You had the first full review of these bindings, and while other reviewers are just going to release their first review, you're already on the follow-up video :D Killing it on the review front, this year, haha! Thanks for the follow-up!
Dude I was like who TF is that guy…then you started talking and I was like whooooooooowwwww it’s Malcolm 😂 feels like I just „know“ you with glasses beanie and buff…nice video as always ✌🏻
I am not a tight binding guy…like I never tighten them to the last click, and I can confirm these are still a pain in the ass at least half the time. To step in easily every time, you’d need to have the straps looser than I think most riders want them. They aren’t nearly as good as advertised. With what nidecker charges for these things it should be automatic and it isn’t. For the price, you shouldn’t have to change how you like your bindings to get them to work…they should just work.
I just mounted these up and have one weekend of riding on them. I was initially disappointed in how difficult it was to slide my boot in with my bindings as tight is I generally like them. I found that loosening the ankle strap a few clicks before pulling your boot out makes re-entry much easier. After you stepped back in, you can quickly retighten the strap those few clicks. It is a little annoying that there are a couple additional steps I thought I’d be avoiding with these bindings, but overall I’m still very happy with them. Both exiting and entering the binding is still done without having to sit down and is accomplished in much less time than traditional bindings. Once you figure it out, it only adds a few seconds to the process and you can still have your straps as tight as you like them.
Thanks for the no bs, honest follow up review. Aging into the demographics you noted. Beats being toes up:). Last season the bindings were falling apart on the board used at the local "mtn". A vertically challenged area. Replaced by a set of Flow NX2-TM (Nidecker owns flow for those unaware) for the convenience factor. Use to be one of those dolts that over cranked the straps. Took a few runs to adjust to the "soft" feel of the strap system. But I prefer the feel and ride quality. As I said I was a dolt. These Supermatics would make life even more convenient.
I have a basic set of no frills bindings (no canted base or high back adjustment) and was planning my upgrade now that I have more experience with my board. You had me sold after your first video and now you made me confident with my decision to go with the supermatics. I was originally planning on getting the Burton Step Ons for this season but you just saved me some $$$. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Nidecker take my money!!!
Hi Malcolm. Thanks for this review. Did you notice however any wearing out of your boots on the heel from slipping in and out of the bindings? I know there is a little wheel, but I tested these bindings with my boots in the store and I did notice that the heel was kind of suffering a bit (the rubber that is) after a while. These were my Burton Boa's size US 10 (UK 9, EUR 43) in the size L bindings. Of course, it's not 'lubricated' by snow and tested in dry conditions, but I want to make sure my boots won't suffer. You have quite some experience with these. Did your boots show any sign of wearing off? Did the rubber suffer somehow? And... would it be smart to maybe pick a size XL for the bindings when ordering in your opinion? I ruined my previous boots with Roxy step-in bindings (tore off the rubber by putting them up and down) so I am extremely careful of what I buy when it comes to bindings. Many thanks for your reply!
Hey Malcom! This season is going to be my first one on the snow and I was pondering whether to go for skis or board, but then I found your channel and my mind is now made up. I'm excited to drop down the mountain for the first time, and watching all your tutorials already makes me feel like an intermediate rider (I'm practicing the movements in my living room lol). This might sound dumb, but as the season is approaching, I was wondering if you could do like a packing run-through before heading out to the mountain. And I don't mean just the gear (board, helmet, goggles, etc), I mean the ultra beginner stuff like what are the things you will need up there but don't know you need it kind of thing (things you wear underneath the snow gear like socks underwear etc, extra pairs of something, or anything else you can think of). It can be a short little video while you're packing your suitcase to kick the season off and it will really help first-timers like me. Anyway, thanks again for all your hard work! Love your channel.
Thanks for the idea, maybe I'll do it 🤔 Honestly for me though where I live it doesn't drop that cold, so underneath my clothes I just layer with regular clothing. When I used to work in Canada I had to be a bit more technical with proper baselayers and down jackets underneath. That was because it was really cold there. Beside that, good ski socks are helpful, not thick furry ones either, you don't want your feet to have that much room in your boots. Besides that, suncream, lip balm, and all the other stuff you mentioned!
