The Nidecker Supermatic Snowboard Bindings - Selected for the Whitelines 100 Snowboard Awards
We’ve all heard the old adage ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but Nidecker isn’t trying to redesign the wheel here…just a binding. After the initial Quick-Entry binding fad faded into the ether, several brands brought their new and improved versions to market in recent seasons. Instead of rushing to keep up with the competition, Nidecker bided their time and spent years in the R&D lab fine tuning their own answer to speedy bindings.
Enter the Supermatic, a binding that combines the easy accessibility of automated closure, the versatility of dual-entry and the broad appeal of universal compatibility. Nidecker highlights that their Supermatic is the only binding currently on the market that ticks all three of these boxes, a triple threat that intersects at the heart of the binding Venn Diagram. So, while the traditional binding model wasn’t inherently broken, thus not requiring ‘fixing’ as such, Nidecker decided to throw their hat into the ring of innovation and came up trumps with the Supermatic.

I think what a lot of people aren't considering is that a lot of the Midwest and lower-mid east coast are stuck to mountains and runs with only a few hundred feet vertical. Taking your binding off and strapping back in every 5ish minutes really starts to add up and become a nuisance, so for those people this and the Burton step in are absolutely game changers. For people strapping in every 20-30 min throughout the day, it's a nice couple minutes of your day back and less time for your skier friends to have to wait up for ya and that's about it

As a Michigander who just went snowboarding yesterday, I can confirm from my soreness in my lower back and torso, I am most definatly loooking into either this or flow bindings. Initialy wanted burton stepons a couplee years ago but i like th best of both worlds.

Well, I just got back from Utah boarding for a week. I got the bindings and really liked them, it took a minute to set up. I like forward lean and was finding it harder to get in. Took it off and was great. I would recommend, a mate of mine got them to and he really like them too.

Been riding them for about a month. I am a size 12 and still fit on the Large size even though they say it fits up to size 11. They are game changing, half the time depending on the lift i just get of the chair and slide my foot in without stopping and head down the mountain. They are stiff enough to feel responsive but definitely not the stiffest. I have concerns about the slick part of the sole that helps the boot glide in with reduced friction. Only time will tell if they remain smooth, mine already have a couple of scratches. snow buildup has not been an issue at all and I feel securely attached. Every single one of the people I ride with want to get a pair next season.

Got mine yesterday. Look like a quality piece of kit and very well-made, though I can already see some sections that could probably easily be replaced with carbon to reduce weight for a 'pro' version, specifically the highback / roller / heel-cup section. Will give them a shot in my local snow dome, then the plan is to see if the fusion straps from my Flow Fuse bindings will fit, for the ultimate lazy git snowboard experience :D

The only thing I didn't like is the placement of the release button. Waaay too low. I had to add a screw fixed metal piece with a string. Cause if I could bent that low, I wouldn't gain that much from an automatic binding 😁. The rest, it's ok, some getting used to inserting the back leg in order to well engage the blocking metal teeth, but not that bad. A very important thing is to check the engagement of the locking teeth before riding. I once had the back foot pop out at the first toe turn.... Wasn't fun. But since, I've checked it and zero problems.

Step On rider here who owns the X, Genesis, and Re:Flex bindings, as well as the Ion and Photon boots. I bought a couple pairs of the Supermatics and looking forward to riding them this year. I see the limited boot selection as a major drawback of the Step Ons. To me, boots are the most important piece of gear in a snowboard setup and there are better boots on the market than any of the Step On offerings by Burton, DC, or Nitro. I like the Ions, but they don’t “wow” me and the Photons are just sitting in a box untouched. I plan to pair the Supermatics with the K2 Thraxis, Ride Trident, and Ride Insano boots. Boards are a K2 Alchemist, K2 Passport, Jones Flagship, and Yes Basic Decade.

