But isn't the solution to tell him how to play? Jon would've won anyways, even if he had told him how to land, simply because he had known about it longer. But that way, Arin is happy, even though inevitably it makes no difference.
@MacGuffinExMachina
@MacGuffinExMachina 7 лет назад
Hazard, Jon is most certainly not blatantly correct. First off, I think context matters. This is a game between friends. The point of that is fun. To have fun in a slightly competitive setting like this isn't about winning, but an evenly matched challenge. Winning the way Jon did was petty. It made for a predictable and boring round.

I'm with Jon here. If Arin wanted both to know the controls then they should have looked them up before starting the VS. To use his analogy it's like two boxer who don't know how to punch are thrown into the ring. They both initially just start rubbing and gyrating on eachother until one of them figures out how to move their arm in a punch-like motion. Is it his responsibility to then teach his opponent how to punch? Me no thinky so.
@regularsharp
@regularsharp 9 лет назад
No. Analogies are nice, but there's no perfect analogy for this. The goal here isn't "which guy can find out how to work the game faster than the other." It's "who can play the game better". To that end, a sharing of information when learning to play the game is only fair when they're both playing for the first time. Arin has a point.

@MartKencuda
@MartKencuda 9 лет назад
gorrillawarfair I'm assuming both boxers had no prior concept of motor skills. Boxer 2 would know that punching is possible, but he doesn't quite know what to tell his arm to do in order to make a punch happen. Think of his brain as the controller and his arm as the thing on screen. Which signals does he send to move his arm like his opponent? (Why the fuck am I going on about this?)

I think it boils down to this: Is learning what button to press and when while actively engaged in the competition part of the game itself, or is it part of learning the rules and controls before the game meaningfully begins? If it's the former, I would say Jon is right. In this case, the competition started as soon as they started sending inputs against each other. There was no tutorial phase intended to teach the players how to control their character, so one could argue figuring out the controls was intended to be part of the competition. If it's the latter, Arin is right. So, the game is immediately unfair to both, since it gave no effort to teach the basic controls. If you are thrown into baseball, and you don't know what the bases are for, then you aren't even playing the game. If Jon figures out what they're for through external validation but Arin doesn't, then Jon is playing and Arin isn't. Therefor, any wins Jon gets over Arin is more akin to winning when you're the only one who showed up. Arin is expecting a level of initial information sharing about basic controls until they can have a game that tests their ability to correctly time said controls. Is it fair to allow individually learning the controls through trial and error to be a part of the competition?
@kaelykopis5836
@kaelykopis5836 4 года назад

@yukicocoa5435
@yukicocoa5435 3 года назад
Close but no Plain and simple: in a competition you do not help your opponent in any way. If he's competing while not knowing what he's supposes to do, too bad, easy victory for you. If it was just two friends playing a game then you would expect to share tips and I guess basic controls. Arin seems to think when it's convenient for him GG VS is just two friends playing a game at the same time, while Jon actually knew what the Versus meant
@reedpratt1985
@reedpratt1985 3 года назад
I'd say the baseball analogy is poor still because it's much harder to accidentally do the right thing in an actual sport whereas in a video game "reality" is programmed to force you into following the rules. A better analogy would be if Arin knew all the rules of baseball, but couldn't figure out how to swing the bat. Which if Jon didn't know how to swing a bat prior to starting play but figured it out, I'd posit that it's perfectly reasonable to withhold a small, simple piece of information like that. If they both go in blind, they both accept the risks associated with going in blind and shouldn't expect anyone to bail them out imo. If Jon had more information going into this than Arin then I'd say he was being a dick. But neither of them knew the controls. His professional boxer analogy is also stupid, Jon is not a professional nickelodeon guts player, nor did he have ANY ADDITIONAL knowledge of the game over Arin. The only saving grace for Arin is that this is just two dudes chilling and having fun but uh...it's a youtube video, wouldn't it be boring if he just told you and you both went silent and just tried really hard?

i think any argument for Arin loses its value once the control command that Jon was doing was revealed. it was literally just press down. you can complain to your rival all you want, not gonna automatically give you any reason or anything, but at least before doing that please try to press all the buttons on your controller.
@thebroken0wastaken
@thebroken0wastaken 3 года назад
They both started with the same information. Jon figured out how to land back earlier than Arin. that does give Jon an advantage, but Jon earned that advantage.That doesn't make it unfair. One could even phrase it as Arin earned his disadvantage. So while technically Jon was correct, he probably should have just given up the information once Arin's attitude suffered so gravely. Competition is all well and good, but not if relationships suffer.

MAN, that's the exact same thing i'm thinking all the time when watching arin and dan play. Arin's just talking shit all the time, being passive aggressive to Dan and he just takes it without doing anything. I think that's because Dan's just a really chill person in general who doesn't let get anything to him but it makes Arin so cocky that he talks shit all the time. I don't know if it just the new paring or something but Arin got so terribly unsymphatic in the recent time which makes me pretty sad because i was really big fan of him back in the days. Nowadays i just feel he's a big douche who takes himself too important.