@@malcolmmoore Thanks for the response! That was all the info I needed. I'm super stoked to get out there! My only worry about going with the snowboard was all my friends are on skis and I don't want to hold them back (I doubt rental has these Nidecker step-ons yet). But I can't just not do it, the snowboard looks like so much more fun and gives you more freedom to do stuff rather than just go from point A to point B quickly. And I got you to thank for, you have a really good channel for getting people into snowboarding. Which is why I would like to see you in-person coach more beginners (even though you did a few already) because a lot of people are put off picking up the snowboard because they think it's too difficult compared to skis, so when they see beginners picking it up easily it will give them a boost (speaking from personal experience here). Thanks again! Keep up the great work.
As someone who has tried skiing and is beginning to snowboard i can already say snowboarding is much more fun! Good choice hehe hope you have fun on the slopes
The other category of folk is people who ride regularly with skiers and/or kids. Yes probably still the older bunch but it just allows a better wavelength connection to the group. I just started this year on Burtons and it makes a subtle but sizable difference once you're in and out super quick.
these bindings are good for ALL you seem to target older boarders which is Bull shit.. The big advantage to these and FLOW bindings you dont have to sit down to put them on and off and they are faster to put on and off much better design than burton which needs special boots
I just got a used 2023 one, and yes, Malcolm is right, it is a bit hard to get your boot in when you like to crank the strap (I happen to be one). Also, the middle strap is for support, it was not supposed to be tight against the boot. I found that out after having a hard time... silly me. I like them now, and I am in the "demographic" Malcolm is talking about, almost 50, and had a difficult time bending over to strap in. The only problem I am running into is the need to hold the lever down when you pull the boot out. That needs some getting used to.
@@jimmybushkill5295 Maybe, but I haven't tried those. I have tried bindings from the most brands and when I switched to Ride C-8 that made a huge difference for me.
Great review on both videos. Aas someone that's been riding since the late 80s and 53 years of age I can say I've been contemplating step-ins for a while. I snow host -guide new visitors at the resort and find that Im in and out of the bindings sometimes more than I want to so looking at these for ease. Also the fact that they take any boot really makes them versatile as we may not all want a Burton boot or have more than one board. Once I get mine I'll give my review but looking at your review Im hoping I can just say yeah they are great :) !
I know this is old but I just got a pair of these and wanted to know if they slide in a lot easier when it’s wet from the snow mine slide in okay but the way yours looks like it slides like butter? Also I haven’t worn these on the mountain yet but I’ve noticed my boots are rubbing a bit and the hammock cushion seems like it’s getting tore up some from putting my foot in
You answered my question about the sliding when wet just watched that part lol thank you. Only question now is how durable are the cushions on the footbed and hammock
Hey brother just checking in great last 2 vids dude🤙been spending time on motocross funny thing I got a very similar duck but he’s in a red outfit looking forward to trying out my mega merc ,Rome black label , k2 Thrax still gonna keep the twinpig tho probably mostly in park can’t wait to hit the slopes on some bomb runs really jonesin peace out bro hit me up later🤙
Hey man, glad to here you're well, I'm starting to browse the new boards, looking at going back to a more traditional board maybe, but also I've got enough boards in the closet that it doesn't matter if I don't find anything new!
Im so stoked i remembered to check if YOU did a review on these. Ive been skeptical since last season. Now im sold! Nice to see someone who does thorough reviews and videos. Im not a fan of the "cool guy" youtubers. Dood you are as real as it gets. Stoked on this! Gonna go buy right now. Thanks Malcolm
Hi Malcolm, thx for pointing me to these two excellent reviews! One more question: Are they easy to step into in deep powder or does it just make more sense to put them on like normal bindings in such scenario? Thx
If it was really deep, probably makes more sense to use them like a normal binding, to be honest if you're just riding powder in a resort unless you're getting stuck, hopefully you won't need to take them on and off in the deep snow!
