It’s obvious that he’s really gorgeous physically, but this is an incredibly intelligent man and that should be acknowledged to the fullest extent. He was only 22 in this interview but he managed to carry on an eloquent, meaningful conversation about a subject that people really respect. It’s pretty extraordinary that someone that age could have so such insight on something like that and that’s extremely impressive. I just love it when beautiful people turn out smart!
I agree , if that was so I would be married by now . 😆Guys that I know in thier early twenties act like middle schoolers , they don't have any class . 😑
I agree! As I was watching this I was thinking I could watch him forever and this is probably one of my favorite interviews ever. He is so well spoken for so young!
I could listen to Nick read the telephone book (not that those still exist, but you get my point). Such class and elegance. You can tell, in just the way he talks here, that he truly feels glamorous. Lol.
Unlike today, not everyone at his age then say “like” every 5 seconds. I was fortunate enough to meet him at the Fillmore in SF ten years ago. Really nice to the fans.
OH...MY...GAWD!!!! HE IS THE MOST GORGEOUS, INTELLIGENT, TALENTED, CREATIVE, ARTISTIC, AND SEXIEST MAN...EVER!!! THOSE BEAUTIFUL GREEN EYES....THOSE SEXY LIPS....THAT GORGEOUS HAIR!!!! LOVE YOU NICK...AND STILL DO!!! THE 80'S WERE THE BEST!!!
Yes "GEORGIE"..... You remember!!! How many pics did I show you of this gorgeous creature back in the day? (and how many more were on my bedroom walls....heehee) Ahhh....what memories!!! 😄
Now being around his age in this video (Nick's almost 22 here) and Duran Duran members' age in their beginnings, I begin to realize even more how well spoken they were in such young years, they knew exactly what they were doing and where they wanted to go musically and as a famous band. People often forget Simon was the only one in his early twenties when they began as Duran. Every member, wether they parted or came back to DD, are incredibly talented and intelligent and they were often put aside as the "pretty pinup boys" which is sad. Not only do they look amazing and presented themselves this well they also were and are really good at what they're doing. ❤️❤️❤️
Well done interview, Nick! So polite, diplomatic and thoughtful with his responses. I agree with him regarding bands who put on interesting, artistic stage performances versus bands that just get up on a stage and play. If a band plays excellent music, I will go see them play live even if they are just standing on stage playing their instruments with no additional visual performance. However, my favorite concerts are shows that are more like theatrical performances. I like the visual special effects and light shows synced to the music, along with any kind of artistic expression from the band. Especially when the band's artistic expression enhances and gives more meaning to the songs. Also of course when the band's music is danceable, that makes a show even more fun. Which Duran Duran is very good at - both danceable music and performance art. Thank you Nick for staying true to the kind of music you like to create and play! :)
I was a huge fan of Duran Duran in the 80's. Still have a few faves of theirs. Huge crush on Nick for years. Him and his Roland just magic. The chauffeur is an awesome song!
Now I realize after more than 30 years, it has always been Nick when it comes to doing solo interviews. Must be because of his eloquence and articulation, not to mention his knowledge as well. It was so well mannered of Nick to mention "I'll start that again..." before rephrasing his comments
Nick Rhodes always had style, and was always very cool, specially in the 80s when there was so much awesome creative fashion, and self expression around.
Nick Rhodes is a great keyboardist, and he reminds me alot of David Sylvain. He was the lead singer of the late 70,s very early 80's band Japan for the ones that haven't heard of him.👍
Obviously Nick Rhodes was highly aware of and knew DS. I read a quote from David Sylvian saying something to the effect.. "there appears to be a movement passing through at the moment which we (the band Japan) are being associated with but are not", as he must have been referring to the New Romantic movement and trying to distance the band. Who talks like that?! That's being eloquent, and you can see Nick here has that same well spoken delivery.
Yes 22 and very thoughtful with his choice of words and clearly an enlightened guy. These days any late teens/ early 20s X factor dimwit starts every sentence with “yeah, but no, but yeah”
Nick Rhodes was always dismissed as a poser and someone incredibly uptight and frivolous in interviews but in fact, he's a great synth player (incredible textures) with probably a generous IQ (+130 easily), the mastermind behind every DD album
+Steve Steele I don't have an answer but it's just funny to me that you commented this on this video, because there's a person who takes interviews of 80's musicians, makes them into animated GIFs but puts false subtitles on them, and they used these clips to make a fake interview Nick saying that David had once accused him of stealing his look, that they took it to the pit, and there was "quite a bit of bloodshed." I do think so though, as an avid fan of both Japan and DD I think there's definitely an influence, but I've watched a lot of interviews from DD and I've never heard them say anything about Japan. It's interesting what Asko said that Japan was recording Polaroids while DD was doing their first album, because a lot of fans that Japan and DD share often say that DD's first record sounds a lot like Japan. It was their first record, they were young, and as an artist myself, early on in your career, you tend to draw heavily from what's around you until you grow and find your own voice. (Sorry this is long and probably doesn't answer your question...)
