I didn't realize this game was coming out so soon until a few days ago (I figured it'd be another year or something). I'll pick it up sometime after I eventually get a PS5. I loved Automata and was looking into the original before this version was announced.
@@frenchynoob I didn't own a console back then, also only briefly looked up the synposis to avoid spoiling myself in case I ever played it in the future, then of course the remaster came out so I avoided looking up anything about it at all
I did NOT expect to like this game. The combat is responsive, weighty, and has a great flow to it. The retro avant garde lore is super cool too. May go back and play Automata
You’ll probably enjoy Automata’s combat even better. It feels as smooth as Bayonetta or any other Platinum game, though it’s on the easier side in terms of challenge.
Original is my favourite game nobody played, so stoked it's finally getting some attention - did come out in 2010 though which was a stellar year for games all around, so flew massively under the radar!
automata has a way better combat system, being able to use 2 swords at one time to make combos, and also the last second dodge of an enemy attack slows down time and is my favorite feature honestly, feels soooo good
Weapon Weight doesn't just affect attack and movement speed. Heavier weapons break enemy guard and armor easier than lighter weapons. In Part 1, this doesn't matter so much because even lighter one handed swords can easily break an enemy's guard and they don't wear armor. But in Part 2, it can take many attacks, including multiple charge attacks to break an enemy's guard. This can be mitigated somewhat by leveling up as your stats are also weigh against guarding enemies and higher level characters may find they break guard break quite easily even with lighter weapons. It can also be mitigated somewhat with the "var" line of words words. For armor, you pretty much want to use magic anyway since that breaks off armor the easiest allowing you to deal much more damage. But the speed penalty for heavier weapons can also be mitigated by again leveling up. As you level up, heavier weapons take less and less of a toll on your movement and attack speed. This can be further mitigated with the "bes" line of words that you put on your martial arts (defend and evade). At some point the difference is negligable at worst and nonexistent at best. Heavier weapons break through enemy guard much easier, sometimes outright ignoring it. They can also knock enemies down easier, which can allow you to get a finisher much quicker. Ultimately, heavier weapons are typically better than lighter weapons, at least in part 2. Attack power is important, but if most of your hits are blocked and you are struggling to even get a hit in, then try using a heavier weapon (within the same weapon type or even just using a two handed sword entirely) or adding words to improve your weapon's guard break. You can also just use magic to knock them down and get a few hits or a finisher in.
Lol I'm 9 hrs into the game and I'm still at the beginning. Like I'm still a child and just doing side quest and stuff. I just love the atmosphere of the game and the music is just enjoyable.
You can cancel heavy air attacks with a jump or evade and chain them 3 times this way. You can also cancel the attack animation on downed enemies early with an evade to better chain them together. Just mentioning this because i never see anyone using this.
Thanks, I wanted to know what the combat changes were before I bought the game, but not a single streamer I could find decided to read the tutorials. I'm planning on ordering a copy later today.
And for those who don't know, you can perform an "execution" on enemies knocked out on the ground, for ps4 players you just tap the O, button, anyone else I can't really help ya, but try it out sometime, it really helps because as long as the enemy has been downed, no matter how much armor, how much health, they'll die as long as you don't cancel it which is perfect for when you're surrounded. I normally use this on armored enemies, and just single tap dark lance since it'll knock them down and go for the kill, it makes possibly long fights way shorter!
I wish some of the enemy attacks were as well telegraphed as in Automata or other Platinum’s hack n’ slash games. but Square Enix did a really good job with the combat overhaul for the original Nier game on their own, without Platinum’s help. If FF XVI’s combat is as good as this, we’re in for a great time. I find myself just running around that open field over and over just looking for targets to fight because it’s so much fun!
@@LS-cy2cr jump + heavy = uppercut attack mid-air + heavy = ground slam attack so yea, you need to press the heavy quickly after jumping to perform the first one
I was waiting for boomstick to make a video on this game. I enjoyed nier automata for the most part so this my first time with replicant.. It has such a familiar vibe to automata and im so glad they brought the combat system over
Tip 1: Dark Wall 2: Phoenix Spear, you can pretty much beat the game with these. bonus: switch to Gluttony or Lance sometimes for some conditional boss battles
Weapon weight also affects effectiveness with guard breaking (probably armor breaking too) i use iron will (extra heavy) and virtuous treaty (very light) and i noticed that iron will always break enemies guard with 1-2 hits, while virtuous treaty usually takes 3-4 hits
Thank you very much for your work on the channel and talking about gameplay depth and really thanks for covering some hidden depth in this game because I barley even see people talk about automata depth
I already considered myself quite decent at combat but i didn't know about the different spell varients or the quick weapon swap so might actually help a lot.
for everyone who is willing to use "broken" mechanics (idk if it's intended, but imo it doesn't look like) with a light sword, it's actually possible to just spam-hold the heavy attack button at an enemy, and he will not do anything. so lock-on, hold heavy-attack, until you jumped 2 times at the enemy, and it will be thrown away... if he was launched a quite distance, just do 1 dodge to him, and do all of it again. works perfectly on enemies like the guarded ones, as they are not even able to move... i personally don't use this that often, but people who just wanna smack enemies, go ahead and try it
Dont know if it had a name, but did they keep the "animation shield" from the original? When fighting an enemy that throws orbs, if you have a weapon with big, slow animations, you essentially had a wall of invulnerability in front of you when doing a combo. It also filled up your magic imediately, since breaking orbs restores MP.