I just got my supermatics, I find it hard to lock it to the last tooth of the gear on the back. it often stops at the second tooth. I bought it at the end of the season with some discount and now I cannot test it on snow, I can make it lock at the last set of tooth if I really try hard on a yoga mat, I worry that I won't be able to do that on softer snow.
With any binding it is about the adjustability and making sure it is centred and set how you like it. Even though this has a big trick to it, you still fully reviewed it on top of a detailed consideration of the step in function, and appreciated who may use each function. Precious little info out there and this review hits the nail on the head for anyone considering this binding.
Thanks for the review Malcolm! I think yet another target audience for these are people who may even be in good shape but are often riding with skiers and have to endure their bickering about the amount of time we take at the chairlifts 😉. Not sure if this has been asked already, but what about the riders that like to use a more aggressive forward lean angle on the highbacks for carving. Can this be done with Supermatics and will it somehow compromise the ease of step in or step out functions?
Well, I'm a year late but I have the '24s and I like a bunch of forward lean. The Supermatics have limited adjustment and the max forward lean is like in the middle of the adjustment range on my Union Force Classics. It is enough for me, but only just. I would say the Supermatics are actually easier to get into than normal bindings with the same amount of forward lean. The highback starts from way back when you step in and then you can put your weight into it to get everything into place. In normal bindings you have to wiggle your boot and crank the ankle strap to get your heel into position, especially with pretty stiff boots. I got these for riding the tiny hills around where I live where the tow lifts and strapping in take a good percentage of time at the hill (usually minimal lift lines).
Be careful, when you ride the chairlift I accidentally pressed the lever with my other foot and the board came off. First time I was barely getting on the chairlift and the board fell down. Next time, again, I accidentally pressed the lever but this time I noticed it and was able to put on the binding again. Overall I am very happy with these Bindings.
Great review Malcolm! I did like your initial comprehensive review a few months ago and pre-ordered a set right away. As it so happens, I am one of those older, fatter and out of shape boarders, who can no longer manage with conventional bindings. Most people don't realize how difficult it is for folks like me to reach (repeatedly) all the way to the straps and strap in. It is actually very exhausting and saps our energy very quickly. Many times, I would stop boarding after just one or two runs. It's not lack of stamina, as I ski too - for 6 to 8 hours per day. I have great hopes that these Nideckers willl resolve a major issue with my use-case for snowboarding. Can't wait to start the new season with these bindings.
Hello malcolm :D I watched a video of yours made 2-3 years ago where you talked about the warpig if I remember right. I am wondering if the board is still great and if I should buy it. It would be my first snowboard that i'm not renting. Is it a good board, do you have any advice and as always keep the work up, thanks!
Really looking forward to your return this season Malcolm. It will be my first season Snowboarding instead of Skiing and your videos have done nothing but hype me up!
So, they don´t work for me. My foot size is 12,5. You said they´ll release the XL on this season. Is that confirmed? Because I´m from Brazil and I really want to buy thoses for my snow trips. Thanks a lot for your videos. They are all helping me a lot.
I love how the end is, "who are these for...: someone older who is not in shape..." Says who? Yeah, i'm 50, but i've been riding the same pair of flows for 15 years and and looking for upgrade. I've been snowboarding since the late 90's and although i'm hucking big sh*t but i can definitely ride. After riding flows that long i bought a pair of Unions and took them to Japan where i was wearing a backpack with beacon and recovery gear in. Bending over especially after a belly full or Ramen post lunch and dealing with old school strap bindings pretty much sucked. Also i shred with skiiers a lot and keeping up with them can be pretty clutch because I can easily step in. So is it really not for an advanced rider or is that just purist type BS? I'd love to know...
I just meant that ultimately that is who is mostly buying them. Doesn't mean they're low performance though. They've also come on a long way since I made this video and I still actually ride them.