I disagree, the problem is Jon and Arin were both getting their metaphors wrong, it's like Muhammad Ali competing against a person who has not yet learned how to box and is entirely incapable of fighting, you may as well be playing singleplayer if one only of the players actually has the capacity to compete, it's like playing two player against a controller that's just sitting on the floor. If the question was ethically SHOULD Jon tell Arin what the controls were, the answer would be no. If the question was in order to compete SHOULD Jon tell Arin what the controls were, the answer would be no. If the question was Did Jon not telling Arin what the controls were make for a funny episode, the answer is yes..

I'm gonna vouch with Arin for this. The way I see it, there were two "games" going on. The first game is "Figure out the Controls" and the second was "The Actual Game". To play the second, you have to beat the first. The second game counts for points, and is based off skill. The first game does not matter and is worth nothing, and is based on trial, error and luck. Now, Jon beat the first game before Arin, meaning he could now play the second. Instead of helping Arin beat the first game, he decided to start the second game without him, getting a head start, and thus more points before Arin could, giving himself an advantage. At this point, even if Arin beat the first game on his own, he wouldn't be able to win anyway because Jon would always have more points. Thus, Arin lost because Jon didn't help him beat a game that didn't matter and was worth no points. Had Jon helped Arin beat the first game, they could have started the second game, the one that was worth points and actually mattered, equally. Jon is a butt.

The fact that people are still commenting on and debating this warms my heart. Also, I already reached my conclusion years ago: Jon and Arin started with the same information. Jon figured out how to do something that Arin didn't. Since this was a versus - aka, an episode where they're actually competing - Jon is not obligated to tell Arin of info he discovers himself. However, that doesn't mean it's the _friendliest_ thing to do. Not helping your opponent in a competition is expected and you shouldn't fault someone for it, while helping them is exceptional and good sportsmanship. Basically, Jon's decision to not share info was acceptable and fair, but it wasn't good sportsmanship. And conversely, Arin's rage was very unsportsmanlike, but also understandable.

Okay so here's the thing. In literally every other session of Grumps VS, when playing a new game, the two of them take time to figure out the controls. In fighting games if one of them asks what the block or throw button is, the other will tell them. In quiz games where you have to buzz in, if one asks HOW to buzz in, the other will tell them. While there is usually an element of individual exploration and experimentation, there's also usually a tacit understanding that more fun can be had if they both understand the game and are playing at least something approaching their best. By refusing to share knowledge with Arin, Jon explicitly changed the dynamic in an unnecessarily competitive way. I won't say Jon was 'wrong' not to tell Arin how to play the game, but Arin WAS completely justified in his anger given that Jon rather abruptly changed the entire atmosphere from meaningless friendly fun to something actually competitive with absolutely no forewarning at all.

You no nothing of this sport in this scenario, and for explanation purposes you are playing croquet. You are given your mallet and you horse. No information is given to you... How do you think the outcome will be?? In Arins case the snes controller is the mallet, and there were no tutorials. Final answer on this argument: Nearly every GG Vs episode until now, Arin and Jon give each other tips constantly. Refer to any of the fighting games. What you think is right is irrelevant; Jon suddenly broke with precedent for how they play together, and then tried to paint the request for information as unfair on Arin's part. When Arin got mad about that, Jon actually backpedaled on that logic, you'll notice, saying instead that it wouldn't have been to his "strategic advantage" go share information. Which is to say that sharing information would have destroyed his advantage. But because that advantage is maintained only by violating Jon and Arin's long-standing convention that they freely give each other tips, its an ill-gotten gain. So there you have it. You can stop arguing about it now.

@PianoMastR64
@PianoMastR64 8 лет назад
+Toffeebomb Not sure if sarcastic or not... It's neither unique nor a strategy because there's literally only one thing that can be done at that point, and that's to press a certain button to land on the platform. Timing the landing correctly is definitely a strategy because there are variables which need to be planned for. Even that's not unique because timing it is the only way to succeed in that portion of the competition. > yet still made sure Ego knew how to play I just read this part more carefully, and now I'm just confused because that didn't happen. Oh well. It's fun thinking about these things.
@ClassicBentobox
@ClassicBentobox 7 лет назад
Sports have rules. Games have laws. You don't touch the ball in Soccer with your hands because it's against the rules. You don't touch the ball in Fifa because it's impossible. There's no button for it. There's a limited amount of buttons and both came in with zero knowledge. That means it was entirely even ground. You can ask why Jon didn't tell Arin what button it was. Or you can ask Arin why the fuck he didn't try all the buttons like Jon did. Why do you think Jon won more Grumps Versus? More experimentation, and expanding upon that experimentation. This is what Arin should of done, especially in a competitive environment. Ergo, Arin isn't exactly in the right on this one, because it's a competition and not casual, And Arin has a somewhat extensive history of fucking with Danny in later games, so even if this convention stood, Arins morals certainly didn't.

