Ahh, this all comes together and makes sense to me. Bretz noted that the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge was softer and this is what he meant, I’d forgotten. Hope I'm not driving on 84 or 14 when it happens again! thanks for the reminder.
I was hoping that there would be mention of the possibility that the great quake dated just previous to the 1700 quake could have caused the break, and there was. Other reputable sources have suggested that the lake was only 200 feet deep before the breech occurred.