Hi, I'm a french people and I'm 14yo. I practice ski and I would snowboarding but I don't know how size I must take. I'm 1,68 meter (551,181 feet) and 50kg (110,231 lbs) can you tell me what size i should take to start Thanks

hi there, I am experiencing some issues .. if I make em just few clicks. it is all ok to step in/out, but then my back foot when carving little harder is moving slightly in the bindings(toe side carve- heel lifting-the whole boot)- so it is pretty annoying.. but then if I crank em hard. then I have real trouble getting in/out- mainly IN. any experience/advice ? boot 41/supermatics M size. Thank U all
Those are definitively heavy bindings and that's without the snow accumulation on them. I wouldn't buy the first generation of these. Great idea but they need to improve on the weight department. I have some Flows FUSE GT weighing at 2lbs 9 Oz and they make my legs tired in long runs. I also run some old fashioned Rome 390 Boss which are lighter and I don't get any leg tiredness from those.
Great binding BUT it damages (wooden) board decks! I watched your reviews and finally bought an XL for my Jones Hovercraft with a bamboo deck. Great function, great hold, a little heavier than my old K2 Chinch. But only after a few days of use I have big dents in the wooden deck from the thin fins under the moveable heel part that cause a lot of pressure on a small area on the deck. I guess after some more days the wood will be really damaged and exposed or split. I am already in contact with Nidecker for a solution, imo a simple, thin plate under the binding would prevent these damages. Until there's a solution for this problem I wouldn't recommend the Supermatic for boards with a wooden deck, like many of the high-end Jones boards have.
I always click it back down, so pop out and then kind of push down on the high back with my foot to fold it forward and click it in. In my original review vid I think you'll see me do that. But yeah, if you don't that would get in the way for sure. Alot of the promo videos show people riding off chairs and then clicking right in, but because I've already clicked it down, I'll skate off, stop then put my foot on the lever to open it, and then click in. Sounds longer than it actually is, a bit like this reply...
I just got mine yesterday! can't wait to season start here in South America (Argentina). I am 46 and I am really tired of bending over, just a resort guy, not backcountry, not park, just cruise!!!
Thanks. Great review, I got the Nidecker Team bindings last year so will be looking at getting these as my next set after I've done a few seasons with my current ones. Hopefully they'll come down in price by then!
Thanks for the review. Are u still using usual bindings in some cases or u stick only to nideckers? I am in process of buying new set. An can't choose between usual bindings, for example Union Atlas or Burton cartels, and nideckers.
Hey Malcolm, well done! How would you compare these to responsiveness to other brand/models? That might be a bit helpful. Say a burton Genesis or Cartel? Clearly Union Atlas more stiff and responsive, but can you draw any comparisons?
Hello Malcolm! I have a question, my toes stick out a little too much with these bindings and I can fix it if using the offset disk with the triangle towards the tail or nose. But that creates an offset, will this be an issue? Because in the manual it says you can put the triangle on the disk to the heelcup to create a offset towards the heel, but I found that if I put the offset towards the tail or nose I have 3mm more room to shift my binding towards the heel, creating less toe sticking out. Would love to hear your opinion on this. Please help me out
Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you've picked the right size bindings for your boot size, then you should be able to centre you binding on the board without any problems. If you're doing that but just getting overhang then it might just be that your board is too narrow for your foot.
The sizing should be alright, I've checked the size charts. I have boot size US 10 EU 43, Nidecker Supermatic's size L and Bataleon Goliath 159. The Supermatic's come with the offset disk, the offset disk has a triangle, you can point the triangle towards the heelside to create an offset of 3mm towards the heelside, or you can point the triangle towards the tail to create an offset towards the tail of 3mm, while doing so you can also move your bindings up and down to move the further towards the toe or heelside. So by doing that I can move my binding a little more towards my heelside, which creates less overhang on the toes. I was wondering if there is a downside to this?