Here's the thing. I may have said this before but whatever. If neither Jon nor Arin knew how to play before starting the minigame, and Jon figured it out mid-game, that then becomes part of the skill involved in winning. If Jon can figure it out, why can't Arin? And if he can't, fine, but that makes him objectively worse at doing the thing. Which means of course he's going to lose.

As an Nickelodeon Guts EXPERT [23-year-old grown ass woman here] Jon is the winner. In Guts, half the episodes were kids fucking up because they couldn't get the hang of something. There were the kids who got the timing or the maneuver or something, but there was always that one kid who was dangling in a harness, swinging a bat, swimming in a circle, or just generally being a piece of human garbage because they couldn't figure it out. Subsequently they get the least points. Jon figured out how to do it, which is something Arin easily could have done himself. Arin 1) had just as much opportunity to figure it out 2) probably could have figured it out in all the time he spent complaining about it and 3) arguably was a bad sport spending the episode arguing when he could have played along and just made fun of a stupid game But oblivion is inevitable and we're all going to die, does it really matter?

Both Jon and Arin were given the same amount of time to figure out how to land and Jon figured it out first. ...However! I do understand Arin's point of view since he was clearly trying to figure out how to land properly and Jon wasn't telling him how. It all depends on what you view as "fair". In the end though, I still think that Jon didn't "need" to tell Arin how to land since they both played it the same amount of time. Jon is in the right in my opinion.

That mini game was a competition about who can execute an action successfully more consistently; not about who can learn *how* to execute the actions first. What competition is explicitly designed to be about learning how to participate for the very first experience, it would never be played again afterwards, duuuuuuuuuh.

I hate to be that guy, but I see where both of them are coming from with the landing argument. I can totally see why Arin thought it was unfair that Jon wouldn't share that little bit of game-making information with him, but I also get why Jon thought it would be more fair if Arin figured it out for himself like he did. In any case, what an episode.

Jon is right in this argument. They both had zero advantage going in and he learned to adapt.

Jon is absolutely right HOWEVER its pretty shady that you wouldnt tell your friend how to play on top of the fact that its just a casual match its one thing if this was EVO and it was 2 competitors but like come on also that being said, looking back its really easy to sense how Jon is just doing this to get a reaction for da funnies

i'm with arin on this. its only good sportsmanship to tell your opponent how to play if they dont know, regardless of how long either of you has been playing.
@KaseboyAdvanceNB

No, but this is knowing the rules versus knowing techniques. If I know how to dunk or preform a lay-up in basket ball and you don't, that would be technique, because it is not required to know to do to play basketball. But if I know how to dribble and you don't or that would be unfair, because dribbling is required to know how to do to play basketball.
@lostxforxwordsx420
@lostxforxwordsx420 10 лет назад
Kase377 exactly. jon didn't know how to play, he figured it out. arin didn't know how to play, and instead of trying to figure it out he bitched at jon for figuring it out first and not telling him. if arin was just standing there saying 'how do i jump?' that would be different because the game requires you to know how to jump in order to proceed. he knew everything he had to do, just not the technique to perform best, which is the whole point of a fucking competition. otherwise it just turns into who can be the most consistent, which is fucking boring

At first i thought it was just jon played for 12 minutes without arin but it sounds like they've been playing the same amount of time since starting. So if i understand correctly, i'm now switching to jon's side. Sorry Arin lol

I agree with Arin here. Jon probably thought it wasn't a big deal and was having a laugh, but to Arin (and to me) it's bad sportsmanship not to tell your opponent how to play.

I'm on Jon's side. Since Jon figured it out by himself, he has the right to decide if he should tell Arin. Yeah, in a way Jon has an advantage, but it's more in the sense of skill rather than cheating. Like, if an Olympic Champion marathon runner was in a race with an average person, obviously the champion would have an advantage because he trained to do this stuff when the average person was focusing other things besides racing. But then there is another race where instead two average people competed, but one of them took some performance enhancing drugs to do better. This race is unfair because it wasn't a test of skill, but rather a test of drug usage. The only reason the situation in the actual video would be unfair is if Jon read about the game before Arin did.

+Timothy Schmid I think you bring up a great point, a question to be asked is whether the competition is not only based around the skill of playing the game, but also the "skill" (for lack of a better word) of figuring out the controls. To be honest I don't think there is a clear answer, although in my personal opinion I think with such an unimportant, arbitrary game and 'let's play' series it's fine to have 'figuring out the controls' as part of the competition. Especially since it contributes so hilariously to the show which is ultimately a comedy show, not an absolutely "who's the better" show.
