This lesson was inspired my Nick Drake's "One Of These Things First." There's gorgeous open tuned sus2 and 6th chords in that piece, which led me to construct this exercise.

Lovely lesson. I've realised I'm much more drawn to folk style/fingerpicking guitar than solos. It's mesmerising finding open chord voicings that give you chills - and just knowing a tiny bit of musical theory makes it much easier. Cheers!

Although... as I checked out more vids... did he actually play anything in open D? No issues since I already used it as my fave slide tuning, but I was kind of hoping I could use it to learn some of his pieces?
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 6 лет назад
Good point! "One of These Things First" is in Open E, which you could achieve by capoing up 2 frets. Also, all of Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" record is in Open D capo 2. "Pink Moon" and "Parasite" are in Open C. "River Man" and "Things Behind the Sun" are standard :-)
@thecaveofthedead

Thanks! Definitely much more to open D than I thought from my Elmore James experience. Also hoping to get an EHX pitchfork for a variety of reasons - but it'll be pretty cool on slide to instantly switch between E and D. Anyway thanks again for this lesson. Your lessons are some of the most rut-busting on youtube.

This is a good lesson, especially if you're going after His ( Nick's) style as opposed to trying to trying to sound just like him. Since Nick wrote a lot of songs on a classical, give that a whirl too.

This gave me a glimpse of Nick Drake's thought process when he came up with those haunting guitar parts. Thanks so much Eric! Please make lessons on Nick Drake's songs. There are precious few quality lessons on his songs made by people like Gareth Evans. My personal request is 'Hanging On A Star' (the Open C version in "Made To Love Magic"). Thanks again!

I dig it man. I really enjoy the way you lead with practical application and then branch out into general application of the techniques/ideas for different use cases. Making it generally applicable and easily built upon. The only thing more inspiring than your playing is your method. I’m in the middle of an epic binge. Netflix has nothing on you. Thanks.

Dude thanks so much man! I've got an old ex-hippie jazz drummer teacher friend who laid some wisdom on me years ago. He was like, "You can either learn songs, or you can learn the INSTRUMENT." I think about that whenever I share something on here - for me, it's never enough to just show the movements, I try to go a step further and get to the true source. The ideas!

You are right! And I find it fascinating that he was so inspired by his mom! I've never heard of such thing on other artists. I mean, it's not a direct benefit in general terms, but it's surprising, to say the least, that his inspiration (not all, obviously) came from such a close source isn't it? :) His mom wrote beautiful melancholic piano songs, and her voice was very interesting also.