Great honest review these 2 vids 👌🏼 But I think you were a bit unfair to the Clew bindings. I don't really know what the Problem was with you telling Clew your reservations and they canceled their offer to send you a pair. I had a few chats with them before I even tried out my first clews and I was very critical but they always stayed being nice to me and trying to give me the opportunity to try their bindings. I don't really know what the problem should be having a highback attached to your boot...yes it may look a bit unfamiliar to people who are actually looking at your boots, but who cares !? Isn't Snowboarding all about having fun, find your own way, your own style and don't care what others think about you? Besides that, the big advantages that the Clew bindings have: For people who love stiff bindings, they are pretty stiff! They don't have this lateral movement you talked about and it's a big plus for me because I want to feel strapped in tight in all directions. With the clews you can have your ankle strap being tight as f*** which allows very quick edge transfers because that doesn't matter for stepping in or out with the highback and ankle strap being attached to your boot most of the time. To be honest they can be a bit tricky sometimes to get the quick step in and out and getting both of the 2 clicks out of the locking mechanism but for me they are the only option of a pretty stiff quick entry binding right now and you should be fair and try them before you compare them to other Bindings 😉
The market of this binding is also someone who rides with many skiers that always have to wait for him to attach the board on every slope 😂 Also, it doesn't make sense to have these bindings if you ride with snowboarders that don't have them because then you'd had paid 400€ to wait for your buddies.
I really appreciate how comprehensive your reviews of the Supermatic have been, thanks! Do you know if there'll be any changes to the 22/23 model, or is staying the same?
I am actually concerned with theft. They are all the hype now and any boot can ride off with them. Same can be said for any binding off course, but they are not as hyped up as these. Maybe I am paranoid, but that is a win for step ons my opinion.
I have got myself into flow and step on binding. But still end up selling them and back to traditional straps… It just doesn’t feel as good as the traditional binding.
After these videos on these bindings I was sold. Went over to buy some and sold out and not a bigger size till next year anyway. Going with the WarPig board. I’m 6’3 255lb intermediate rider what bindings should I look at for this season that would be similar feeling to those?
Apparently your videos werent enough. The new color got me over the finish line in buying them 😋 Got a few runs in the snowhall in but I’m stoked to get them on a real slope in december. My skier friends like me better already 😂. Thanks for your reviews (and other videos)! Now working on your switch techniques! Have a great season!
nice one... didn't expect a product review from you mate... been watching lots of your technique vids, which are brilliant... And funnily enough im looking for new bindings, i have flows, so more than happy with them, thought about burton stepins but i love my boots too much, so its between getting new flows or these. you have one of the most positive reviews of them, there are a lot of negative ones... you might have made my mind up.,. and yes i'm a bit older, thanks for that !! lol...
Step on boots were really just designed to work with step in bindings, not just because of the clips, but because of how they have been designed to work without straps over the top. In theory you probably could get a pair in these bindings, like how you could probably get them in a set of normal bindings, but that's not what they were designed for.
@@malcolmmoore Thank you for the reply! Yeah I’m just trying to save money and use the boots I already have. Just wanted to see if the cleats on the Burtons would mess with or damage the straps on the Supermatics.
I wish Nidecker added some extra rubber or foam underneath bindings to a) add more shock absorption and b) protect the surface of the board thanks to that.
I did a beginner lesson with someone on the Burton step ons. She kept having to use my binding strap to scrape off the snow packed on the bottom of her boots to get them to clock in. Thought that was ironic. Glad the supermatics don’t seem to have that issue.
Hi, thanks for this great review . I intend to buy it when they release the XL version. On another note, would you be able to do a video about binding angles and highback forward lean. I am an early intermediate and struggle for turn from heel to toe on steep red slopes . I wonder if adjusting binding angles and changing highback setback will help with the process
Ive got this mate, every powder day we ride and he always seems to jump in front of me and get the fresh lines..not a good mate i I know 😂, but if these can give me an extra 5 seconds off the lift and straight into it, just to piss him off, im gon lay down $$ thanks for the 2 vids man, I might just have to buy me a pair. Also, they seem to be good for those moments in between chair lifts where you have to skate and you don’t want to fully strap in but its a few hundred meters to the next lift. I mean, if I can save me some energy and not bend over with my pack on I’d be mad not to…and no im not the old guy you’re referring to in this video, Im more of an economist😂😂😂
Ciao Malcolm! Is there the option to adjust the Supermatic forward and backward with the 2x4 bushings? To center the bindings and boots in snowboard axle. Sorry for my english, thanks Malcolm Bye!❄️🏔️🏂:)
Missed out on the '23 batch so just pre-ordered the '24 stock which should come in October. They are £399 by the way. I've also ordered new board and boots (end of season '23 sales) for the first time in over a decade so already counting the days to next season's snow........groan....
