Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”) and Ewan McGregor (“Fargo”) discuss the difference between TV and film, and share memories about shooting “Moulin Rouge” 16 years ago. bit.ly/VarietySubscribe
This is one of those reunions you didn't know you needed until you see an old friend you haven't seen in years. Seeing both these great and diverse actors again brings back fond memories of the chemistry I saw with them on the cinema screen with Moulin Rouge. You can tell Ewan and Nicole have great respect and friendship even still for each other. Great interview!
Clemmy Magee these actors came to popularity in a time that was very different for TV. It was not then as it is now, stories were not as varied and well written and actors typically saw TV as a niche industry (the small time) or a place to start a career. It’s only been in the last decade that TV/short form has become a great medium for storytelling. As they said in the interview, it wasn’t until a few renowned film actors began taking the risk of working in TV that things began to change :)
Interesting to see her leg position change while interviewing. When she suddenly realises she isn't 24 any more but then quite sad to see a very TALENTED woman resorting to facial sabotage. And then there is Ewan.....still looks good but a total prick
7 months later - she’s winning all the Best Actress awards for “Big Little Lies” (BLL) and he’s winning the Best Actor Awards for “Fargo” and BLL gets a 2nd season
That's the REASON for these mutual wank-fests - PROMOTION, so that the actors will win the awards. When the studios submit the actors for those awards, the actors have to comply with all these kinds of useless blah blah blah clauses in their contract, where they have to PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE - and this is regarded as promotion. So it's not a fluke that they win the awards - it's part of the pathway of the studio marketing. If you see an actor win an award and YOU NEVER HEARD OF THEM OR SAW THEM IN ANY JUNKETS OR PROMOTION OR INTERVIEWS, that's when you know the system is not working correctly.
This was a DREAM to watch. I am 34 now and when I was a kid, 12/13 Moulin Rouge came out and that film changed my life. These two have been my favorite actors since and its a pleasure growing up with them both. Watching their work! Thank you, Variety for such a brilliant pairing here... So needed! x
oh well...that's not true at all...for example, Jennifer Jones and William Holden didn't get along while doing Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing back in 1955...also Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn didn't get along during Sabrina(1954)...even Paul Newman didn't get along with Sophia Loren during Lady L in 1965
Ugh, these two. Christian and Satine ruined my love life for many years by setting an impossible standard. If he wasn't singing a medley of love songs to me on top of a giant elephant, forget it! ;-) Love these two. They need to do a Leo and Kate and reunite on another movie!
Karliene, LOL literally. So true, I was 21 I think when i watched the film and thought exactly the same, he has to be staring at me across from a windmill in twilight cinematic weirdness or get lost dude....Maybe thats why I'm still single lol. 😆
Kate Winslet big fat buxom Mae West, I was exactly the same like wtf. Beautiful Kate winslet, showing a slightly curvy woman who looked older then Leo in a way but never thought it was poor casting or even crossed my mind...Leo just looked incredibly young.
The give and take between Nicole and Ewan is wonderful to watch. It is abundantly clear the respect, admiration and genuine friendship. Their body language is telling. They are gaving each other yet Nicole carries herself with true grace and Ewan is absolutely comfortable with her. I love this and didn't know I needed.
Anthony Hebisen Same with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Or Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Ryan Gosselin and Emma Stone. It's great to see people who say you know what I enjoy working with you let's make another movie.
Some of these 'Actors on Actors' are a tough slog, even when they're actors I really like. But this one is a conversation I could listen to for another hour. They're both great storytellers, but just as important they're both great listeners, which is what transforms an ordinary conversation into a connection, a meeting of the minds. Really lovely.
I would die and come back just to experience The Moulin Rouge for the fist time and hear these to sing once more with no hesitation. Such lovely people and true artists. Thanks for shaping my childhood and giving me something full of love when my life was so bleak.
the best one I've seen. They were so comfortable with each other, so interested in talking about these things, raised great points... really, really great
@@ellie_nard I literally have just stopped sobbing (I'm 100% still sobbing) I really don't know what I expected from moulin rouge or why I didn't watch it for so long but the whole thing was like an acid trip and then the ending has literally broke me and I'm needed to watch this to settle myself!!!!
I never miss an interview or conversation with Nicole Kidman simply because this woman is full of wisdom and seems like a great learner too. She has a great way of expressing her thoughts so articulately and seems like a very balanced person. The fact that this interview is between two old friends who worked on a masterpiece makes it only more engaging and intimate. Just like her earlier conversation with Casey Affleck, I loved this one too.
I remember her saying in an interview after Moulin Rouge that you just can't help but fall in love with Ewan when you hear him sing. Facts! 💯 I remember the first movies I saw of his, Trainspotting and Velvet Goldmine, I just loved him so when Moulin Rouge came out and I heard him sing I was so head over heels for him. Nicole, always loved her and her voice is like an angel's. Such an extraordinary woman with talent and wisdom. I hope they can both star in something again, maybe a TV series or film. It would be great to see that chemistry on film again.
