Aria Overhead the moon is beaming from the operetta The Student Prince by Sigmund Romberg, Lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly. This was first published on the CD Champagner operette and was given by Gedda from his private archive.
A fantastic tenor who I heard in many concerts here in Sweden. Swedish television didn't have a memorial concert or documentary about him when he died, which I think is really tragic.

I couldn’t recognize him at first hearing Took me a few attentive listenings This is the first song in English I’ve heard from him and I’m very much impressed with his clean diction, already knowing his linguistic repertoire. I always knew Nicolai was a top-class artist. I like his Lehár and some other recordings - Faust, Hoffmann. On the Herur22 blog, I found other pieces that interested me. I found more recordings elsewhere. I spend evenings with Nicolai Gedda last few months, I smile with Nicolai Gedda, I tear with Nicolia Gedda. He recorded a lot. It's a bad idea to try listening to Gedda and work - writing something. It is not possible, his expressive singing disturbs me. Leontyne Price is behind my curse at the opera, I heard her the first almost 40 years ago, I was about 12 years old. I still love her. But Nicolai Gedda reached her level. We have a god of lyric singing - the best lyric tenor XX. century. Yes, there are stronger names in the Italian repertoire, but I am not Italian - despite my love for Verdi. But in selected performances Gedda succeeded, and rolled over the most Italian singers.
Best rendition I've ever heard and I've heard them all starting with Lanza who was a very good tenor for that era and died so young and ironically was not even it that movie. I did not know that Mr Gedda ever sang this. Thank you very much for posting Janja. Nicolai besides beeing a super tenor, was in my books a gentleman and a scholar, one more time R I P Maestro, you will be missed greatly.

Yes it is key higher but he escapes the end cadence. Same thing when others sing Be My Love Lanza still the king of both ending in High C Wunderlich comes closest to Be My Love because of his beautiful voice but still Lanza wins. The only tenor I have heard when he was young was Wieslaw Ochman a Polish tenor who sings the final High C with great beauty and gets away with singing it Mezza Voce. His English is terrible but his voice isn’t. Having said that his later recordings are painful 😖 to listen to. The worst Vesti La Giubba I have ever heard. I don’t know if you can hear him sing Be My Love but I’ll check now.