My wife and I are both in our 50s now. We have a love hate relationship with flows, to the point that I have gone back to unions after the top if the range flows ripped the heal off of two pairs of my boots. I think it’s pretty likely that one of us will be buying these at some point.
My question is though Malcolm. Do YOU ride these? Have you found the offsets (as far as I can make out mostly just being slightly heavier) small enough to now use these instead of traditional bindings personally?
Finally a binding which will replace decently my old Vans/Switch best ever Step In systems. Hopefully I will find them in Quebec, Canada. Of subject, what is the board in the video? Seems to be a extra wide...
It's the amplid dada, you can see it here: amplid.com/?sPartner=MalcolmM And yeah it's very wide, great for big feet! Very similar to the Ride Warpig. I'm moving onto the Nidecker Escape 162XW this winter though!
Hi Malcolm, great update thanks, I don't see any affiliate links on this, do you have one ? Looked at "fresh farm" and seems they're taking pre orders but looks like the 20/21 model. What year is the update video model ? B.
No affiliate links unless Blue Tomato are stocking them! I'm still on the pre production model, it has a slightly weaker spring in the release, but otherwise exactly the same as what's gonna be coming out!
Hi! Is it okay to put these bindings on softer boards (flex 4 or lower)? I ordered one for my stiffer board so my skiing friends won't need to wait for me 😄. But for simple convenience I would like them to have also on my softer board 🙂.
I think these bindings will be revolutionary. What worries me is that there are so many moving parts that wear and tear parts are inevitable. The question is will Nidecker provide these part for replacement or will we have to buy a whole new set of bindings?
Exactly as Sam said, I actually toured the European distribution centre the other day and they are stocked up with spare parts. North America will be the same 👍
Hi Malcolm Another great video. Thank you so much. I could not find on the web a reseller in France or in Europ to order for a pair of these beauties . Any help ? I live in Grenoble not far from l'AdH. Perhaps see you there for Eurocarving this season. Cheers.
I'm 22 a pretty good rider and i absolutetly WANT these. I often ride with skiers and i am tired of them having to wait for me. I wanna hop of the chair lift, simultaneously step into the binding and don't have to sit down or strap in my foot.
I've got a question you didn't cover. Is it totally annoying to have the binding open? It seems like it hangs all over the place and might drive me nuts!. Do you usually close them before getting on the lift? And fold over the highback? Seems like one extra step that takes a little shine off of the simplicity. Thoughts?
Fast approaching 50. These will do for stomping around the Portes du Soleil on my weekends. Cheers for being honest about the "great for old folks" line. ;-) haha
Hey Malcom! I've just done a week with these bindings and noticed that with my big feet the toe straps tended to slip/ride up onto the top of my boots, rather than pull backwards and down towards the heal. Is that something you noticed? It seems like the tow straps can't be angled down enough towards the toe edge of the board, again, i'm on the upper size limit for these bindings with the XL's not being available yet?
Yeah I got that a little bit too being at the upper end of the size limit as well, tweaking with the other strap length that you lock in, and the bit that connects the ankle and toe strap, seemed to fix it though. I have since tried the upcoming XLs and they're alot better at fitting around a larger boot.
Thanks a lot for the detailed original review, and this awesome follow-up! Could you please provide an indication for your board measurements? Waist width and width underfoot? Will really help me with some proportions since I intend to pre-order a set of these :)
Great review Malcolm! Do you tested Supermatic bindings with Burton Ion buts? I have Burton Ions, and I try to figure out how Nidecker Supermatic will work with them.
I love the idea, and really would like them….I’m going to be 50 when I am in France next spring, so maybe fit into the older demographic, but I ride a fairly stiff (but old) Atomic alibi renu with Union force bindings and love the responsiveness, so maybe not for me?
I haven't ridden the NX2 carbons, but they will be stiffer and more lightweight, but what you are getting with the supermatics is a different step in function