Oh my God, these two still have the same quemistry from moulin rouge! The best actor on actor ever! It could go on and on and I still be watching them talk!
LordKaido Big Little Lies was the exact opposite of boring! we were taken in immediately. the entire time you're wondering who in the hell dies and kills at the end because almost everyone is a suspect. it's brilliant!
I think it's going to be a tough race between Nicole Kidman and Jessica Lange. JL got 8 episodes to show a lot more range than Nicole, but we never know. They were both amazing.

I was watching the first episode last night and was very kept by it. I really like those intimate, subdued dramas.
I loved the laid-back honesty they were sharing. I've loved them as an acting pair on "Moulin Rouge". They stretched themselves individually and as an acting team far beyond anything they had ever done to include the acting, intense comedy and dancing. hearing their perspectives on issues and experiences in acting and the media business/processes was intense and deeply shared and felt.
I can’t express myself enough to see this…very refreshing to have actors directly speaking to another within the same profession but yet see true sides of others at the same time. Aside from that, her voice and his in Moulin Rouge! I loved the song “come what way”…. Thank you soo much for the duet…❤
They were so comfortable with each other... it is truly such a treat. Specially with Nicole as she seems mostly guarded in her interviews. But in this particular interview, she looked at home and talking a lot too! Maybe it comes with maturity too. Respect too that they did not bleep out All the F words from Ewan!
Just saw the movie (again) and thought it’d be nice to see this interview (again) BECAUSE WHY NOT. The movie is just timeless. They’re both timeless actors as well.
Nicole Kidman is absolutedly one of our greatest actresses of our time. Everything she does is quality and she has so much range. You could see it even in commercials that she does. Her Channel No 5 commercial is so artistic and captivating.
Their chemistry is as great as it was back then, but then, they're great people and they're great actors. Nicole and Ewan aren't about repetition, they're about discovery, which is why their cinematic chemistry with me never fails either.
I LOVE THEM BOTH! Fantastic Interview with 2 individuals who worked on a film together that personally had a massive amount of importance to my life. Seeing them together again, talking, laughing and reminiscing brings me joy! Thanks Variety! More of these please :)
This is what I needed. Moulin Rouge is one of my all time favorite movies. I have followed both actors since then. Well I was following Ewan since 1st grade after I saw star wars lol then when i snuck and saw moulin rouge in 3rd grade and recorded it on vhs lmfao when my parents werent home i was SOLD haha and have been following each since. LOVE them both soooo much!!!
Omg.... Almost 30 minutes of Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor is JUST WHAT WE NEEDED YAAAAAASS! Finally a long interview! Can't wait for her new movie The Beguiled
What exceptional viewing. Well done Variety for putting this together. It is wonderful to get an insight of top actors by interviewing each other. They seem a lot more comfortable and have given us, the viewer, a lot more of themselves. Brava!
Love these two very great actors. They did fantastic work in " Moulin Rouge". I still watch to this day. Thank you for making my life a happier place. I love movies.
Nicole Kidman is *fabulous* in this one on one. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Ewan McGregor fan and he's great here too but I find Nicole to be particularly charming & engaging. She is extremely well spoken & articulate and also very attentive to everything Ewan has to say. Ewan was all these things too but I don't know, for whatever reason it was Nicole who made a much bigger impression. One thing's for sure, Ewan & Nicole's chemistry together is incredible and still as electric as it was almost 20yrs ago in Moulin Rouge. I would *love* to see the two of them together onscreen again in the very near future.
I really love these, because I love hearing actors freely talk about what they do. There's no agenda, they just discuss the craft and the art and their perspective.
20 years ago and I can't stop to watch their movie Moulin Rouge. Thanks Nicole Kidman and Evan McGregor for your job! (Christian is the best boyfriend that I ever wish. I loved him so much!)
I'm so glad they did this mini reunion for this interview. Just them talking about Moulin Rouge made me so giddy I adore that film so much. I can't believe they did this. I love these Actors on Actors interview because they are so raw and pure. I'm so happy for them and the movies/TV shows they have accomplished over the years. ❤
these are two amazing human beings whose passion for what they are doing is obvious from anything theyre saying. i love both of them and respect their sense of work and passion and life and art. great interview. may there be many more long years for these two to keep doing what they love, and for us to be witness to their creations
Honestly, Disney would miss a huge opportunity not casting Nicole as Satine. She literally plays a woman Satine who (spoiler alert) dies in Ewan (Obi Wan)'s hand at the end of the film. It is dead on poetic
Moulin Rouge with these two was the right film at the right time in my life. I own the film. and OMG, Baz Luhrman... Holy Shit. Who can make a film like this?! Love.
