last team to win back to back was 2011-2012 Alabama. 2012 was heartbreaker for Georgia fans. no playoff meant losing the SEC to Bama allowed the winner to steamroll Notre Dame(one of the game announcers in the title game said the real national championship was played in Atlanta). the defensive coordinator for Bama was Kirby Smart and that is my favorite story line going into the national championship.

That is my thought, too; Saban's dominance will end when he decides to retire from coaching for good. Even if Alabama had an off year this year, they will still return to the CFP and have an excellent chance to win the Natty again next season. Every time a program has an off year, people in media immediately jump to clickbait, saying the now boring roundabout headline, "Is this the end of such program's and or coach's dominance?" Only for such a program led by the said coach to come back next year and win it all, shutting up all the detractors again. Rome (Alabama) will fall when the Emperor (Saban) chooses to part from the such post. It is simple as that.

As someone who came of age during the 80s and 90s LSU to me was nothing more than an average program who turned out some good pros on occasion. Never thought of them and now like you said, it's hard to think of the best college football programs with some of the best players and best resources without mentioning LSU.

Yeah. If he played in the Gretzky era or now, there's no telling what he would've done. He played in the absolute toughest era for offense and still put up great numbers for several years.

They'd all deny it, but I think a lot of NFL peoples believed in the "Jeff Tedford Curse" back then. Teams were looking at Aaron Rodgers and seeing Kyle Boller instead. Maybe i'm giving the Nicktator too much credit, but if he was confused by NFL scouting and the college draft, maybe it actually is a crapshoot!

It’s almost like something changed in between, like being vetoed on getting Drew Brees.

Definitely a bad moment for him but also the correct decision. Not sure there was a great way for him to handle that situation but he certainly didn't handle it well.

One reason I don’t think Saban is the greatest coach ever. If he doesn’t have most of the top recruits, pay the players like he’s done in the past and everything going his way, he’s just an average coach. No but he was still growing as a coach and when he came aboard Michigan State was also on probation for a lot of violations that happened prior to his tenure. They hadn't had a winning season since 1990 and Saban was their defensive coordinator in 1987 when they won a Rose Bowl. He may not have won titles there but he also took over during a difficult time period and they got better under his tenure after several bad years and NCAA sanctions.

@@jamesmarshall6619 They had about the same record under Perles from 1992 to 1994 - 6-6, 5-6, 6-6. Then under Saban they went 6-5-1, 6-6, 7-5 6-6, and then finally in 99 they go 10-2. Then after he left they go 5-6, 7-5, 4-8. So if he really made MSU better, then why did he have the same record as the previous coach the first three years and then after 1 good year he leaves they go back to being trash. How did he really make the program better?

@@jca6682 because when you're under sanctions and they reduce scholarships it's not easy to maintain anything nor build anything yet they maintained and finally had a great final year despite a lack of commitment by the program at that time . The talent they had his last year was very good, he recruited well, they were in a much better place, it's not his fault they hired a terrible head coach in Bobby Williams. That's not a Saban problem, that's an MSU making a poor hire and wasting the talent that was on the team. Those teams had talent, they had multiple players get drafted in the following two years after Saban left from classes he recruited, Saban can't overcome the incompetence of another head coach. Which again speaks to his level of coaching, he took over a program hit by sanctions, they didn't crater, they saw an increase in talent, broke through, left the program in a better place with NFL talent on the roster (something like 9 or 10 guys got drafted in 2001 and 2002 from classes he recruited) during an era where the Big Ten was arguably the best conference at the time and the subsequent guy did a poor job.

Clearly Nick Saban liked what he saw in Drew Brees but a failed physical and settling with Daunte Culpepper later led to leaving Miami.

@@Miller2h41 Saban says in his documentary that he hated that in the NFL your success was so reliant on finding a QB and when he was overruled on Brees he decided he’d coach the last year of his contract and move on. Alabama opportunity just fell into his lap. Another big part of Sabans legacy in Miami is his impact on Jason Taylors career. His 3-4 defensive scheme led to record breaking seasons as edge rusher and catapulted him into one of the best DE’s of all time. Jason Taylor attributed his increase in production to Sabans switch to 3-4 and Bill Belichick of all people who called Taylor and explained the pros of a 3-4 and assured him this change benefited him more than anyone.

Belichicks last year with Browns were one of the favorites in 95 until owner announced 1/3 thru the season he was moving franchise out of Cleveland and most of the staff wouldn’t be retained. Yet people are under the impression Bill failed in Cleveland. Dolphins haven’t won a playoff game in quite awhile yet Saban “sucked” in Miami taking over a 4-12 team going 9-7 with Gus Ferotte then a broken down Culpepper and an owner insisting they take a safety in first round of draft and Hagan over Brandon Marshall. Until the owner stops meddling everyone will fail in Miami.