Lots of love put into those transitions. Did you find the font the game uses or just wing it? Also, that jump+heavy launcher can gain more height than a jump if timed precisely, and in many cases skip pushing blocks.
Dodge whack. Shoot with blast then release and if anyone shoots back at you then spam gluttony and kill the shooters last so you keep getting that instant cannon ammo. Love this game. That's my strat. Dashing mid combo is great if you suck at parrying
I just wish they would have made switching magical abilities easier or found a way to equip more than two at any given time without being forced to give up your dodge or block. There's so much potential with the magic in this game but it's held back in a huge way by hiding away 6/8 of them behind three menus and five button presses.
mans treating nier like fuckin smash bros melee, im lovin it i wish the dodge mechanic was more like darksouls where you get s and dash through attacks the quick evade removes control and i constantly feel like you can't really be overly aggressive even tho you can pretty much just zerk rush everything with ooga booga bonk stick when you got the money to buff yourself. even taking damage is not that big of a deal, you can cheese the economy easily and be on max all potions constantly. fishing was the best combat tool addition, and i love me some white moonflowers :P
The best tactics is simply to wait for kainee and emil to cast their breaking guard spells then running from one to another enemy and finishing them when they lie on the ground.
If you’re talking about the pc port, Im pretty sure there’s a mod out there that fixes most if not all of the issues. Although you might wanna play this first since Replicant is a remaster/remake? of the first NieR game while Automata is it’s sequel.
@@MoronProfessional Oh that's interesting, thanks for that info. Didn't know that about the pre-quel! Yes PC, I used the far mod a bit but it's still not perfect. Still waiting for the steam update for it.
from the original Version of Nier, the player needs to stay still when using any magic attack so its either melee, or ranged magic, and you cannot do both. in this game tho, you can run and attack while using magic. (unleashing charged attacks will stop the player from running tho) but now I noticed, the game incentivizes the player to stay still when charging magic attacks now. that time slow mechanic is entirely new
If you love Automata then yes. The story is better but the gameplay is more dated than Automata since it is a remaster/remake of an 11 year old game, though the revamped combat is a huge improvement since it is more like Automata now.
It’s an 11 year old game with upgraded visual and combats. - Pros: Story is amazing. So is combat. Music is also great. - Cons: Some game design elements are outdated. Side quests are all just fetch quests. Run from A to B to buy some eggs and run back to A kind of quest. No fast travel so there’s a bunch of back tracking. Generally it’s worth it for me cause I care the most for the story and combat. If you want something more modern and polished like Automata, you might be a little disappointed.
@@Aliens1337 the side quest are really the only downside to this game so far but still not even that bad cause I enjoy fighting enemies on my way to and fro cause the combat is sooo good I’m still on act 1 and am loving it
Nice! Please talk about the Hard difficulty, I've found the enemies don't stagger as much, is the game speed actually faster in Hard? Or it is just the enemies?
i think i like replicant's combat more than autotomato. ill probably replay auto on hard and actually use the combat mechanics this time after i finish replicant
IS that what "Hold down the magic button durin a combo to add a charged magical attack to the chain." actually means? It's not HOLDING it, it's RELEASING it that's actually important?
I don’t think so. When you upgrade weapons, they always get lighter. Wouldn’t make sense to make your weapons weaker when you upgrade them if being heavier actually brings benefits.
@@Aliens1337 It depends on the weapon. The Lily-Leaf Sword for example gets heavier after each upgrade. Its starts out as a light weapon and ends up as a heavy weapon with 2 moderate steps inbetween.
And there are people complaining about the plain Combat system und that ist ist Boring after 2 hours Into the Game, in the next Moment i See Them Button mashing one single Button all the damn time without even maiking Use of the Magic enough.... I rather watch people who really wanna "Play" the Game
Once you get a tutorial notification. Pause game. Go down to grimoire Weiss. Then across to notes. Then down to tourists. Then pick and read which ones you want. Enjoy friend
oh my god so much the game doesnt tell you. just like automata you can finish the entire game without figuring out 50% of the combat mechanics because the tutorials are so barren.
I've yet to have a combat encounter difficult enough to justify knowing all the differences in attacks. You can literally button mash your way through it all. They need an ultra-hard mode. Way too easy, even on hard.