I think so...and even with Japan, you can't praise them and then slam DD for ripping them off (not saying anyone was, I just see a lot of people doing this)...Japan did the same thing when they were first starting out. Before they found their voice, their look, their sound, even their names were heavily influenced by The New York Dolls. Marc Bolan was heavily influenced by Bob Dylan when he started out, and Bob Dylan was a total ripoff of Woody Guthrie. That's just how it works. Before those musicians all found their own unique sounds, they were inspired by someone before them, and drew from them for inspiration, heavily at first, and less and less until they found their own voice. All artists do this, whether they admit it or not. (Sorry I can't stop talking I'm really passionate about both DD and Japan)
***** Oh yeah I know, I wasn't accusing anyone here of badmouthing DD, but I have seen it just...around the internet on other videos and stuff. But isn't is brilliant? I'm not fond of contemporary music, and DD is my favorite band too so the fact that their whole point is to stay relevant (and therefore contemporary) I'm always a little scared but...they never let me down. I hope it does well for them. I've not been able to stop listening to it it's absolutely genius.
I agree, Steve. I think DD were heavily influenced by Japan. They wanted David Sylvian to produce their first album, but he refused. It is very evident that Nick has a lot of the David Sylvian look in his ever changing style. Nick is always changing his look, his hair color, and his wardrobe style, just as David S. did. I think it's great because so few men are willing to do that. I have never heard any DD members mention this in interviews, nor have I ever heard David S. asked anything about DD is his interviews.
Honestly I haven't seen a lot of people being able to go on in interviews for this long and actually make sense up until the very end, he is very articulate and intelligent as well, much respect.
I've followed Duran Duran since their early days, and this is the first interview with Nick that I have heard. He really is well versed and mature for a 22 year old. I got a great lesson on the progression of music in England.
Today, most people this age barely talk intelligently. With the types of music out now, the personalities. ? Is that what it is ? There isn’t a lot to talk about. It isn’t all about how much trouble you can get into, though it seems that is all music consists of now. A far drop in the wrong direction , if you ask me. And I am a Gen X member.
When I was in my teens, I wanted to be him ( or "like" him ). I am now in my fifties and still feel the same way. There is something about living true to yourself that is very appealing. Pardon me while I go to the vanity and smudge on a little eyeliner. Wink.
Nick Rodes, remarcable musician. At the time of this video he was very young. However very wise and knowledgeable. Besides, I love the fact that he is almost 55 now and he still wears make up. Because is his personal preference.
Can't be 1984. This has to be early 1986, I'm thinking March or April. Nick refers to Arcadia, Power Station and the film "Back to the Future". Also, Nick had black hair during late 1985/February 1986 for Arcadia. His hair would be a lot shorter and very blonde by October '86 during the "Notorious" album release and promo videos.
This interview Was recorded the 4th og november 1985 Rights When arcadia and powerstation was stopping and Nick dyed his Black long hair back to blond Brown ish Right before he cuttet it short
Yes 86. Nick by this time had dyed his long black hair a honey brown color as seen in "The Flame" video. Always...loved that shirt! Clips of this interview were used in a fashion documentary about music aired on MTV that year...
Nick Rhodes a ROCK STAR?? Lol. Dunno about being a rock star but he is clearly brilliant. I believe he revolutionized the music we hear today for sure. I always said I would have loved to see Nick Rhodes and Prince collaborate on something......🦋
Loved DURAN DURAN and still do....They were on the forefront of 1980s videos....Amazing band. Got to finally see them at a 1980s "bands" concert in Devore Ca in I believe 2005 or 2006. Boy.... was it emotional for me to see my D.D. after sooooo many yrs later. They were amazing!!!
Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music really laid the best groundwork for DuranDuran and so many others. I don't see much Bowie in DD. Ferry also set the model for being into art, pop art, arti history, theatricality. Bower was influenced by Roxy more than the other way around at all. DuranDuran were also highly, highly influenced by David Sylvian and his band Japan. Clearly.
This interview took place at a time that was pre-dumbed down, before social media and short attention spans, and when people could string a few words together to formulate a sentence. Lol!
I had the same thought. I was confused when he said "techno rock." To me, techno is stuff like Gary Numan. Maybe "techno" is a British term for prog rock.
He's so intelligent and well spoken, he created the look of the 80s in my book. He broke stereotypes and was woke before others and he helped break open closed mindedness and helped so many to be free with themselves to express themselves through fashion and in general . This man made the sound of the 80s he has a great musical knowledge truly has shaped music through the years he's highly underated and under appreciated for all he's done.