Been on them now for about 5 days of riding and I like them though I still feel like the stepping in and out takes some time or maybe I've adjusted the steps too tight for easy slip in? When I'm in they feel great for an all mountain freeride boarding.
@petehelme7714
@petehelme7714 Год назад
Ditto, especially on getting out, been on mine 3 days. Maybe we just are riding them snugger than designed (though in my case the boots I'm using seem to get caught up on their heel on the roller). I'm also a Flow rider and this has echoes of their strap looseness preference. Which shouldn't be a surprise I suppose.
@Daz555Daz
@Daz555Daz 10 месяцев назад
@@petehelme7714 Just a quick suggestion. Make that you have that middle strap nice and loose - you should be able to get a couple of fingers underneath it. It's only there to hold the main strap in place and performs no function in terms of ride feel. Looking at other reviews having this too tight is the main cause of any issues getting in or out.
@icyborgninja7208
@icyborgninja7208 Год назад
Been riding these for the past few weeks now and for me, stepping in and out seems to be quite hard if your size boot is size 10 like mine, I personally feel like I'm hitting the max limit for the binding size, even though it should support my size. Another thing, all the straps are needed to be tight otherwise I lose feedback. But with them being tight, it's impossible getting in these without undoing my strap. So for me it's a 50/50 good and bad.
@clintstechtips6571
@clintstechtips6571 Год назад
Someone with a size 11 doesn't have issues with it.. so perhaps your set up is wrong ( nidecker has a set up guide, the middle connection strap should leave a finger width to the boot) or you have chonky boots and something is catching on it

From what Ive gathered from a review made by a guy whos tested them out for several weeks. He was saying that in his opinion these bindings are not going to be favoured by anyone who likes their straps really tight because that make them harder to lock in and step out of. I guess tight straps are more suited to hard chargers and jibbers (which Im guessing the other testers in this review are) rather than mere mortals, in which case I reckon Id love them if I could get my hands on a pair. The guy who made that review is a hardcore rider but he has obviously spent more than a couple of days using the, has dialled in a strap tension that works for him and clearly loves them.
@gwoodsy6872
@gwoodsy6872 4 месяца назад
It is a moot point, because you can still take them off or strap in like a regular binging when the situation calls for it, so it is the best of both worlds. They don’t need to be ridden super tight anyway for 99% of situations, unless you are maybe settling land speed records or doing X games type jumps.
@fruduroc

@@gwoodsy6872 Your right. In fact I own a pair now and I can tell that it can be super tight (like painful but nothing move) using the step in mode. I really love them and I would never use an other type of binding (except for splitboard of course). (I'm in Switzerland, I'm riding since 1990, love park, jibs and freeride).

Sounds like u can only use any boot when using straps normally, but only use step in with proprietary/special Nidecker 'drop in' boots? 🤔 The way its worded around 1:06 suggests special 'drop in' boots needed to use the step in option?
@Daz555Daz
@Daz555Daz 10 месяцев назад
You can use any standard snowboard boot with the step-in function. That's one of their key selling points. The benefit of being able to strap in normally is when you are in a sketchy situation and standing up to step in just isn't an option.

@WhitelinesSnowboarding Год назад
Totally depends on the rider and what they want in a binding. And it's impossible *not* to take into consideration the limited boot options on Step Ons as it's such a huge tick in the box for the Supermatics! If you want the choice of automatic and conventional straps (say, for example, you need to strap in/out sitting down, or in deep powder), or you just like the feeling and response you get from having straps over the top of the boots, then these are pretty much unrivaled in our opinion. If you prefer the clean, lightweight and strap-free design of the Genesis Step On, then there's your answer! We really rated them last year and they won a Whitelines 100 award in 2021/22. We've had multiple riders from our test team trying out both bindings, and we can vouch for the performance and comfort of both. So if you're looking for a good quick entry option, these are two of our favourites! Hope that helps?

They’re not as good as advertised. I have them, and here as some issues: 1. The diagonal strap that connects the toe and ankle straps is a hindrance when you’re sliding into the binding, so you have to basically loosen it completely to help get your book in, which defeats the purpose of it even being there. 2. They are not going to work the same with every boot. If you boot is bulky, good luck. I have Burton moto boots that were not bulky at all and I still have all kinds of issues with these. 3. Your foot has to go in at the right angle for these to work easily, so if you are on uneven terrain and have to balance on your front foot while stepping it with your back foot, your chance of getting you foot in easily is significantly decreased. 4. Do you like loose straps? If you do, great, you’ll love these. You’ll get in first try every time. If you like your boots to not move in your binding while riding, then stepping into these will be frustrating - maybe frustrating enough to look elsewhere. If you like tight bindings, forget it. Your boot will hit the strap before your heel clears the plate, so when you step down you will just be stepping onto the folded down plate instead of the lever that snaps the binding back into place. All in all, they’re nowhere near as good or easy to use as advertised, and not the all in one solution they claim to be.
