time putting up a lesson type video, so if I have missed something or you have a question please make a comment and I will respond. Cheers, Tim

Thanks Tim that really simplified it for me making easier to play and sing. What a great song hey? It's amazing to find these buried treasures from artists that left this planet so long ago only to find melodies and lyrics that move us musicians to want to rekindle that horn on high. Thanks Tim. One thing: With Drop-D tuning, if you do capo at 1st fret, it sounds precisely in tune with the album version of "Northern Sky." I'm using my 12-string, so I'm always down a half-step as my default tuning, so if you're in standard Drop D, capo on the 1st fret should put you in tune with the album version. I"m on capo 2nd given my half step tuning. No matter, if you want to match the album key, that's the easy way to do it. I also figured out that little piano phrase that Cale throws in towards the end: a descending phrase starts I think on high E string at 5th or 4th fret, then just walk it down (to 2nd fret) and and on B string 2nd fret, you'll figure it out, it's easy.

@@gillian3708 Anytime! It's not that super complicated compared to most of Nick's music, at least, and this tuning makes it easier, of course. Normally it just makes it harder. (such as "Three Hours" etc.)

I know it’s a 4 year old video, but.. always start with a brief demo of the song so people know whether they’re learning what they actually want to learn. In this case you did a great job and this is exactly what I was hoping it would be. Often that’s not the case though and you can wind up browsing through a dozen videos and scrolling to random timestamps trying to find what you’re looking for

Sorry to say I have no formal music expertise and not really sure what strumming pattern I am doing. Having played since I was ( I just go by the feel of it. I also apologize for not having my right hand pictured in the video so you can at least see my strumming. If I figure it out I will add a comment here. Thanks.

The strumming pattern I do roughly goes like this: down (small pause) up down down (small pause) up down down down. I use the edge of my thumb to strum the strings very gently since I like the way it sounds.

Very nice, I love exotic tunings but there is usually a way to play things in standard or drop d and it sounds as good or better. Like dylans blood on the tracks album , all r songs in open d/e or standard they are both good

Yeah, I didn’t show my right hand and I play by ear so I’d have a hard time explaining the pattern. I just go with the feeling of the song.
