James Gilbey (I think) takes care of the Nickelodeon presentation duties on a Saturday morning soon before Christmas 1995 - maybe 23rd December - around Rugrats and into Pete and Pete. Look out for promos for the likes of Global Guts, Fish and Chips (with Mike "Mad for It" McClean and Kate "Click" Russell), Pick Nick at 6 (with Lucy "Homes Under the Hammer" Alexander), and the Watch Your Own Weekend that was currently in progress. For the last of those, James sets up a phone vote between Johann's Gift to Christmas, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and The Ferals - none of which I remember ever seeing.
Was I missing out by not having a fax machine in 1995? Because I'm surprised by the amount they were evidently receiving. They were also taking phone calls, and here James chats to young viewer Andrew who (it seems) answers a question the previous caller asked, before setting one for the next. Quite a clever concept, that. Oh, and are you a member of the mentioned 'I Hate Christmas Pudding' club? I'll take the same concept a step further: I'm a founder of the 'If Food Looks Like Chocolate, It Has a Solemn Duty to Taste Like Chocolate' club. Christmas puddings fit that bill, but so do those biscuits that look like they've got chocolate chips but they're actually raisins. If you can't trust a biscuit, who can you trust?
Many thanks to David for providing this tape.

Hi guys my name is Nil and I was a presenter on Nickelodeon in tge summer of 1997. I believe. Lol. I had my own show on Nick called Rush and it was an extreme sports segment. If anyone has any footage I would love to see it!!!!

There are a couple more Nick chunks from this same weekend that I'm working on at the moment and will hopefully be up in the next week or so - so stay tuned! :-)

I'm not sure what Johann's Gift For Christmas was, but all I know about the others is that Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was some spin off cartoon of the movie of the same name, while The Ferals was an Australian kids sitcom thing featuring puppets. I think they were on CBBC at one point or another? Yeah Christmas Pudding, you would think it's made with chocolate, but it's actually fruit....and alcohol with is a definite no-no from me! It's great seeing that everyone is enjoying the Nick Nostalgia here. Thanks again for uploading this. :)

Those Watch Your Own Weekend things were actually really quite a clever way to do market research. What better way to find out which shows your audience prefers over which? Oh, and thank _you_ again!

@@VideotapeFTW That is true. If popular enough certain shows could be marathoned for one weekend or two as well. You're very welcome. :)

I don't think I ever watched Nickelodeon back in the day. I only watched sky for wrestling, mtv, and movies. Saturday morning kids tv on bbc and itv was always enough for me. Although I think I might have watched the odd show on channel 4. Wasn't "why don't you" on channel 4?

I think it was a while before all the cable networks even carried Nickelodeon, so it took a while to catch on properly. I was also heavily into sport and music in this era, and in a strange way I regret that. Why Don't You was a BBC show. My memories of Channel 4 kids' TV are the likes of Pob, Chip's Comic, and eerie Eastern-European animations.

@@VideotapeFTW I'm pretty sure that this was recorded off of satellite. But you're right, companies tended to vary on what channels they offered.

I just realised something, they were receiving fax messages and this was a satellite/cable channel, yeah this is definitely aimed at the more upmarket audience, those with money that can afford satellite/cable TV as well as fax machines. LOL. :D It's also rare to hear the term "Computer AND video games" in one sentence as they are usually interchangeable terms that pretty much mean the same thing.
@VideotapeFTW
@VideotapeFTW 2 года назад
I never really thought of that - I suppose any non-terrestrial broadcast back then would have been aimed at an automatically different market compared to BBC/ITV/Channel 4, maybe subconsciously. Oh, and there used to be a _big_ difference in the userbases of console gamers (Sega, Nintendo) vs computer gamers (PC, Amiga, Atari ST, and the Spectrums and Commodores before that) - that's why they made the distinction!

@@VideotapeFTW Nowadays PC and console games are more or less referred to as video games, I don't why, maybe it's an American thing? But yeah the whole thing about the fxes just came to me.

Crazy when you think this must have been live. These days all you get is pre-recorded shite that is repeated and no personality!

Well spotted! I wonder if that was deliberate. I remember reading about that Sega Channel back then, but this is the first time I've ever seen that ad.
